Trades June/July/Deadline

PreviousPage 42 of 125Next

Don't break my heart with Ben Gamel (as the Big Bat +add) AJP

😆 🤣 😂 😹 😆 🤣

Three leg stool approach for Preller at the deadline … have to treat each leg so the end result is a balance stool.

1. Address adds of players to help win NOW

2. Deal with deleting players that don’t help win NOW

3. Make moves that have zero net impact on CBT

Somehow have to accomplish all via multiple moves … in some sequence that will not leave the Padres holding the bag if the last move does not play out.

On the “delete” leg (which should go first) … looking more and more toward the AL EAST … at some level TB-TOR-BOST-BALT are all still in the WC race and all have “issues”. Not going to give a ML quality piece in any deal (they need them) but they may be a bit more desperate to pick-up a Padres player to fill a hole as long as the Padres don’t ask for a big return … basically a salary dump for the Padres (second leg) to create CBT room for working on the third leg … “adds”.

BOST has to be ready to take action after falling out of a playoff slot going 3-7 in the last 10 games and getting mauled by the NYY. BOST fans are not forgiving. Add that Sale who just returned got a hand injury today … no idea how serious. The desperately need OF/1B help and SP. Would they take a $7MM gamble on Myers or a $1.5MM gamble on Voit? Then have to consider Snell. Then dream and think Hosmer (some salary bought down).

TOR in in the 3rd WC slot and it is touch and go. Clearly want to win NOW given the fired their manager while in a WC slot. They have money and no salary cap issue. SP may be their worst issue given injuries … Snell? Clevinger? Martinez?

TB is not a money spender so a deal would have to be a FA to be … and not sure there pressing need but if the Padres want to chip away on the CBT issue and with some RP depth (Castillo, Baez, et al near) … could consider clearing some of the FA to be / no minor league option types … e.g. Johnson or Garcia.

BALT is also a low spender team so maybe similar to TB strategy.

———-

One other … MINN is leading the AL Central by a whisker over CLEV and need SP … maybe another home for Snell.

———

If Preller can swing some of these “deletes” he would have a clearer path make aggressive offers on some his “add” targets … taking full contracts and adding less in prospects.

Boston's OF makes ours look like a HOF... Grisham upgrades all 3 positions..by a lot..Myers too.. Voit is > than their IB..and Hosmer would be the type that hits 40 doubles in that park...Voit would dent the Green Monster but would be thrown out at 2B 60% of the time trying to stretch singles off the Monster into doubles... lol...lots of synergy with our 2 clubs

Jay Groome P was one AJP was in on he is fat has lost velo and is nowhere near what he once was but he gets plenty of swing and miss and his results have been solid .. could always switch from SP to BP a la Martinez.... only a 45 spec now..perhaps someone we can snag in a deal with them also is near MLB ready..which even serviceable #4/5:type would be good insurance for 23..with a chance he gets serious and loses some lbs and taps a little more on what he once was

A fun trade would be Voit for C #22 spec Nathan Hickey A+... Basically a 22 yr old Voit who walks at the same rate he SOs ..very good plate approach..huge power .. No defense at C..more a DH type .. could be in SDP by sometime in 23 or 24

Hosmer to Bos makes some sense.

Hosmer to Bos makes some sense.

It would be Xander/Devers and JDMart.... a Big wide gap.... even wider....Hosmer #4 best offensive weapon and then just as big a gap to their 5th player....

I think i am missing a player or 2..but yeah Hosmer would definetly be an upgrade at 1B in Boton

TOR vs BOST … neck and neck for a playoff slot … both need SP … wonder if Preller can play one off the other and move Snell (and his full contract). Note Sale just broke his pinky finger on his throwing hand making BOST’s SP plight abysmal. Should motivate BOST and TOR for their own use and to block BOST.

Yeh, Hosmer to BOST does make sense but doubt they take the full contract. Maybe a Padre buy down of $5MM per year … basically reducing Hosmer to an $8MM player gets it done. If not Hosmer, Voit is the lower cost option and can be non-tendered if they don’t want him in the future.

Just look for some lottery pick prospects in A ball or lower which may be more acceptable to BOST and TOR.

Grisham is at league minimum so no CBT help to the Padres … maybe tossing him in helps the deal with BOST even though his performance is poor. Hard to tell what other teams’ scouts have followed but did see a media comment (outside of SD) saying Grisham is having hitting problems but still has elite defense. So, I guess someone would find him useful.

Sale should be out for 4-6 weeks, you would think that BOS would definitely have some interest in Snell. And if you could bundle Voit with him, that would save SD about $15.45M in CBT numbers. And then would allow SD to chase Bell and Benintendi.

While Soto would be the dream, I think Bell and Benintendi are realistic gets that wont break the bank in prospects.

Those two combined are $18.5M in CBT dollars, and the Snell/Voit move would save $15.45, so would still need to find a move to save the additional $3.5M±. Garcia is $3.5M, so maybe move him somewhere for the additional savings, or would need to add a good prospect for either WAS or KC to pay some of the salary to prevent SD from going over the CBT.

Of course, if you could get BOS to Hosmer or Myers since he can play 1B, instead of Voit, then we are set.

So best bet would be Snell and Myers to BOS for A level OFer Nick Decker. Include Grisham if needs be.

Voit/Hosmer/Bell can split DH and 1B, although no Voit at 1B and Benintendi can play LF, Ruiz to CF, and Mazara can play RF.
