Side … IF the Padres played … they would be best served if WASH held on to Soto until the winter and have the CBT space in hand with all the FA. The FA, some opt-outs, some non-tenders could easily fund Soto and a re-sign of Musgrove and stay under the CBT.
I guess on the counter point … as elite as Soto is … would his bat with Machado - Tatis in the long term be able to carry a team without prospect infusion or money to buy impact FA. Not out of the question that Padre if they also sign Musgrove could have $120-130MM tied up in 4 players leaving about $80MM for the remaining 22. Something to ponder in trying to build a sustained winning organization.

Would be fine... also as Kim expires Merrill/Acosta (others) will be ready..in the OF..Ornelas/Howell/Rooker offer some depth at AA/AAA.. and in 2 yrs Here comes "The Freak" James Wood and there are a lot of Bats in LE and FtWayne that look very interesting...not to mention the wave of IF/OF at AZ/DSL
Another reason why BERRY at #15 makes a lot of sense ..he could make his mlb debut in 2024...
So the remaining $$ could mostly go to P
Also keep in mind 5-6 arms BP of not more are on minimum deals or haven't been promoted to the MLB yet.. Morejon/Baez/Castillo/Wilson/Cosgrove etc etc.. are all a plane ticket away and as good as most in our BP
So I can see it working
Circa 2025
SP Musgrove/SUSANA/(GORE/WETHERS)/Manea/(FA/FA/2022 draftee/other/Lawson/Knher) could work just fine..especially if Susana becomes what we all think he will be

Susana/Wood/Victor Acosta and Merrill (although u can talk me into Merrill or Acosta just not both) are my 100% near untouchables..and WOOD is the ultimate NO GO for me

Which is probably why WASH would demand him … his upside is epic as a huge athletic player who can hit, hit with power, has speed, and can play defense. In 3-4 years he could be considered in the Judge / Soto / Tatis range of conversation. The again he might not.

- By the way Wilson Contreras is in a 3 for 36 slump...BA down to the low .250s
- As I type he just hit a monster drive at 111mph to left center... but the wind is blowing in hard today at Wrigley..didn't even get to the warning track..

But Hassell III sales point is that he could conceivably be in Washington in 2023..along with CJ..Campusano Rosario (Wethers or Gore).. if u trade Soto you need to give the Fans something to Dream On (come and see play)... we send Susana + Wood + Acosta .. 3 people will show up to watch Nat games in 2023... and by the time they are up (if ever) no one would be a Nats fan... their roster 26 is going to take a complete beat down this offseason they need almost ready players more than anything...

I can’t see AJ,even in a deal for Soto,trading Abrams,Hassell “and” Wood….would probably add more quantity instead.
Of course,I could be wrong.AJ may believe he needs to go deep into the playoffs this year to keep his job.

Yep, don’t think Preller is in trouble with Siedler … and that is all that counts.
Yeh, tend to agree that moving Abrams, Hassell, and Wood is not likely … but subbing in filler such as Weathers, et al might not appeal to WASH IF offers from other teams are more compelling.
Hard to guage other teams’ evaluation of the trade pieces but if Wood was out … would WASH want Gore … for all we know Campusano may not be highly though of by WASH. However, if the Padres trade Gore … 2023 SP could be Darvish and Snell (both FA after that season) and wishful thinking after that. A recipe for sub-500 seasons.
Although Soto is great … not all that sure that he is the piece that takes SD over the top considering the cost in talent and the problem of surrounding him with legit ML talent to fill a 26 man roster.

No .. Hassell + CJ... NO WOOD... he can add (one of Susana /Acosta)... (2 or 3 of Baez/Morejon/Wethers/Knehr...or (*1 Gore) + Rosario and a couple lesser specs... AND Myers who basically washes 2022 CBT allowing Pads to not go over...
As long as AJP doesn't get too cute and tries to unload Hosmer on them..unless they expand Josh Bell (2 month rental) added and we add another spec (Mears or 2)
