Trades June/July/Deadline
Quote from Henry Silvestre on July 15, 2022, 8:36 amI'd male a trade or 2 today if I am AJP...sort of a message trade...
Tyler Naquin CF/OF (Reds) to SDP for Lamet (to match Naquins $$ for CBT purposes) + Hollis (AA).. Hollis can replace Drury if he were traded and get a shot at mlb as an aging out soon chance of a lifetime guy... Lamet (bounce back in Cincy) a good gamble for Reds..
Trade #2
On Sunday.. Zach Davies SP (Az) to Padres.. Azocar + C Sullivan (AAA) to AZ... with Gore over IP (vs 2020-21).. insurance depth to SP with an eye on making a big SP move (Manea/Clev or likelier Snell) closer to the deadline...
Minor moves sure.. but needed for other moves soon... Davies is a gamer and pitched really really good in SD for us...(before being traded for Yu)
Naquin allows us to keep Ruiz in SD..while optioning or trading Grisham.. at worst Ruiz + Naquin > Grisham + Azocar.. with much more upside/speed (Ruiz) in our side
Once a couple minor deals like these are made..then we can start working on the bigger fish (BATS ..perhaps even CastilloSP) to go from 0 to 60 literally and figuratively speaking (as the deadline is roughly at the 60 games left mark)
The Draft (Sunday-Tuesday) + a couple moves should fire up the Fan base and a series sweep /win .. could make it a trifecta weekend of exciting times for the base

I could live with those two moves ... maybe more a boost for the team than just the fans. If I could I would substitute Grisham for Hollis. Hollis is not a big prospect with upside but Grisham ... hitting in CINN ... could give a legit player for the next 3 years (might not but Hollis may not). Plus the deletion of Grisham might signal to the team that performance counts.

Yeah I like the Ship Grish out move.. sort of forces Ruiz into the CF role which I love.. this kid had his 1st single..Double and triple as well as RBI and SB all in his 1st series.. (only missing 1st HR).. thats kind of "special" all in itself... he did have 2 swings on balls out of the strike zone.. but at least he looked the part at the plate... start him everyday and bat him 8th or 9th... as the lineup lengthens with a +1 or +2 Bats ..and then Tatis... having a talented exuberant player like Ruiz at 8th or 9th ..even when he struggles (which is a given at some point)..he is easy to carry... obviously our current lineup has too many struggles and not enough consistency and our bench is Minor league like... again a quick fix when AJP decides to get started and as soon as Wil and Jurickson come back... Wil >Voit... Wil/Mazara > Azocar/Mazara... Ruiz>Grish.. Profar/Ruiz/Wil> Profar by himself... pretty easy to see a HUGE increase in production from our DH/OF in our last 71 games ..vs the 1st 91...and that's without an add... need our D to play consistent baseball and out SP to remain constent.. our BP (reinforcements incoming and maybe an add) just needs next man up to be Wilson/Morejon and not Scott/Knerr...at full strength Hill/Stamen wouldn't even be in SD (AAA)nor next man up in AAA...
Rogers/Pomz/Johnson/Garcia/Suarez/NMart/Cristmatt... would be our #1-7 (assuming Adams is a wild card to come back before Sept)... at AAA Morejon/Wilson/Hill/Castillo/Baez/Knehr/Knerr/Scott... noticed our 15th best BP arm if not lower ranked (Scott) has been pitching in SD .. thats hard to get by with... Stanmen (I think he goes IL 60 and into the sunset)

I think you all are giving up on Grisham too early. Yes, he is going through a bad patch right now, but he still has some pop in his bat and is tied for 3rd on the Padres for HRs and 6th for RBIs. Yes, that is also an indictment of the rest of the teams performance!
Even as a 4th OFer under control for 3 more years, he still offers some value to SD. He is due for his 1st arb next season, with his numbers, he wont be expensive.
And with Myers and Mazara being FA at the end of the season, and Profar able to opt out, we could use the depth next season.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on July 15, 2022, 10:18 amJust did a deep dive into our BP..and Rogers in particular... if u look at his overall career and his AS season last yr.. his #'s aren't so far off... from who he is *career norm... he is a Closer who needs 2 or 3 run lead to be safe Save situation.. he is not in my opinion a game 7 2-1 lead bottom of the 9th .. save the day facing Judge and Co...
So I think we need a guy like Barlow( Bednar would cost too much) (KC)..he has a much better track record and #'s.. doesn't have to be "The Closer" as much as just one of the Closers...with our BP soon to be deep and our SP all but certain to avg 6 IP I would acquire Barlow (also controlled for 23 and at very low $$ which even adds more value to us)....
I would then split duties every other day to keep BP fresh
Day 1. Day 2
CL Rogers. CL Barlow
8th Johnson. 8th Pomz
7th Garcia. 7th Suarez
Leaving Cristmatt and Nick Mart for any other situations/extras/long relief/etc...
If needed reinforcements at AAA Wilson/Morejon/Baez/Hill/Gore? (Unless he keeps on SP)/..the rest...
Adams could be Barlow like as well..just not sure he will be back in time to help..but maybe in the postseason...

Quote from Henry Silvestre on July 15, 2022, 11:48 amI am going to post a Dream/Nightmare risky all in type of 3 way Trade
Padres to Toronto Blake Snell
Padres to Nationals Eric Hosmer, Tim Hill, CJ Abrams , Rickey Tidemann (Jays), Robert Hassell III, Grishman, Tirso Ornelas and Ryan Wethers
To Padres Stephen Strasburg, Juan Soto, C Luis Meza (Jays # 20), Josh Bell, BP Finnegan, +$50 mil ($25 for payroll 22/$25 for payroll 23)
Money out /money in for 22 = net $0
What this means to SDP... we get one of the young Super stars in the game to team up with Tatis and Manny (for at least 2 1/2 yrs), Bell for the post season push and a BP arm that is reliable + a local SP hero who has pitched 8 1/2 games in 3 seasons ..its hurt and its owed $223mil... (we pass on roughly $70 mil off $$ (to Toronto and Nats combined) and get another $50 from Nats .. so in essence we inherit $103 (plus the cost to arb 3 and arb 4 Soto .. $50 mil).. so +$153 mil in future payroll (Stras deal its thru 2026 and deferred til 2029) not sure what of any contributions we are going to get from Strats but that's the price we pay for Soto...
Soto vs Hos + Snell $$ for 2023 would roughly clear+ $ 6 mil (the $25mil from Nats basically take care of Strats 23..)so after the trade we would still have a net of +$6mil for 23
Why Nats do the deal.. they save a ton of future $$ obligations...get a TOR type potential starter in Tidemann and a still very young Wethers who could be a very solid MLB SP.. A star SS in the making..a future AS type OF prospect .. plus a couple of MLB veterans that cover some spots for them now...
From 24 to 29.. this move handicaps us $24mil per yr (AAV CBT $$$ 35mil/$24mil) in yearly CBT$$... meaning without going over stage 1 of CBT we would be around $206mil payroll to max.. I believe lux tax thresholds move up a bit as well so we would gain that as well
Lineup after the trade
1. Tatis Jr SS
2. Juan Soto LF
3. Manny 3B
4. Bell 1B
5. Mazara RF
6 Alfaro C
7. CRONE ZONE 2B
8. Myers DH
9. Ruiz CF
Bench - Kim ( vs lhp starts)/ Profar/Nola/VOIT
* only 3 players (4 including bench) FA after season Bell (would become a priority signing or not if Crone slides over to 1B) Myers, Mazara and Profar
Team would still have $70 mil or so (after factoring in savings $$ from Nats and Soto arb $$)... to sign Musgrove .. resign Bell? .. and fill out roster
Cheap $$ players.. that are still on team or at AAA for 23 (assuming no other trades)
Rosario SS/2B/3B
Batten (everywhere)
Ruiz CF/OF
Campusano C/DH
Mazara OF (cheapish resign)
SP (after Mus resign)
1- Musgrove
2- YU
3- Gore
4. STRASBURG ((injury concern may or may not pitch in 23 or ever..BUT if he does and does at a level similar to his career avgs..a big ++. The risk (Soto) return for us taking the big $$ hit .. comes with a little reward if Stras pitches again
5. TBD TBD TBD
BP can be constructed a lot cheaper and perhaps healthier and deeper than 22's version
For 23 there would be $$ for another 2 arms and depth/bench upgrades... Profar/Suarez and Martinez options could free up another $19 mil..(so before resignings $89 mil) that's some teams entire payroll.. to fill in SP.. BP and bench
