With the level of defense that Grisham is providing right now, would there be a drop off from Grisham to Profar in CF.

So if we were to trade for Benintendi, just keep him in LF, slide Profar to CF, and platoon Mazara/Myers (Myzara from this point going forward).

Plus Myers can also remove Voit from DH, and spell Hosmer at 1B as well. Plus if he is doing well, then you could also keep Ruiz up as well. And with Profar as a SH, you would have with the ability to go all RHH or all LHH in the OF based on what pitcher you face.

Profar has 21 Games at CF

Benintendi 71... if anything Beni at CF Profar in LF... BUT my ultimate scenario is Ruiz keeps hitting and claims CF .. starting tomorrow if Profar starts in LF (IL stint over)

Benintendi has 690 games in LF compared to 190 for Profar. Keep Benintendi where he is comfortable. Until this season, Profar has pretty much bounced around the positions. He is more accustom to this than Benintendi.

If we were to get Benintendi, Ruiz probably goes back down to keep refining his game and play everyday. And SD goes with an OF mix of Benintendi, Profar, Myzara. Using 4 players in the OF, and allowing Myers to see more time as the DH to keep off his knee. Maybe Grish or Azocar stay up as emergency injury help. And in case of injury, Ruiz comes back up.

Would adding Cronenworth to any deal improve our return?

With Kim( solid fielder, lack of range...think Kevin Kouzmanoff) and Abrams on board, loads of options to play 2B.

Not for a rental.. but yeah Crone has a ton of value he is 1of the top 3 2B in baseball.. not sure moving him improves our team no matter who comes back ..

The only way I would think about trading Crone, would be if Crone was part of the package for Juan Soto from WAS.

You read my mind

Would you trade Tatis Jr for Soto and Bell if you had a good idea that Soto would sign long term?

No no and Hell no.

Tatis is not tradeable.

We haven't seen him for awhile so we forget he is literally a top 3 player in baseball "and" locked up as a Padre for 13 more years.

You just "can not" trade him.

If he goes on to have a Ken Griffey type career at SS and you traded him at 23 years old?

This kid has missed huge chunks of his 3 years and 2020 was only 60 games and he's still averaged almost 5 WAR per season.

there is no player in baseball I would trade him for.....his contract will seem a bargain in 3-4 years.

Yes his injury history is concerning but they have almost all been flukey things that will likely never happen again.I think he's learned his lesson about being careful and remaining available going forward.Even a guy like Julio Rodriguez can only hope to become as good as Nando and maybe he still won't.Soto would be the only consideration but he is going to get even more $ than Tatis and can not play SS and is not a force on the bases....and we won't even mention marketability/merchandise sales.Well I just did so I'll guess Tatis is at least 5 times more marketable than Soto is or ever will be.

I can't see AJ/Seidler trading Tatis for anything anyone would actually offer.

Looked at LF - CF for both in the 2019-22 timeframe.

Start with the basics … neither have logged much time in CF other than passing it on the way to LF. (Note: same goes for RF). So either in CF is a gamble and the defense stats from such a limited time are “inconclusive”.

Profar is grading out defensively superior in LF although Benintendi does seem to have the better range factor … weaker arm. I guess if I had to put one in CF … more comfortable with Profar given his history of adapting to other positions. Benintendi has been a LF only for a long time and adjusting to CF may not be easy.

However, adding a bat is a good thing. Benintendi in LF/DH frees up Profar to DH, 1B, 2B (if needed), and CF. Profar’s versatility freed up would allow different calls on the rest of the roster.

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/07/alderson-mets-seeking-another-bat-bullpen-help.html

After reading that I wonder if there's a chance a 3 team deal with the Mets and Cubs might work. The Mets take Hosmer and Nola from us with Robertson coming over from the Cubs. We take McCann from the Mets and get Contreras from the Cubs while sending Campusano to them.

The Mets use their financial might to pickup a reliever, get a healthy catcher and maybe improve their DH situation. We upgrade at C while shedding a decent amount of salary. The Cubs get their C of the future. Some periphery pieces might have to be added, but I think it could work as the framework of a deal.

I dont understand why NYM would want either Hosmer or Nola?

And why would NYM part with McCann when they are looking to add a bat?

And what we would do with McCann, Contreras, and Alfaro at the same time.

McCann has been terrible for them. He's also hurt. As frustrated as we might be with Nola he's an upgrade for them. Smith and Davis have also been terrible for them as their primary DH options. They showed a willingness to discuss taking on Hosmer before the season. Maybe they think he bounces back with a change of scenery and helps their DH situation. The reports in the link I posted says they're looking to upgrade at DH and in the bullpen and would prefer to do so using their financial might rather than by trading prospects. This gets them a late inning reliever, a healthy upgrade at C and potentially an upgrade at DH using only their financial might. It might not be ideal, but if they're reluctant to trade prospects it might be a reasonable option for them.

For the Padres McCann is included purely to offset some of Hosmer's money. He's on the 10 day, but they've already said he'll be out longer than the minimum. Oblique injuries can be tricky. If he gets healthy and back closer to his career line he might play against lefties, but I wouldn't be counting on anything from him this year.

Adding McCann (who is vastly over paid / rated) adds some roadblocks going forward … his contract for 2023-4 is at $12.150MM vs. Homser’s $13MM … so not much cash savings in those years. He effectively either blocks Campusano or pushes out Alfaro for a  catcher with limited hitting skills. Meanwhile need to replace Hosmer’s bat with increased spending (although the CBT amount is lower).

Not sure I want to have $10MM AAV or $12MM salary locked up in McCann if I have Campusano as an alternative (or have sights on signing Contreras in the winter).

—————-

IF Mets don’t want to deal prospects and will take salary … not sure the sellers have the players that work for the Mets.

So, I will up my bid … Nola, Voit, Garcia, and add in Lamet for a NY pizza with extra pepperoni and extra peppers.

Looks like 1 spot in our 40 man is going to be opened with Efrain Contreras elbow issue...even before the injury I thought he would be a cut... hope he recovers and doesn't need TJ 2

Campusano is gone to the Cubs to get Contreras in the trade I proposed. He can't be blocked if he's not in the organization. Swapping Hosmer's contract for McCann would allow us to add Contreras while slightly lowering our total payroll and luxury tax payroll. It would also save almost 8m in AAV calculations and we would be done with it a year earlier. I'm not worried about replacing Hosmer's bat.

Couldn’t the Padres just sign Contreras next year (let’s say $18MM) and still stay under the CBT threshold given the pending FA departing?

Locking up $18MM for Contreras and $10MM for McCann in CBT space seems overpay for the catcher slot when could go with Campusano over McCann and redeploy that $10MM to the pitching / OF. Then do what they can to get some trade value out of Alfaro and Nola.

Still think they can get Contreras in 2022 as a rental for a lot less than Campusano.

Just a technical question … since Contreras is in the minor leagues would he not have to be added to the 26 man roster and immediately moved to the 60 day IL … starting ML minimum pay and his ML service time clock.  Think the 60 day is solely a ML player IL.

I guess possible but not straight forward.
