Trades June/July/Deadline
Quote from fenn68 on July 14, 2022, 11:30 amIf all the AL is out on Benintendi … not sure any of the NL contenders are looking at him to be a priority upgrade (if at all) … all of KC’s leverage is gone if the Padres want to play.
Agree that I would not worry about a SD-TOR World Series (very very long odds) but Benintendi may be a big aid to get SD into and maybe deep into the playoffs.
Sort of the same logic I used with Contreras … and maybe even a cheaper cost to the Padres given the situation. Again getting KC to eat the remaining salary for a decent prospect still saves them the COMP PICK cost and gets them better odds on a succeful prospect.

At some point the law to enter CANADA should change … but not looking soon … this has to hurt Benintendi’s FA prospects this winter … at least in the AL East.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on July 14, 2022, 11:32 amQuote from fenn68 on July 14, 2022, 11:20 amMLBTradeRumors is reporting … after the restricted players on KC … that NYY are pulling away for Benintendi as a trade target (clearly TOR his pulled out … they were on the fringe as a buyer) … some goes for Taylor.
So who else was really in on Benintendi as a deadline move? Maybe all the AL contenders will shy away. Are the Padres really interested … and has the changed? All this could have lowered the cost to acquire him … can’’t make the Royal’s front office all that happy.
He is the 2nd best hitter vs RHP in baseball.. RHP has been a thorn in our side.. Beni can play LF /DH or play CF in a smaller park like St Louis... adding him 100% improves out team.. just means a lot less ABs for Profar (ok with this as well) and Myers... as RF/LF and DH would be options for those 3 ... Alfaro is our 2nd best hitter vs RHP #99 (Machado #8) with at least 160 PA.. (Mazara and Tatis would be way up as well if qualified).. so Wil's and Profar's ABs would be highly impacted ..Voit would basically be DFA/Traded or be a highly Paid PH...
Bottom line Beni upgrades our team .. But not to the extend Contreras or Bell would from the power/position perspective... Getting Both (Beni and Contreras ) well yah sign me up

Quote from Henry Silvestre on July 14, 2022, 11:43 amBottom 5 position players in 26
Grishman/Voit/Azocar/Batten/Nola
Wil in - Azocar out (AAA) 40 Y
Profar in - Batten out (AAA) 40 Y
Tatis in - ?? Out 40 N
Beaty in - ?? Out 40 N
FA Bat in - ?? Out 40 N
So who goes / who stays do we send Ruiz or CJ to AAA or Grishman and Beaty (trade)..what if we add TWO Bats... lots of moving parts for sure

Quote from fenn68 on July 14, 2022, 11:47 amQuote from Jeremy Hill on July 14, 2022, 9:03 amI'm pretty sure Grandal, Perez and McCann are all over 10m. I'm starting to believe in Mazara as at least a good platoon player. With that in mind I think Contreras just might be the guy to move on. 1B/DH, CF and C look like the lineup positions most in need of an upgrade. There's not much on the CF market and the 1B/DH situation is complicated. That leaves C. Contreras would be a big upgrade and could help out the DH situation as well. Most other contenders also seem to be set at C or reluctant to make an in season change. He might come cheaper than expected.
Yikes … don’t know what I was thinking …needed that second cup of coffee.
Perez and Grandal are about $18MM AAV … McCann is just over $10MM AAV.
So Contreras should fall in the $15MM-$18MM range … 4 years seems the norm for these guys at this age.

Quote from BoosterSD on July 14, 2022, 11:55 amWith the level of defense that Grisham is providing right now, would there be a drop off from Grisham to Profar in CF.
So if we were to trade for Benintendi, just keep him in LF, slide Profar to CF, and platoon Mazara/Myers (Myzara from this point going forward).
Plus Myers can also remove Voit from DH, and spell Hosmer at 1B as well. Plus if he is doing well, then you could also keep Ruiz up as well. And with Profar as a SH, you would have with the ability to go all RHH or all LHH in the OF based on what pitcher you face.

Profar has 21 Games at CF
Benintendi 71... if anything Beni at CF Profar in LF... BUT my ultimate scenario is Ruiz keeps hitting and claims CF .. starting tomorrow if Profar starts in LF (IL stint over)

After reading that I wonder if there's a chance a 3 team deal with the Mets and Cubs might work. The Mets take Hosmer and Nola from us with Robertson coming over from the Cubs. We take McCann from the Mets and get Contreras from the Cubs while sending Campusano to them.
The Mets use their financial might to pickup a reliever, get a healthy catcher and maybe improve their DH situation. We upgrade at C while shedding a decent amount of salary. The Cubs get their C of the future. Some periphery pieces might have to be added, but I think it could work as the framework of a deal.

Quote from fenn68 on July 14, 2022, 12:20 pmSounds as though Profar back just before the break and Myers just after … so
1. Profar … Azocar down
2. Myers … Batten down
3. Beaty (60 IL) … can be optioned … Stammen to 60 IL
Then it gets tricky with no obvious move to 60 day IL and both Tatis and Johnson potentially coming off by the end of the month (Pomeranz maybe early Aug). Forces some trade / DFA deletes even before dealing with the issue of adds.
4. Tatis … probably depends on how Ruiz and Abrams perform prior to Tatis’ return and either one could be optioned and maybe DFA Sullivan or Rooker from the 40. OR, depending on how Grisham and Voit perform (and if Preller can find takers) they could be dealt (or DFA). A real domino effect … if Myers is an effective DH and the OF is secure with Profar - Mazara - Ruiz - Grisham, Voit is at risk. If Grisham continues to struggle … he could be optioned with the DFA from the minors.
5. Deadline add of a bat … Preller may try really hard to move a 40 man player as the offset in a deal and maybe a 26 man player. A lot of if/then mixing at this point that is impacted by CBT, options, player positions. The adding of a Contreras may have a different offset than the add of Benetendi. Could see Preller push to have Nola and Grisham moved in those deals (assuming Voit is already gone) or in a companion deal with another team.

I dont understand why NYM would want either Hosmer or Nola?
And why would NYM part with McCann when they are looking to add a bat?
And what we would do with McCann, Contreras, and Alfaro at the same time.

Not feeling this one.
Not sure the upside to the METS adding Nola (McCann will be back probably in late August) and taking on Hosmer’s contract. Robertson (FA after the season) is nice but not compelling add to a team that looks a lock for the playoffs. Probably could get that bat on a rental basis for less long term cost. Bell? Of course I would send them Voit and Garcia for good NY pizza and throw in Nola for some extra pepperoni.
Cubs would be happy in a Contreras for Campusano deal.
Need to find another route to get Contreras. Personally would prefer to run with Campusano for the future than McCann for the next two years … had two good seasons with CWS that got him an inflated deal but maybe a good defensive option but bat is questionable and already 32?
———-
I will keep going back to my theme that trying to include Hosmer (and his contract) in any deal … kills the deal.
