Trades June/July/Deadline
Quote from Henry Silvestre on July 14, 2022, 9:36 amQuote from fenn68 on July 14, 2022, 5:03 amNot directly linked to deadline moves but on Contreras … IF the Padres were to add only one bat in 2023 should that be Contreras? At what price?
I don’t see a signing advantage by trading for him in 2022 although the offense out of C/DH might be be best improved with him added. I will pass on how to handle the 2022 salary remaining.
In 2023 Padres will have Alfaro, Nola, Campusano due back but all have their weaknesses while Contreras in an All-Star … but he is already 30 and catchers don’t always age well after 30 (gamble on contract length).
IF he would sign with SD, price? Only one catcher in MLB earns over $10MM … Realmuto at $24MM (but he was younger when he got the deal … and probably not earning that money). Add that most catchers are not playing every day … more in the 60-70% range for #1. $60MM/4 years? Pair with Campusano (becomes a C cost offset vs Alfaro / Nola).
Sort of a one off from adding Contreras now … but maybe some of the logic overlaps.
I had it at 5-75... (might take,5-90) and the reason is the DH will prolong C careers and keep the good hit guys in the lineup 80% of the time... with this likely being his last big $$ contract the 5th yr will likely be the deciding factor..having a lot of Latin players and being in SD for a couple months would be a deciding factor vs the other 2 pursuing teams NYM and SF giants..both of whom lack the Latin player angle... if we indeed have to give up Hassell to get Contreras .. we minus well keep Contreras long term ..

Quote from WindsorUK on July 14, 2022, 9:40 amWould adding Cronenworth to any deal improve our return?
With Kim( solid fielder, lack of range...think Kevin Kouzmanoff) and Abrams on board, loads of options to play 2B.

Trading Crone over Kim is not a good idea. Crone is more productive, a LHH bat, and cheaper than Kim, and plays more positions.
Trading Kim is the better option. Would save SD $7M a year towards the CBT.

Not for a rental.. but yeah Crone has a ton of value he is 1of the top 3 2B in baseball.. not sure moving him improves our team no matter who comes back ..

The only way I would think about trading Crone, would be if Crone was part of the package for Juan Soto from WAS.

You read my mind
Would you trade Tatis Jr for Soto and Bell if you had a good idea that Soto would sign long term?

Quote from fenn68 on July 14, 2022, 11:05 amI would not over estimate what it would take in prospects to land Contreras … as a rental with at best only a couple of competing bidders (and that is key). What is two more months of Contreras worth to the Cubs … a COMP PICK next year at the cost for $3MM remaining salary … plus the COMP PICK will cost $2MM+/- to sign … so $5MM total to the CUBS. The few potential buyers know that and frankly don’t care what he is “worth” as a full season player … what is he worth to them and pay the least. METS are “interested” but they seem a lock for the playoffs even with the current roster … what is the incremental benefit for the cost? Padres have a greater need … and who else is a buyer with a big priority need and willing to push the price higher? Zero rumors on that front.
So, if the Cubs accepted the minor league equivalent of a COMP PICK (and they all don’t succeed) they save $5MM and get most likely end up with a prospect with greater chance of success if already proven in the upper minors … take two and increase the odds. Give them a little better prospect package and they would eat the $3MM (sunk cost to them) and still save the cost of signing a COMP PICK.
I would dangle Rosario (currently a Padres’ Top 5) who sits behind a slew of Padre SS options and maybe second lesser prospect. If I really believed in Campusano as the future … might toss in Nola (long control / league minimum) to cover the Cubs until their top C prospect is ready.
No need for the Padres to bid against themselves … read the market … bid real low … put the burden on the CUBS to do what is best for them (and that is not likely keeping Contreras.

Quote from fenn68 on July 14, 2022, 11:07 amAgree that Kirk is virtually untouchable as an All-Star C … low cost … long control … key to a playoff contending TOR.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on July 14, 2022, 11:10 amWith all the AL East teams basically saying NO to Beni now... does that open a door for SDP to get him cheaper...? I would imagine most AL contenders if not all would be OUT on him now as well ..because of the high possibility of a Toronto match-up in the postseason...
SDP would be taking a 1 in 6 risk that if they were to make the WS the BLUE JAYS wouldn't be the opponent.. I like the massive odds VS us to #1 make the WS and #2 play the Jays...

Quote from fenn68 on July 14, 2022, 11:20 amMLBTradeRumors is reporting … after the restricted players on KC … that NYY are pulling away for Benintendi as a trade target (clearly TOR his pulled out … they were on the fringe as a buyer) … some goes for Taylor.
So who else was really in on Benintendi as a deadline move? Maybe all the AL contenders will shy away. Are the Padres really interested … and has the changed? All this could have lowered the cost to acquire him … can’’t make the Royal’s front office all that happy.
