Trades June/July/Deadline
Quote from Henry Silvestre on July 13, 2022, 4:45 pmLooking at Voits career vs 2022... his work vs LHP in 22 has been atrocious..yet for his career over .800 OPS..sort of a reverse Hosmer 2022 version.. But a lot worse....
Being that Voit is controlled and relatively cheap for someone that should be hitting 30 bombs wonder if he becomes appealing to Buyers AND Sellers alike if he was to move on a separate deal from the Padres acquisition..

I would guess Preller is working every angle to move Voit’s $5.5MM for CBT space. So, if he does not get moved that tells a lot about what other teams think of him at $5.5MM.

Quote from fenn68 on July 13, 2022, 5:12 pmAnother spin on the KC situation … some speculation that other playoff contenders are really upset with the KC players … going to TOR without 10 of the 26 man roster replace by minor leaguers could (should) give TOR some extra wins and in a very close playoff race … one game can make all the difference.
Comments from PHIL catcher Realmuto who is not vaccinated and said CANADA will not dictate what he puts in his body.

As a Padre fan u won't be complaining in the 2nd half when we face a Bell (less) Nats..or a Beni less KC...thats like 20% of our 2nd half games

Quote from fenn68 on July 14, 2022, 5:03 amNot directly linked to deadline moves but on Contreras … IF the Padres were to add only one bat in 2023 should that be Contreras? At what price?
I don’t see a signing advantage by trading for him in 2022 although the offense out of C/DH might be be best improved with him added. I will pass on how to handle the 2022 salary remaining.
In 2023 Padres will have Alfaro, Nola, Campusano due back but all have their weaknesses while Contreras in an All-Star … but he is already 30 and catchers don’t always age well after 30 (gamble on contract length).
IF he would sign with SD, price? Only one catcher in MLB earns over $10MM … Realmuto at $24MM (but he was younger when he got the deal … and probably not earning that money). Add that most catchers are not playing every day … more in the 60-70% range for #1. $60MM/4 years? Pair with Campusano (becomes a C cost offset vs Alfaro / Nola).
Sort of a one off from adding Contreras now … but maybe some of the logic overlaps.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on July 14, 2022, 9:01 amI found a trade too good to be true.. BUT Jays have an excess of Good/Great Catchers.. and we have the same problem at SS/2B
So:
Toronto sends C Alejandro Kirk (All Star 23yr old) + Lhp Spec Rickey Tiedemann (2024 eta)
Padres send CJ Abrams + Hassell + Snell + Knehr + Grisham
Seems like Jays are in win now mode and need all the P they can get..Offense is not a problem for them so getting the young CJ /the defense Grish and a potential AS OF in the Benintendi mold in a yr or 2... Seems like a no brainer..Brainerd... we do give up a lot BUT Kirk is a middle of the lineup (4/5 type bat..that helps us now and for the next 1/2 Decade at least.. better than....steep price to pay... But if Contreras is going to cost Hassell or Campusano.. why not step way way up and get KIRK...
Jays have #1 Moreno and Jansen at C both would start for 25 if not more of the 30 teams so why not

Quote from Jeremy Hill on July 14, 2022, 9:03 amI'm pretty sure Grandal, Perez and McCann are all over 10m. I'm starting to believe in Mazara as at least a good platoon player. With that in mind I think Contreras just might be the guy to move on. 1B/DH, CF and C look like the lineup positions most in need of an upgrade. There's not much on the CF market and the 1B/DH situation is complicated. That leaves C. Contreras would be a big upgrade and could help out the DH situation as well. Most other contenders also seem to be set at C or reluctant to make an in season change. He might come cheaper than expected.

Yes C/1B/DH Contreras is the "perfect fit".. Nola defense (throwing out base runners can't possibly play in the postseason)...with Contreras ..we keep Nola as 3rd C.. and slowly allow Contreras to work on C Musgrove and Yu... so is not all or nothing... as they get familiar with each other.. paramount for Post season as we can't afford Nola turning every BB and Single into doubles...
Contreras can DH Huge upgrade over Voit
Contreras can C Huge upgrade over Nola
Contreras can play 1B also an upgrade on Hos days off...
In essence he upgrades 3 positions... by a good margin

Quote from Henry Silvestre on July 14, 2022, 9:26 amWhat is the price for Contreras (assuming we would need Cubs to eat the remaining $3or so mil..unless they want Lamet in the deal as well)?...
Does Campusano get it done? Or do we have to go Hassell?
Knowing the Cubs they would want SS Acosta or P Susana.... 2 I would rather keep. But also 2 1/2:a decade away from contributing...
