Trades June/July/Deadline
Quote from JasonE135 on July 8, 2022, 7:00 pmI don't see the Padres trading their 3rd best bat by OPS+ (2nd now with Profar out), a guy who is low cost and who the Red Sox would have zero interest in since they already have JD Martinez.
You might not like Voit but he has very little trade value as a DH/1B and at the same time is one of the best bats in the Padre's lineup. The Padres will not be trading him.

Agree that by himself Voit would not have a trade market. That is why connecting him with a SP that a team actually wants / needs can get him moved. Don’t know how long Profar is out but Tatis and Myers are returning an can cover the loss of Voit.
Voit is not low cost ($5MM) for DH. The objective for the Padres is to clear about $10MM in CBT salaries IF they want to add more productive bats such as Bell / Contreras / Benintendi.
Clearing $10MM is not easy given the realistic options the Padres have … that another team would want.
As for Boston if you compare Voit at 1B (bad defense and all) may be an improvement over Cordero and Dalbec and BOST may pay the price to get a quality SP.
Of course the Padres can stand pat and just rely on the offensive boost from Tatis and Myers and the RP coming off the IL … actually not an out of the question outcome.

Quote from fenn68 on July 9, 2022, 7:12 amSomehow the current (and coming soon) 26/40 man roster will come into the trade deadline moves. Padres appear to be getting four players (Tatis, Pomeranz, Johnson, Beaty) off the 60 day IL (not Adams) requiring four players removed from the current 40 man.
Although “in theory” the Padres have the flexibility to roster them all by keeping the out of option players on the 26 man and option the rest while still keeping a “complete” 26 man roster … however probably not the best possible. So, have choices in selecting the four to be removed from the 40 man.
In part, that may explain the reluctance to add any non-roster players (e.g. Castillo, Ruiz) NOW and defer any move with them until the roster is altered through the trade deadline.
If Preller is trying to add to the roster … just makes the problem worse and probably pushes him to try to move multiple roster players in a deal (e.g. 1 for 2) or move pieces for non-roster prospects. Given the FA to be after the season … Preller is probably not eager to DFA players who may impact 2023 … so timing of removals vs. adds becomes a factor.
Assuming no trades, which four should get DFA’d .. keeping in mind that a DFA’d player could get claimed off waivers (Padres save with the claiming team taking the remaining salary) or could pass through waivers (Padres would remain on the hook for the remaining salary … and no CBT relief).
It is not a simple decision tree before the desire for trade deadline moves are considered.

Quote from Randy Manese on July 9, 2022, 8:38 amIF they don't trade anyone on the current 40-man, then my predictions. are that they DFA Scott, Kerr, Knehr and Batten to get Tatis, Pomeranz, Johnson and Beaty back on the 40-man. The other possibility is that Beaty does not make it back on the 40 man and is DFA'd/released. Still need room for Profar, Myers, Morejon, Suarez and Wilson so I don't see how you just release/DFA any other players on the current roster and get absolutely nothing although could gain a prospect through waiver negotiations. Suarez is probably on the shakiest ground of all those coming off the short injured list.
Could send down Abrams, Hill and Wilson, after activating him, and keep Morejon down longer at AAA but I think the Padres really liked what they saw when he was up. Would someone take Stammen off our hands - he's been the weak spot in the bullpen but is an icon for this team. I wish he would gracefully retire but that's probably not going to happen even though he'll probably do that at the end of the season.
Should be very interesting to see what develops in the next 23 days. If you could trade Lamet, Hill, Stammen and Suarez for some lower level prospects that might work; don't think you'll get much for Kerr or Knehr or Scott or Batten.

PContreras A+ ball would be DFA way before any of these specs..so would Azocar for that matter

Quote from Henry Silvestre on July 9, 2022, 9:15 amBTW...Triston Casas 1B (Bosox #2 spec baseballs top 20) almost ready for MLB... could a Snell + Voit package net us this ODD top 20 spec..he isn't the speed tools guy.. he is a masher with a disciplined bat.. think Naylor with a better set of tools... sure he us a top 20 baseball spec ..but not like other top 20 guys.. 1B/DH types usually don't rank here... his value is somewhat that of a 60-75 type spec because of position and athleticism (lack of)... could be out 1B/DH in 2023

Quote from fenn68 on July 9, 2022, 9:43 amIf this exercise is based on no trades ... just DFAs ... has to be a bit strategic in keeping players that actually may help later in the season if injuries happen while not bailing on some future talent. My cuts:
- Sullivan (C) ... older, not good D, covered by 3 other catchers on the 40 man
- Scott (RHRP) ... older, not all that impressive in AAA, more fringe arm
- Kerr (LHRP) ... supposedly a big arm but not really seen that, lacks control, bypassed by Morejon and eventually Castillo as LHP support along with Pomeranz returning.
- EITHER: Batten or Contreras
- Contreras is the least likely to contribute in 2022 or 2023 ... could clear waivers ... but the Padres liked him enough to protect him while injured and have a shortage of plus arms in the system
- Batten is probably at best a role player in the ML and more an INF where there is a lot of competition with higher ceilings ... could clear waivers given little ML experience and age. Might be why he was added to the 40 man knowing this situation would come up and he (vs a better prospect) would be on the bubble.
Reality suggests that Preller will have some deals to ease the crunch.
I guess it is not out of the question that Beaty and Johnson get DFA'd coming out of the 60 day IL. Johnson, when healthy, is effective but he is a FA after the season and with only 2 months in the season how confident will the Padres be he is better than who he bumps from the 26 man (remember Pomeranz and Suarez have already bumped arm and Morejon and Wilson look to be strong contenders to make the 26 man ... maybe ahead of Johnson). If Johnson looks good in rehab ... actually he may get claimed with only about $1MM left on his contract.

Azocar is the only legit back-up CF ... so not likely a DFA but agree that Knehr is not getting DFA'd. For what it is worth Contreras is also a Top 30 ranked ahead of Kerr and Batten ... however, don't think that rankings make any difference to Preller

Batten/CJ and Tatis have some CF experience .. and assuming Reynolds/Hays or fallback option Laureano are AJPs 1 /1a and plan b. GRISHMAN would be the backup CFer
