Trades June/July/Deadline
Quote from fenn68 on July 7, 2022, 12:32 pmWith Myers returning ... Tatis returning ... plus the potential of Ruiz being added ... maybe the Padres take a different approach in moving players off the roster to clear payroll for adds in separate deals.
With Myers back ... and Mazara doing well ... and Tatis potentially in the OF ... and Ruiz maybe arriving COULD we trade Voit ($5MM contract) and clear the DH slot for rotation of all of the above. Just need to have a team take Voit (and his contract) and don't need a real return ... the buyer knows they can non-tender him so not a long term commitment.
I am over Voit and his swing for the moon approach to every AB ... with about a 33%+ K rate and only a 111 wRC+ based on his HR.
With the RP returning (or available to get promoted) ... deal one of the more costly RP ... again for peanuts just to clear CBT space. Going to have to make moves anyway. Add this savings to Voit's savings and carve out enough to fund the add one of a Bell, Contreras, Reynolds type ... acquired using prospects only.

Quote from BoosterSD on July 7, 2022, 12:44 pmI was thinking about the same thing, with Myers coming back off a knee injury, it would be better served having him play less OF and less wear and tear on the knee.
And Voit while having 9 more HRs over Myers, that comes in about 80 more ABs over Myers. Voit only has 16 more RBIs than Myers. So really, what value is Voit really providing?

Quote from Jeremy Hill on July 7, 2022, 4:08 pmThe Giants traded for a guy who's 1-9 with a 6 ERA in AAA. He'll probably start and go 6+ scoreless against us tomorrow.

Quote from BoosterSD on July 8, 2022, 8:18 amHow about this trade, will not provide a player in return for this season but will help alleviate SDs CBT crunch which would help with additional moves.
PHI gets Nola and Lamet, SD gets AA OFer Jhailyn Ortiz.
PHI gets a back up C and he gets to play with his brother, along with an arm they throw into their BP. SD saves about $2M± for the balance of the season, and gets a corner OFer for the future.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on July 8, 2022, 8:34 amShould Reynolds become available to us What is the absolute limit you are willing to trade for him?
Hassell # 1 spec + Campusano # 2 spec + P Wethers + # 5 Eguy Rosario...... is my limit... yes a lot but it's 3 yrs and 2 months of the closest thing I can think to Steve Finley

I can see Nola + Lamet (Cubs love him..always ask for him in trade talks) + SP Knehr type trade for Contreras... Nola low cost and control and Lamet (arb 3 next yr) might be enticing low costs for a team 2 or so yrs away from turning up the dial...if Lamet finds IT again he could be a great fit in Chicago... maybe adding Knehr (who looked terrific in SDP earlier in the year in long relief) is adding too much... BUT Contreras is basically going to get a lot of attention at the deadline ...every single contender except the Blue Jays could use a C/DH like him and while some (LAD) won't make him a priority...others (SDP/SF) will.... one way to eliminate options..is to take care of business and beat the Giants to a pulp over these next 3 games...

No on Hassell. Rather give up Abrams than Hassell.

Quote from Randy Manese on July 8, 2022, 8:58 amI believe Aaron Nola becomes a FA at the end of the season so that link-up may not be for long, besides I always hoped it would be the other way, i.e., we get Aaron Nola to pair with Austin Nola. My quick look into the Ortiz indicates just over the Mendoza line BA this year and last year. Not sure he is roster-able with those number even though he has flashed some power. Phillies are already over the first luxury tax benchmark, so not sure they'd add Austin Nola and Lamet when the upgrade is likely to be minimal. Interesting thought, however, and I'd accept Mickey Moniak for the pair if it was just a salary dump on our side. Moniak had a great spring before being injured and may still have something left in the tank.
With regard to Reynolds, I go back and forth regarding Hassell especially since I preferred Zac Veen to Hassell in the draft. However, if Abrams is going to end up in the OF and can't improve his OBP by getting his BB rate up, then I think the package proposed by Henry is doable, substituting Abrams for Hassell. Pirates have a great prospect in Henry Davis, who is currently at catcher, but that might not be his best position. Campusano is already a better catcher and likely can blossom in that ballpark in Pittsburgh pairing with Davis.

I was thinking Moniak as well, being a Carlsbad kid coming home would be a neat story. Just was thinking he at the moment is less than Grisham. Were as Ortiz according to MLB pipeline has been improving this season, so something to grow on.
