Do we hate Myers enough to trade him for Gallo ? How about Lamet for Gallo ? You know AJ won't stop till he has all of his old Rangers here.

I dont think that NYY would want anything to do with Myers, even if performance and money had nothing to do with it. They are already RHH heavy, especially in the OF, which is why they got Gallo in the first place. Now Gallo hasnt performed in NYY like in TEX, and speculation is he is not a NYY guy. Doesnt like the fish bowl that is NYY. So with that being said, do you think Myers is any better to handle that than Gallo?

Better luck trying Lamet for Gallo.

Gallo for Myers is an interesting thought. It would free up some money for us and maybe give the Yankees a little more consistency. Most estimates I've seen have the Yankees just under the 250m threshold though. I would think they would aim higher than Wil Myers if they were going to cross it and trigger the increased penalties.

Gallo is a DFA candidate at this point... we could pick him up for minimum after he clears waivers... not giving up Lamet who has looked terrific in AA/AAA lately...because of $$$ Lamet is a trade chip for us...but he also has 1 yr of control left after this one so I would bet his value is way higher than Gallo's....

With that said..a Gallo change of scene and in AJPs hands (Mazara/Nick/Proffar/Alfaro familiarity) I can see a Huge turn around for the OFer...at the benefit of the Padres...

Boston 1B situation and SP health..screams match made in heaven... not sure how far or how crazy a BLOCKBUSTER type deal with the Padres makes sense BUT

Hosmer 1B (Huge upgrade for Bosox)

Snell SP *would be their #2 at worst

Voit DH - how many more hits and HRs would he have in Boston with him peppering the green monster vs warning track outs at Petco +20+?

For

BP vet Dierkman

DH JD Martinez

Kind of a win/win for both teams... $$ for 22 favors Pads a little bit ...$$ for 23 helps RedSox with resignings incoming by controlling 3 roster spots with fairly low cost options...

SDP gets Dierkman for 22 (has options on him at around $7mil for 23/24 combined) and JD Mart is a FA who we could resign or not in the offseason freeing up $19mil+..

While we take a slight step back ..2 bats 1 SP for RP and 1 DH bat... that bat is a Huge upgrade... and the natural move afterwards would be Bell 1B (Washington) and maybe a SP (not necessary Castillo) but a secondary arm like Contreras (2 month rental) just to have SP available in case of injuries...

What ya'll think?

Some low cost OF options Jordan Luplow (AZ) .897 OPS 30 bombs career vs lhp... as a perfect platoon partner for Mazara (Mazara vs RHP/Luplow vs LHP) could give us a legit AS RF type of combined production at minimal cost...

By comparison Myers in a lot more ABs vs lhp 42 HRs. 797....100 pts less...even though Wil/Mazara platoon would still be pretty nice..assuming Myers finds his power which simply vanished so far in 2022...

David Peralta would be another stick (low cost) we could pursue....

Myers / Gallo: First, no one is going to take Myers and his contract ... he is a FA to be and has not played for months and (if lucky) only get a couple of plate appearances before the deadline. If he has any remaining upside for 2022 it is with the Padres. Agree the NYY will shoot for a more reliable OF (preferably LHH) and then likely just DFA Gallo ... who will pass through waivers (no reason for any team to pick his contract) ... and be available for pro-rated league minimum. Not sure anyone will sign him until the winter (if then).

I know many of the pro-Gallo media a suggesting it is playing in NY is the issue BUT have also heard some scouts suggest that they see erosion in his swing ... which he refuses to modify. Not the guy you want to experiment with in the final two months of a playoff run.

Lamet should be blended in the pot of Padre RP in play for being moved but sort of depends on who other teams want (and what is the return). By himself, he would get a "nice" lower level prospect or included in a package may close the deal. Not sure either is best for the Padres. Yes would clear a 40 man slot and clear some CBT space ... but the push against that is he is controlled in 2023 (and a number of RP are becoming FA ... or are just ineffective) ... so he may be important for the 2023 team ... plus he has been effective out of the pen in EP (we know he has always had the stuff). In AAA is value is marginal but if he gets elevated to the 26 man and pitchers well ... much better trade value in the winter if he is not kept. If pitches badly ... just non-tender him to clear the salary. For me a better gamble to go the long game with him rather than sell low.

When I look at a position player's potential worth to a team, I tend to focus on two analytics - HctX and wRC+.  These are two normalized data that provide comparative hard hit contact rates and runs per plate appearance, respectively, where 100 is the average major leaguer.  In Gallo's case he is currently at 68 for HctX (below Kim and even below Mazara), moreover he hasn't reached 100 since 2018.  As for wRC+, Gallo is currently at 82, which means he's creating runs at a rate 18% below the average major leaguer.  Again, he was in the 80's last year but did do well in the COVID shortened season with 123.  Based on these analytics, Gallo would not be a good add for the Padres, especially since his K% is almost 40% - a potentially huge hole in the Padres line-up given you have to play him if you trade for him and the fact that PETCO tends to drive down hard contact rates.  Not worth the salary even in the short term, in my opinion.

What are good to elite HctX and wRC+ rates?  The very good for both tend to start around 115-120 while the elite are usually over 125.  Here you will find guys like Vlady Jr (129/133) and Manny Machado (122/155).  I say find someone else who will be more of a contributor than Gallo.  Not going to get anyone elite, but at least a consistent bat that's a little better than average (low 100's/115+).

Just an opinion but trying to add Hosmer or Myers ... with their contracts ... into any trade for a good player will either kill the trade (which apparently it has been doing for years) or require to start adding some premium prospects of much greater value than the player being acquired.

If 2022 roster is to be improved ... have to work around those two and their contracts. In 2023 Myers takes care of himself as a FA and (still hold hope) Hosmer opts out.

Fans are always eager to get the trades going ... but in reality the GMs are not and like to carry the process to the 11th hour (there are of course exceptions). Given the timing of the All-Star break starting July 18th ... that should be the venue where GMs get together and start getting serious about moves ... moves that may come down over the following week and a half. All the GM will have a better sense of where they stand and the health of their players ... new needs or trade targets that get injured.

Still speculating is a fun exercise.

Exactly. Trading Hosmer would cost the Padres Hassell at the very least. Probably more. Then what, trade for replacement bats? Trade who? The Royals will absolutely ask for Wood in return for Benitendi. They MAY settle for more lower ranking prospects, but not guys like Reiss Knehr. They will demand players like Robert Gasser, Jarlin Susana and Eguy Rosario.

If the Padres want to clear cap space they can trade Snell and get a prospect or 2 back.
