Trades June/July/Deadline

PreviousPage 15 of 125Next

Who knows if I am the Cubs I'd take Myers in a heart beat only owed like 7mil at Deadline.. I can pick up a 45 spec like Howell and ask for a draft Comp pick to boot... Done deal..no brainer..Hos is like $50 mil.. whole different animal...  he aint going nowhere unless someone wants him at 3 1/2/$50 which is what he is owed...3/39 in the offseason much easier to see some value on...

I don’t know,Bell is a two month rental so they won’t get very much for him.

I’d prefer AJ get a corner OF that can also play 1b with at least one more year of control so if he hits we can put him at 1b next year if we can move Hoz or just release/bench him.
Not sure how many guys like this there are but off the top of my head…..Garrett Cooper maybe?

I guess it is subjective as to who is a good prospect and who is not (and in WASH case ... their opinion is all that matters). Agree that as a rental Bell ... by himself will not get a top line prospect ... more likely two second tier types that few will agree on has to ML potential. The other issue with dealing Bell from a WASH view ... who is actually trying to get him, is there a bidding war? Not hearing much on that front given he is a 1B/DH ... on the other hand if the QO remains in place they have to factor in the potential value of the Comp Pick ... so need an offer better than the upside of that. I would watch out for BOST here.

C'mon, Mr.P. you know baseball better than that!!

Josh Bell is a switch hitting 1B, that is #3 in BA(.318) and OBP(.399), #4 in SLG %, and #2 in OPS, with 12 HRs and 47 RBIs, and almost as many walks as strike outs.

This is exactly the type of bat that playoff teams overpay for EVERY season. Especially since he will only cost about $3.6M for the balance of the season.

So yes, WAS will get at least 3 prospects for him, one probably in the top 100 level, and then 2 mid level guys.

At least NYY and LAD dont need 1B and probably dont need a DH, so they should be out of the bidding.

I will go back to may very long shot deal for Bell ... and this more hope than reality but

Padres get Bell (2 month rental)

WASH is a terrible team, nowhere the CBT cap, and will lose about 10 off their 26 man roster via FA after the season ... they need bodies, they have the money.

Padres trade a top prospect (Campusano) and Hosmer (WASH takes the full contract) with the hope that Hosmer can help their rebuild as a team leader ($39MM/3 years is not burdensome in this market ... and if lucky he opts out). Padres add two next tier prospects to prop up WASH 2023 roster ... Rosario and Knehr? Essentially WASH buys Campusano, Rosario, and Knehr if Hosmer stays and has a steal if Hosmer walks.

Padres have a 2022 upgrade at 1B in a pennant run and clear $18MM CBT space going forward for the next three years to sign whomever. Only lose Campusano as a top prospect and Rosario (buried behind other INF) and a decently ranked pitcher in Knehr (who is still a long shot for ML success).

Not going to happen ... but

I think if you add Weathers, with the other players you suggest, deal gets done.

Bell for Hosmer, Weathers, Campusano, Rosario, and Knehr.

All of last year's deals are here for reference.

Who knows how the expanded playoffs will change things, but rentals have not commanded nearly the return they once did in recent years.

Depends on how badly the Nats want to add some prospects.

They could just sign Bell rather than be “stuck” with Hosmer.

The fact we’d be willing to give them good prospects to make the deal for two months of Bell tells you they’d be better off just keeping Bell.

From what what most now think ... the "value" of prospects has never been higher and teams even seeking deadline help are just not going to move legit quality prospects. Somewhat an evolution based on:

  1. the marginal / inconsistent benefit in those final two months of deadline acquisitions ... maybe subjective but did the buying teams really improve their season and win the pennant (make the playoffs) because of the add?
  2. In an expensive world for TOP ML talent coupled with the CBT ... retaining top prospects who will be controlled for 6 years / low cost allows teams to spend more (to market levels) for the established premium ML talent. Basically create a 26 man roster that is a blend of low cost and high cost talent rather than some quality high cost talent and a series of holes filled by non-ML quality.

do think the expanded playoffs will take a number of sellers out of the mix ... looking at the current "last team in" in terms of losses and look at the teams in pursuit ... there are quite a few that are just a good winning streak from being right there.

Plus, some teams knowing the expanded playoffs will be around going forward ... and a "close" this year team may be very reluctant to deal the controlled pieces who they see as a base to add to over the winter to get them closer to the playoffs in 2023.

Your assuming that Bell would re-sign with WASH ... a team that will have minimal talent (not counting SOTO). Plus from WASH's side ... they have to extend Soto (first priority) and that will cost record breaking levels. A team based on mega salaries of Soto - Strasburg - Corbin - Bell and nothing else is destined to lose given no support talent.

Plus, in theory, the could make this trade and in the offseason re-sign Bell for DH/1B platoon with Hosmer (if he did not opt out).

That's actually a great concept trade..... Josh Bell or Contreras on a similar package would be outstanding...I like Bell as a cleanup batter..(Voit drops to 6th where his swing and miss /Swing and slg would play better... Profar/Tatis/Manny/Bell/Crone Zone/Voit/Alfaro/Mazara/(Kim-CJ-Grushman-- depending on what position El Nino is pkaying)

God what a difference that would make...thats a championship type lineup
