Seidler clearly wants a ring and is willing to spend to get one. I don't think he would have signed off on the Soto deal if he wasn't going to be ok with paying the luxury tax again next year.
This is a really good perspective. You dont trade for Soto, and then nibble on the barrel next season.
I would not be surprised to see them resign Bell and Clevinger and have a full effort through Soto's control, and then maybe tear it down after 2024, depending on what happens.
Plus, with the team we have, and the way you guys who still live local are showing up to the games, the atmosphere that SD is providing every night, I think you will see players want to come/stay here, and wont command the highest dollar to do so. I think Clevinger is going to be a prime example of that.
I live in Anaheim and I've been to 5 games this season. I am actually thinking of getting season tix for next year.

Quote from JasonE135 on August 3, 2022, 12:06 pmFor anyone expecting Adrian Morejon to be a legitimate starting candidate next year I refer you to his total IP #s by year:
2017- 63
2018- 65.1
2019- 36
2020- 19.1
2021- 13.1
2022- 10.1
Also Nomar Mazara has been productive for us. I would think he would be a member of any RF competition next year.

You are right, both he and Gore had the same issue. Never built up enough innings in the MiL, to carry through an entire season in the ML. Mostly, its been a product of Morejons injuries.
Mazara is a nice 2nd piece, and his BA is nice, but it seems that he may have given up some of his power for BA, which is fine. Or maybe, a little more time with the revised swing, and the power comes back and keeps the BA at the same time.
I would think that Preller would love to have him back next season, as long as its at the right price.

I didn't realize we had some control over Mazara next year.

Quote from BoosterSD on August 3, 2022, 12:51 pmToying with the idea of the Soto extension in my brain. 15 years, at $34M per year, equals out to $510M. That should do it, dont you think?
So here is the question, if $34M is the number, look at it this way. He made $17.1M this season in arb, and that was double from the 2021 season. So its easy to see his 2023 number to be at least $25M+, and 2024 number to push $33M+. So you would only save $10M or less in dollars to not sign him to the $500M in the offseason.
Between Tatis, Machado, and Musgrove, their CBT number is $76.29M, and add the $34M for Soto, that comes to $110.29M for the 5 years of Musgroves contract.

Wouldnt that be funny if we got him back for league minimum for the year, and MIL paying the balance of the salary.

He will be a FA … so how much money would the Padres be willing to re-sign him vs using the money elsewhere? Side: Mazara recent performance is showing some signs of slipping … so for him the next two months is important (If he plays at all).

Or if he clears waivers … Padres could sign him to a minor league deal with an invite to ST … that does not eat a 2022 40 man slot that will be needed for Tatis, Suarez, Pomeranz, and Johnson. They are at 38.
