I came up a little different in build a team / CBT for 2023:

Looked at AAV for players under contract (8): $125MM

Estimated ARB decisions .(8) ... big ups for Soto and Hader: $51MM

Roster players TBD at minimum (10): $8-9MM

Cash to BOST for Hosmer: $12.3MM

Benefits, remainder of 40 man, etc: $20MM

Assumed Profar, Martinez, and Suarez all opted out: 0

That gets me to $216MM ... about $17MM under the $233MM first threshold.

That would have to cover replacing (re-signing) Bell, Drury, Profar, Mazara, Manaea, Clevinger, Martinez, Suarez ... without much in the way of internal candidates (except maybe RP)

Note if Profar, Martinez, and Suarez did NOT opt out ... Padres would be OVER the CBT by about $3MM.

Either scenario puts a squeeze on developing a 2023 roster given the FA departures.

Arb $$ are calculated weird ..looked up Soto 17mil foe 2022 but only 6mil AAV. Harder $11mil but only $3.33 AAV

So that $51;u projected might be more like upper $20's

Well in 2022 those are partial years for SD. In 2023 ... since both are ARB players ... the AAV will be their 2023 salaries in 2023.

Hopefully Pomeranz comes back and is effective in 2022 and creates some trade value for this winter. He is a FA after 2023 and the Padres have Castillo - Cosgrove - Weathers - Groome as potential LH options for the pen to replace him if he is dealt. He carries a $8.5MM AAV. That would go a long way to fill some of the potential holes if combined with my estimate of $17MM ... and maybe get a return piece that also fills a weakness or a near term prospect.

I guess a lot depends on how 2022 plays out but if they have some faith in Pomeranz / Castillo as the LH closing options ... the could flip Hader (est. AAV via arb around $15MM) who also is a FA after 2023. Adding Hader's AAV to the $17MM gives a pretty good pot (around $32MM) ... could cover re-signing two of Bell, Profar, Clevinger ... depending on them and the faith in the option for the one not signed (and who they get in return for Hader). I guess I would have Clevinger #1 on the re-sign list ... quality SP is just hard to land. #2 Profar for OF over Beaty/Azocar. Bell would be a luxury given what should be a very large contract while adding a serviceable DH can be had at a much lower cost.

I don't see Campusano in anyone's projections next year. I don't he will spend another season in AAA. He could very well be our MLB min DH.

Here's Drury's Home/Road splits this year ...

https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.fcgi?id=drurybr01&year=2022&t=b

Split G GS PA AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS BAbip tOPS+ sOPS+
Home 52 50 223 205 41 61 16 1 12 38 2 1 15 48 0.298 0.354 0.561 0.915 0.338 114 152
Away 40 37 162 145 21 35 6 1 8 21 0 1 14 36 0.241 0.309 0.462 0.771 0.262 81 119

I expect we'll see more of the .309 OBP than the .354 ... caveat emptor ...

He was in mine as the 3rd catcher on the list.

Looking at the remaining 40 man roster after the end of the season he has to be on the active for 2023 (over Sullivan / Gallagher) because he is all that is left.

In a roster that would have Beaty, Azocar, Batten plus Campusano ... he would not be the last in and could DH or free up Alfaro to DH. Low cost / long control is in his favor (over Alfaro) ... he just needs to show he can hit in the ML. Big ST for him next year (unless he is traded).

If the CBT and filling other holes become the priority  ... he could actually displace Alfaro (with a decent AAV and a FA after 2023) who could be a trade chip. Nola / Campusano as the catching duo?

I just don't think we really need to worry about the luxury tax anymore. Seidler clearly wants a ring and is willing to spend to get one. I don't think he would have signed off on the Soto deal if he wasn't going to be ok with paying the luxury tax again next year.

This is a really good perspective. You dont trade for Soto, and then nibble on the barrel next season.

I would not be surprised to see them resign Bell and Clevinger and have a full effort through Soto's control, and then maybe tear it down after 2024, depending on what happens.

Plus, with the team we have, and the way you guys who still live local are showing up to the games, the atmosphere that SD is providing every night, I think you will see players want to come/stay here, and wont command the highest dollar to do so. I think Clevinger is going to be a prime example of that.

Yeah was thinking about this...I think we are at least "stay under tier 2" team now..which is circa $250mil..

AJP was just on Ben&Woods and said something like "you don't bring in a guy like that (Soto) without having a 3 yr a 5 yr or a 10yr plan in place"...

Also keep in mind AJP had a plan for such a scene of prospect exodus..looking back at the draft 14 of 21 drafted were College players . . And 13 of 20 NDFA were College kids also .. faster rise to mlb

At this point with Yu and Snell dropping off for 2024..a push for Ohtani wouldn't surprise me at all in FA
