Has to. Plus with the trade of Gore ... Weathers struggling and Clevinger / Manaea FA ... some level of near term insurance for 2023 if re-signings don't happen and injures hit the staff. Not much SP in the near term queue to rely on succeeding.

Also, could see at some point a conversion to a LH long RP if Morejon becomes a SP and both Pomeranz and Hader go FA after 2023.

Actually the Padres ... even after paying that money ... clears CBT space going down from Hosmer's $18MM AAV to the $12MM+/- cost of the cash transfer. I guess that is good.

Have no idea on this one either. No issue with moving Rooker (40 man roster) but don't get the add of Gallagher (also 40 man roster).

ML experience .. about 29 ... good defense / no offense ... low cost / 3 year control I think BUT I don't think he has minor league options for 2023. Alfaro - Nola - Campusano- Sullivan - Gallagher (the last two barely insurance level).

Does Preller have a vision for the winter of dealing Alfaro or Nola giving Gallagher the back-up? Could the Padres envision Alfaro / Nola spending time at DH/1B requiring a back-up catcher in 2023? Where does Campusano fit in all this?

2023 Nola - Alfaro - Campusano - share C - 1B - DH with Gallagher on the bench? Hosmer, Myers, Voit, and Bell are (or will be gone). One (or more) of Nola - Alfaro - Campusano winter trade chips?
