Trade Possibilities

PreviousPage 6 of 27Next

By next offseason I think Preller will have yes.

Gotta start winning soon(next year or two)or he will be out of a job.

If you allow a GM to move all in to save his job, then you're a poorly managed organization. The fact is he was picked up as a scouting guru. If he doesn't produce anything through his field of expertise in 5 years (2016-2020) then he doesn't deserve an attempt to save it by other means.

No one said anything about going "all in".

I just mentioned that we are getting closer to using Minor League prospects to build the Major league team via some trades.

Not suggesting gutting the Farm.....

Agreed.  I do think part of the measure of AJP's performance evaluation should be how he uses talent his regime has brought in/developed to acquire pieces to go with homegrown players. But your right, if he just deals it away in a big rush like in 2015 he is a fail.

Except the surrounding context makes it implicit. We currently do not have a single homegrown piece that is performing above league average. To win soon (in order to save his job) that would require obtaining pieces that will produce above average. When you have to build an entire roster that way (5SP, 7 fielders). 4 if Lucchesi isn't a TJ'd up in 6 months. You're selling the farm to achieve those results since you can't wait on the adjustment period of those not already in the majors to win in 19-20

They're 4.5 out with Joey..Hedges and Myers on the shelf..they get Archer and Joey back...now you have Ross/Lyles/Archer /Joey and Richard ...that's not great..but its pretty solid 1-5...which we haven't had all yr..... Team starting to score too..add Urias >anyone we have now at 2B... And Myers to the equation...and not great but the rest of the West is not good either...we have a chance... Fans get hopes up a little..revenue goes up a little

Besides the Archer trade is not necessarily all in for this year...it is a play to help out a little now...with an eye at 2019..2020 and 2021 at an annual avg of around $9..$9.5 mil or so for a TOR/#2 type....

I call it a 2 for 1 investment..1 2018 maybe sneak in...2 solid arm we will need to add at some point in 19 or 20 anyway...why not kill 2 birds with 1 stone...

No.

That seems to be your favorite answer lately.  Get off your high horse and explain why and not just answer "No".  You add nothing to the conversation with responses like that.  Flame away

They don't have to be a homegrown piece to already be an established part of the future "contending" Padres.

Hosmer for instance...he isn't homegrown and maybe he is over paid but he most certainly is our firstbaseman for the next 4-5 years at least.

So wouldn't that pretty much make Naylor a trade piece?

Maybe we keep him and try to make him an outfielder......I just don't think Preller will sacrifice the defense.

So is it that far fetched to think that Naylor could be part of a trade for a major league player?

I guess my main point is that the farm is pretty much rebuilt(to say the least),so if any trades are made in the next year or two it will be US trading the prospects instead of us trading "for" prospects.

That's all I was trying to say......

Would be nice to package a few" prospects" for a current major leaguer.

There must be some team looking to purge salary? And obviously we're okay taking on money for even bad players(see Mitchell, Headley, Hughes).

When are most trades consumated? Is there a deadline?

We are going to have to make trades in the near future, or start losing guys in the Rule 5 draft.  I can see us packaging players that won't be put on the 40 man in order to get a return on our investment.
