Trade Possibilities
Quote from sportwarrior on August 5, 2018, 9:56 amSounds like we just let Ross go without any compensation, which is a bit surprising but I don't think there would have been much in the way of a return for him anyway. I think the Padres are much more interested in seeing guys they need to protect like Brett Kennedy or Jacob Nix.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 5, 2018, 10:01 amI wouldn’t have expected anything for Lyles.......and I guess considering we are “so deep” in the lower system we Don’t have room for just “a guy” which is all we probably would have gotten for Ross.

Quote from fenn68 on August 5, 2018, 10:53 amI suspect that given there were no offers of consequence for Ross before the trade deadline (otherwise would have been dealt) this just becomes a housecleaning start to start the test of the other pitching options for 2019. Saves a few bucks. Same goes for Lyles.
Padres had one open 40 man slot and added (then called up) Wingenter for the pen ... he would have been required to be added to be protected from Rule 5 this winter. I guess that also covers one of the slots Lyles / Ross open on the 25 man
So still 2 open on the 40 and 1 open on the 25. Since they are at 12 pitchers ... they will add another arm. Lauer, Perdomo, Mitchell, and Brewer are on the DL so maybe ... Makita and Wieck are in AAA (and on the 40 man) .... but room for a non-roster add like Kennedy. Might have to do with if they want to get "last looks" at some marginal players before DFA or jump start the prospects .... plus do they want to see Erlin / Strahm in starting roles for a bit (thus calling up a RP). I guess they have to make the call today to complete the 25 man

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 5, 2018, 11:52 amI really want to see Strahm get a real shot at the rotation for next season.
I like Erlin as long relief.
I hate to say it but I think that’s where Lauer will be most valuable as well.

Since they first got him, the Padres have wanted to see Strahm as a starter ... will only be 28 next opening day and made it through 2018 being solid in relief. Given the dearth of good SP options ... probably a very good bet that he will be a starter.
Agree that Erlin may be best served as a RP ... sort of depends on how the competition plays in ST.
I will give Lauer a longer leash ... he will still only be 23 next opening day and is a pitcher that is best with strong command so only after a short ML view deserves more time. You may end up being right but for now ....

Quote from fenn68 on August 5, 2018, 3:31 pmWe will not know but teams drop a lot (if not all) their players on revocable waivers in August (not all at the same time). Wonder who the Padres have put out there so far? Clearly Ross and Lyles who were claimed and let go. There could have been some that cleared and still could be moved? There could have been some that were claimed and the player withdrawn?
Still could see some more bodies moved in August opening some spots for some prospect call-ups.
