Trade Possibilities
Quote from Cptjack on June 7, 2018, 4:05 pmQuote from dvmin98 on June 7, 2018, 3:43 pmWe are going to have to make trades in the near future, or start losing guys in the Rule 5 draft. I can see us packaging players that won't be put on the 40 man in order to get a return on our investment.
Players that can't make a bad teams 40 man where the most spots are available have what value to good teams? As Windsor said the only reason to make such a move that will aid us is for salary relief. Otherwise, the only way to clear space on the 40man is by moving MLers off of it.

Quote from Cptjack on June 7, 2018, 4:20 pmQuote from David Nevin on June 7, 2018, 2:17 pmThey don't have to be a homegrown piece to already be an established part of the future "contending" Padres.
So is it that far fetched to think that Naylor could be part of a trade for a major league player?
I guess my main point is that the farm is pretty much rebuilt(to say the least),so if any trades are made in the next year or two it will be US trading the prospects instead of us trading "for" prospects.
There was 7 for a reason. It's not far-fetched, but that's what perennial losers do. Move "blocked" talent for 2nd-3rd rate major leaguers just to have Galvis, Ludwick, Edmonds at a position. If you package him then you're shooting at the sky.
The farm can be built to the heavens with prospects. Until the waves crash in the majors it's meaningless. In no conceivable reality is moving those prospects without having anything whatsoever to build around a sound strategy. When your fanbase questions who will be the required all star and the response is the closer. Then you know you have nothing.

Well as the years approach, the team will steadily improve with the addition of free agents and possible trades to the point where you will have a plethora of players eligible for the 40 man roster. When the '16 J2's get closer and closer, with all the players we added in the one year, we may have a glut of players we could start losing to the Rule 5

Again your making assumptions about my comment.
I never suggested we should go after "2nd-3rd rate major league players."
This is actually getting a bit ridiculous.
Are you really disagreeing with my point or just adding things to it I didn't say to make yours?
It's either one or the other....either you think we will continue to trade players on our major league roster for minor league prospects or you agree that we are about to the point where we will instead be trading minor league prospects for players to put on the 25 man roster?
Which do you think is most likely next offseason?
BTW....my comments have more to do with the depth of the minor league system than the quality of the major league roster.
I never intended to say the major league roster was built....that's actually the opposite of my point.

I'm not making any assumptions about your comments. Those are the logical conclusions of them. You're not tracking your statements and are expecting them to be allowed to exist in a vacuum. If we have 1 piece to move in Naylor and we hold the rest of the prospects because we have no direction to go in the majors, then we will get a 2nd or 3rd rate player in return. If we move additional prospects to acquire talent, then you're attempting to compete without a competitive roster. The likelihood of something happening does not make it correct.

If we make trades next off season it will be to continue to stockpile prospects.
Not sure what I was thinking........

Quote from Commie on June 9, 2018, 4:20 pmSP are starting to go down on contenders: Tanaka, Strasburg, Ohtani. Not optimistic any will be back in less than a month. Do any of the team's try to get out in front of the market and deal for Ross?
I'd be looking for at least one 55 FV guy and a lottery ticket if I'm AJP. Upper level catching would be a nice target all other things being equal.

Quote from WindsorUK on June 9, 2018, 4:30 pmAnyone interested in Manny Machado? Or are the numbers( prospects to get him and AAS) just too ridiculous for us?

Quote from MrPadre19 on June 9, 2018, 5:41 pmWe don’t need a rental player.
I’d rather go after Scooter Gennett who still has another year of Arb. Eligibility and wouldn’t cost near as much.

He can probably be had for a decent top 10 (not 5) Padres prospect and maybe 2 or 3 other top 12-25 guys...but only way this makes sense is to go all in and get an extension signed as a condition to the trade....what number does Machado say ok and doesn't test $300 mil for 10-12....$350? More...
Would Myers + Naylor + Nix + Maton + GALVIS net us Machado (with a pre arranged extension upon making his way to SD)... Acquiring him means $$$ will be tied up between Hosmer and him and the club will look for their young guys to progress...I thought about this the other day..a generational talent like Machado would be awesome to acquire ..we probably would only have enough $$ to bring on one solid #2 SP to anchor the P rotation and would need the kids and some bargains (think Ross..Lyles types) to all work simultaneously to make it work...
