Trade Possibilities

To me, one pitcher, even someone as good as Thor, does not catapult this team into contention. There are still serious holes in the lineup and in the rotation. It's a very delicate line to walk because if you only capitalize on 1 or 2 years of control, the likelihood of resigning a player like that is next to nothing due to our market standing. I'd prefer to keep building the farm up (with another likely top 10 pick coming) and then selectively go after free agent arms to get closer to contending, THEN make a splashy move.
After another Draft we will really be lacking places for these kids to play.
Especially if we go adding Free agents as well.
I realize we could just start releasing guys....and many of them need to be(I'm looking at you Mitchell!),but injury and regression could cost us alot of value in some of these top prospects we have now who are blocked at the major league level.
Thinking of Naylor in particular.......his value as a trade piece is probably as high right now as it will ever be.
One injury or a bad season next year and he loses most of that value.
Let me ask this question of those of you who are much smarter than I am(most of you),how many of our top 10 "pitching" prospects can we realistically expect to be top of the rotation major league players?
One?.....Two?
I'm thinking one Ace....2-3 guys who could be #2 or #3 starters....and the rest bottom of rotation/reliever/career minor leaguer.
Sound about right?
Thor is already an Ace and those are VERY hard to come by....as proven by the fact that we've only developed 1 or 2 "Ever".
I'm horrible at this but let's say Thor costs us Naylor/Mejia/Morejon/Quantrill....would that be enough?
Too much?
Mejia being the only one IMO that would hurt.
Actually I forgot about the Mets having Peter Alonso about to take over 1b....so Naylor probably wouldn't interest them.
Anyway......I say it's time to "start" thinking about trading prospects for major league "proven" players.
Think thats a fair deal for Thor. Would I be excited?Heck yeah. That said I would hate to give up any of the prospects.

Quote from David Galvan on July 25, 2018, 6:03 pmReally want Ross gone. Hope AJ flips him for something. Hopefully a package with Yates. Then again if he waits until next season to trade Yates the return will be a lot greater if Yates continues to be great.

Quote from dusty on July 25, 2018, 10:15 pmWith all the talk of Padres talking starting pitching, anyone think we make a deal before the deadline for a starter? Which one?
Totally out of left field but what if the Padres were to blow everyone away and land both Thor and DeGrom?? What would that even take? 5 or 6 of our top 100? More than that? I think if they land one of the Mets starters they need to extend them.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 26, 2018, 7:33 amI see where the Yankees are looking to trade 3B Brandon Drury.
Any interest?
Is he enough of an upgrade from CV and Spangy to pursue?
They want pitching....could we get him straight up for 2 months of Tyson Ross?

Quote from dvmin98 on July 26, 2018, 8:11 amAll this talk about trading for Archer. Apparently, Urias is a possibility. There is no way that AJ needs to trade any of our top prospects for Archer, with the exception of Quantril or maybe Mejia.
We've all been patient with the Padres and their perrineal rebuild. I'm willing to be even more patient in order to not lose any of our top prospects.
If they want to trade for Archer, then offer Quantril, Lawson and Gettys. If that's not enough, throw in Wingenter, but DO NOT include anyone else in the top 10 or Patino.

Quote from Cptjack on July 26, 2018, 10:19 amIf the Padres did anything more than a 3 team swap for Archer where we send a couple bullpen pieces to a contender I would be pretty livid. There's absolutely no one that's dispensable in the minors right now when there's no one indispensable in the majors.

Quote from sportwarrior on July 26, 2018, 11:56 amI will absolutely flip my lid if we trade any of our guys for Archer. I'd MUCH rather enjoy the excitement of watching our prospects sink or swim over the next year or two than acquire a guy like freaking Chris Archer.
If AJ really wants to do something nuts, go get someone like Thor or DeGrom. Make an ACTUAL splash for someone that legitimately would be an upgrade. Why they'd ever view Archer as a potential asset is completely beyond me. GUH

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 26, 2018, 12:35 pmIt may be different if we are talking Syndergaard or Degrom.
I agree though on Archer.
Even with attrition and injury we have so many arms a couple years away that we should be able to fill out a dang good rotation
with who we already have.
But if we could get one of those guys from the Mets I'd have no issue including Urias.
Urias will most likely be a good hitter for a long time but he's not exactly Tatis with the bat.
His limited power and speed makes him only so valuable.
My can't touch guys would be Tatis,Paddack,Baez and Gore.....maybe Logan Allen.
Plus some of the teenagers I would try to dissuade the Mets from asking for.
That still leaves tons of top prospects to dangle....Mejia,Espinoza,Morejon,Urias,Quantrill,Naylor.
Man....everytime I do this I am amazed at the depth of talent we have.
I would not want to lose Ruiz,Ornelas or Rosario.
Those three are 18(or barely 19) with high OBP and power/speed combo already in A ball.

I think that's a little harsh.
Archer two years ago was one of the best pitchers in baseball and he's still only 29.
Coming to Petco, working with Balsley, pitching in the NL West instead of the AL East he could very easily be a top 10 MLB pitcher again as soon as next season.
The issue would be the cost and how much less the cost would be than Thor or DeGrom.
Archers contract is only $8 mil a season and is controlled for 3 more seasons after this one.
Thor is Arb eligible for 3 more seasons while Degrom is also Arb eligible but for only 2 more seasons and will also make much more than $8 mil per.
Archer is the lowest cost by far dollar wise so it all comes down to the cost prospect wise.
