Trade Possibilities

Winning teams are always strong up the middle defensively ....Catcher, SS, 2B, CF....not counting the Pitcher

How legit do you guys think this is?

I hope no one from our Top 15 goes.

It's legit in that Preller has been noted to at least be checking in on Archer's price for a couple years now. No idea how far talks have gone throughout the course of those years. It would likely end up as another 2018 blunder.

Now I hear it's Archer or Syndergaard.

I was thinking about this the other day.

With the depth of our Farm why not?

Guys like Naylor are pretty much blocked.

We have really young middle infielders that may still not have a place to play in 3 years due to Tatis and Urias.

The only thing I'll say against this idea though is that i would prefer to use those assets to add some "offense".

But then again....3B is about the only position that could be a glaring hole in need of an immediate upgrade. and who you gonna get for 3B?

The Braves may be buyers and they have a young 3B in Camargo and another in Riley ready to come up.

Would we be better off trying to pry one of them away?

I absolutely love the fact we have the #1 Farm system and I love watching the Box scores and dreaming about all these guys but trading prospects for proven major league players is just good business.

Especially when your system is as deep as ours.

After all,we have guys ranked between 10-20 in our system who could easily, with 1 good season, move into the top 100.

And guys not even in our top 30 who could easily move in as well in a couple years.

Then there are all the guys in the AFL who could soon do the same.

But even more importantly all you have to do is look back 5-6 years ago at our top 10 prospect lists to see how easily a good prospect can become nothing more than that.

I understand the "quality" of our top 10 now is much higher than it was....but the point is the same.

this was our top 10 according to MLB Pipeline in 2011.

1.Casey Kelly

2.Rymer Liriano

3.Anthony Rizzo

4.Corey Luebke

5.Jaff Decker

6.Rey Fuentes

7.Drew Cumberland

8.Matt Lollis

9.Jason Hagerty

10.Donavan Tate

Again,I realize that top 10 doesn't compare to our current one but I certainly remember alot of excitement about several of those players not named Rizzo.

We are going to "have" to trade quite a few of our prospects at some point regardless.....who better to trade them for then an established top of the rotation Starter?

When was the last time we even had one of those......Jake Peavy?

Trading for one of those guys only makes sense if the organization believes they are on the verge of contention. To me, one pitcher, even someone as good as Thor, does not catapult this team into contention. There are still serious holes in the lineup and in the rotation. It's a very delicate line to walk because if you only capitalize on 1 or 2 years of control, the likelihood of resigning a player like that is next to nothing due to our market standing. I'd prefer to keep building the farm up (with another likely top 10 pick coming) and then selectively go after free agent arms to get closer to contending, THEN make a splashy move.

That's not true.

AJ could always turn around and trade Syndergaard next year or even the one after for a player/s at a position of need.

Or even other prospects that fill an organizational need.

Who knows,he could already have another trade in mind......

After another Draft we will really be lacking places for these kids to play.

Especially if we go adding Free agents as well.

I realize we could just start releasing  guys....and many of them need to be(I'm looking at you Mitchell!),but injury and regression could cost us alot of value in some of these top prospects we have now who are blocked at the major league level.

Thinking of Naylor in particular.......his value as a trade piece is probably as high right now as it will ever be.

One injury or a bad season next year and he loses most of that value.

Let me ask this question of those of you who are much smarter than I am(most of you),how many of our top 10 "pitching" prospects can we realistically expect to be top of the rotation major league players?

One?.....Two?

I'm thinking one Ace....2-3 guys who could be #2 or #3 starters....and the rest bottom of rotation/reliever/career minor leaguer.

Sound about right?

Thor is already an Ace and those are VERY hard to come by....as proven by the fact that we've only developed 1 or 2 "Ever".

I'm horrible at this but let's say Thor costs us Naylor/Mejia/Morejon/Quantrill....would that be enough?

Too much?

Mejia being the only one IMO that would hurt.

Actually I forgot about the Mets having Peter Alonso about to take over 1b....so Naylor probably wouldn't interest them.

Anyway......I say it's time to "start" thinking about trading prospects for major league "proven" players.

Just Say No to Archer.

Career ERA+ of 106 and only 92 this year.

He is an absolute KING of the Overrated.

I don't remember a lot of excitement from that list. Kelly was trashed pretty much immediate after he got here. Liriano was exciting for sure, but elbow injuries. Luebke looked good then TJ most still had him as a 4/5 before that. Decker was immediately noted as needing to take the bat off his shoulders more while in FW. Fuentes yeah. Cumberland migraine/concussion problem. Lollis, Hagerty were what? Tate was exciting any 3rd pick in the draft should excite, except no one was penciling him as a ML star after the draft.
