Trade Possibilities

PreviousPage 2 of 27Next

1. Twins who may think they can contend just lost catcher Jason Castro for the season (he was their #1)

2. Twins' back up is serviceable but his back-up is not

3. Twins' "for now" will stick with what the have but will not sign a FA catcher rather consider at some point a minor trade

4. Padres have Hedges coming off the DL at some point (not trading him)

5. Padres seem to like Lopez as a back-up being a LHH and low cost control for years (even though he is "older")

6. That should make Ellis available in a deal ... might have some appeal to a contender  as a veteran, low cost, and no long term commitment.

7. Is that the basis of a MINOR deal ... not much more than Cash / PTNL?

I think Ellis will come into play for a couple of teams. Play off experience and a capable veteran catcher. Do you think Galvis gets flipped this season as well?

I would give low odds on Galvis being dealt due to a combo of finding a contending team that needs a SS and wants Galvis over some other options that may be out there (e.g. Iglesias, Hechavarria, etc.). Add that Padres have no one to play SS if Galvis leaves this year. If they don't get a good return (they will not) no reasons to deal him.

Just to play devils advocate, they could play Urias at SS for the balance of the year to see how he does. Leaving Pirela at 2B, or maybe a final chance for Asuaje. Because if, and its a huge IF, if Urias could handle SS, Tatis could slide to 3B, and leave 2B for the remainder of Spangy, Pirela, Asuaje.

IF someone offers that illusive "compelling offer" for Galvis the Padres would make the deal and figure out patchwork SS for the remaining of 2018. COULD be Urias but COULD be Tatis if he continues to hit in AA as he has in May or COULD be just a body (e.g. Coleman, Guerra, Van Gansen) for the 2 months.

The key is getting a "compelling offer" for Galvis which I don't see. Supply of available SS potentially exceeds demand (if any). Doubt they deal him just to get him off the roster (and save maybe $2MM) to do any of the above COULD scenarios.

More likely they hold on Galvis and deal Pirela (given his bat and 2B/OF versatility might have better trade value) and then cede 2B to Urias while helping clear up the crowned OF options.

The next two months might shape the strategy with evaluating the 3B future of Villanueva and / or Spangenberg and their projection on Tatis' arrival to the ML (who they seem set on as a ML SS). If the current 3B options just fail ... the strategy COULD be to move Tatis to 3B and try to resign Galvis ... a lot of moving parts and a lot of baseball to go before those decisions.

Another catcher bites the dust .... Weiters out indefinitely (probably very long) after hamstring surgery. WASH has little in catching depth and is a contender ... so maybe a small increase in Ellis' trade value if WASH and MINN are both seeking a veteran quality catcher.

I would not trade Ellis and I'm almost certain that the Nats would set their sights higher. Lucroy, Ramos, etc.

Why would you not trade Ellis?

If we did it would be for a suitable return......which would be much more valuable than a 3rd Catcher on a 95 loss team.

I like the toughness and attitude he brings and I think he's better defensively than Raffy Lopez and handles the staff better than Lopez as well. Just my opinion.

My opinion is you just listed a bunch of reasons not to care on a non-contender and reasons for a contender to care.
