Trade Possibilities

Page 1 of 27Next

Gonna revive this thread.

Saw that Justin Turner broke his wrist yesterday (non-displaced fracture) on a HBP.  Could Preller get a call about Headley?  That would really open things up for us.  Probably won't happen, but would be nice.  Villanueva would be the starter.  Spangenburg and Asuaje would both likely be on the 25 man.  Please let it happen.

I can say that there is a 0% possibility the Pads will get a call from the Dodgers regarding Headley.  We are still 10 days from Opening Day and Turner could be out...what...4-6 weeks?  This is where depth comes in.  Forsythe will probably man 3rd and Kike/Barnes/Utley or even Peters will man 2nd.

Doubt the Dodgers will make a move on a 3B unless they are convinced Turner will be a long term issue ... and that may not be for a month or so .... or the 2nd event of injury to Forsythe and / or Utley. More likely than Headley ... they may opt for a more versatile 2B/3B such as Villanueva or Spangenberg BUT should be able to find a veteran on the cheap from a lot of other clubs as good or better.

Glad to see you followed us over Skwiggy!

I think it more likely that Asuaje is dealt in the next ten days or so.  MIL would be my guess as a likely spot.  They have uncertainty at the position and could get him as quality insurance with options left.  Playoff teams need good players in the depth pool.

Query:  Do you guys think a team, like MIL for instance, would take a shot at Tyson Ross in trade now.  Really nice upside if he is indeed returned to a semblance of his old self.  Would essentially be jumping the trade deadline market and I'd bet AJ's price is not too high right now.  Low level 50 guy maybe?

Skip Shumaker  on 1090 yesterday made it seem like this padre squad could be a lot better than we think... So I don't think Ross is going anywhere if that's the case ..except maybe extended to stay ... the days of flipping vets for prospects at the deadline are almost if not already over.. Only way I see a Veteran getting flipped this yr is 1) we suck..2) he is expiring 3) there is a younger player ready to take over at his position... So Headley..ASUAJE..Spang..Renfroe?.. Pretty much it...if #1 is true come deadline Hand + Ross + Others could also be made available....But if #1 is not and we are around .500... Don't look for much at the deadline leaving SD... I think a possibility is AJP may be busier within the 1st month of the season vs deadline..especially of Urias is ready and Lauer and Lucchesi are as well...

The entire point of flipping vets is that they won't contribute to winning a world series for the Padres and hurt the Padres with their continued success in the interim. There's no difference between the 60 loss team and the 80 loss team except the talent available to them in the draft and the talent left on the table through inactivity.

I know we are Padre focused but remember 29 other teams are trying to pare their rosters down and trying to do the same when it comes to dealing fringe players they can't (or don't want to) send to AAA. Add that after a full ST ... the 25 man rosters for the most part are rosters they are OK with going forward (at least to start the season) so unless there is a key injury ... really not looking to deal to add pieces. It happens, but this is not the normal time to see any significant deals being made ... more like a fringe player for a PTNL (or Cash Considerations). Might see that with someone like Szczur.

Now once the season starts moving along ... maybe a month or two out ... and contending teams see some real holes in their line-ups (or injuries start to mount) we then might see Preller taking more significant action. Hopefully by then his trade chips have shown well in the ML under regular season playing time (ST work is not going to really elevate any trade value). Also, by then he has a better read on the prospects that will replace those trade chips.

As for Ross ... someone would bite on him but would not expect based on some limited ST results a return of any prospect that will project out as a future key. However, if the Padres keep Ross ... and he preforms consistent with the ST hype ... a mid-season deal might yield a much better prospect while give the Padres' prospects more developmental time in the minors. Better for the Padres to take the gamble on getting a higher end prospect mid-season than a lower end prospect now considering the current system is pretty loaded anyway.

Sort of a variation of the same logic with Asuaje / Spangenberg (actually any of the others) .... no need to deal them just to get them off the team and get a marginal return now. Let 2018 play out a bit ... hopefully a market for them is found ... and deal them for something better and if not no worse off than a deal now.

So, as injuries start to take place in the ML; and suspension for Seattle, is it time for AJ to get on the phone to SEA and ship them an OF? It appears; that with the suspension of Cano, that Gordon will head back to 2B. AJ could offer Szczur, and capable player who can patrol CF but not dazzle you. Or, would AJ feel chirpy enough to offer Jank or Margot or Renfroe? Maybe a package of Szczur and Renfroe? I know that SEA doesnt have the greatest farm, but really how much would we want for the combo of Szczur and Renfroe. Even with Myers being out for awhile, it would not be awful to see a rotation of Cordero, Margot, Reyes, and Jank for the season.

While a trade of an OF is likely at some point probably not quite yet unless it is Szczur ... and he will not get them little more than a low MiL prospect (which may be fine). In a month or two things might change IF some of the Padres OF actually start to perform. Keep in mind that during the year any team adding is likely a contender and is most likely looking for someone who will perform immediately (normally a veteran). Szczur fits the profile the best but don't rule out Pirela (who may get the best return) if he gets hot since he can play both OF and 2B.

Would expect Cordero and Margot are not going anywhere since the both are young with major upside and neither is Myers (should return in June). No contender would want to give much for either Renfroe or Reyes mid-season unless they are hitting at the ML level so the Padres are better off keeping them (maybe AAA) and wait for a deal in the winter if they are to be moved (better chance they go to a non-contender). Jankowski may be more valuable to keep given he can play all three defensive position well ... is only 27 with a number of control years ... and is hitting well enough to provide CF insurance if Margot does not rebound. Other teams may  look at his previous years and discount his value (because of his past offense) to a 4th OF and not offer much. However, if he continues hit for the next month, that might change.

To me it will be Szczur (out of options) but a good bench guy for a contender or / and Pirela (makes room for Urias) with his bat / versatility.

Keep in mind that there are a number of other non-contenders who likely trying to move some OF too ... so the the buyers will have a lot of options beyond the under performing Padres OF.
