Trade Possibilities

PreviousPage 3 of 27Next

I have always thought that Ellis was destined for about 4 months in SD uniform. I do believe that he will be traded, and with the injuries in WAS and MINN, I think it will happen sooner. Depending on the "true" injury status of Hedges elbow, I think we see Lopez and Nicholas behind the plate for part of the season this year.

Speaking of trading Catchers, IF Hedges elbow is truly OK and he returns with out needing TJ surgery, how about working a trade with MIA for Realmuto. I know that SD would need to send more to MIA than just Hedges, however Realmuto doesnt want to be in MIA any longer. I am not sure of MIA situation in regards to C prospects, however Hedges will provide them with a long term, controllable catcher and Realmuto gives us a much needed bat in the lineup with not a huge drop defensively compared to Hedges. So if we send Hedges, Renfroe or Reyes, Asuaje, and 1 top level SP prospect, and 1 next tier SP, would that make the deal?

So with ANA playing well and just losing their closer to TJ surgery, do they call and inquire about Hand? They have money, but I dont know how close they are to the luxury tax limit, so Hand might fit their budget needs. Does ANA have anything in their system that SD would be interested in? Maybe something that could be flipped/used in a 3 way trade scenario with MIA to bring us Realmuto?

While I do like Ellis as a back-up (only catches about 50 games the last few years) ... at age 37 and a FA after the season his best value to the Padres (being a non-contender in 2018) is a trade chip ... not that they would get much in return but would save some salary. Lopez is not the future but is younger and could catch more games plus that gives the remainder of 2018 to see if Lopez can be the back-up next season or the Padres have to sign someone else.

Sort of the opinion of trade Ellis if some team offers something of value (maybe a DSL type prospect that Preller likes) but if no such offer keep Ellis and return Lopez to AAA when (if) Hedges returns.

============

On Realmuto considering some heavyweights would be in on trading for him given he is young, low cost, and controlled for two more years (2020) the price would be a lot higher than you suggest and include at least one of the top prospects, maybe two. For those same reasons, Miami does not need to deal him (no one cares that Realmuto is unhappy) and can wait out a big return.

Although I would like Realmuto, would not give up all that much for control only through 2020 when 2019 is not likely a contending year. Padres long term value should come from preserving that longer controlled top talent like Tatis, Urias, Morejon, Quantrill, et. al who will potentially impact 2019 through 2025-6.

side note: until the show they can hit in the ML consistently .... Hedges, Renfroe, Reyes, Asuaje have little TRADE value and certainly not for a ML regular (unless underperforming with a big contract).

LAA don't really have much to deal out of their farm ... some good prospects but almost all in A ball (so a long way out).

Maybe they better align with dealing for a Stammen. However, guessing the Padres will wait on any deal of Stammen until near the trade deadline to get the maximum bidders (and the return more aligned to the Padres' needs). Since the middle of last season Stammen has be an elite set-up man flying under the radar and should get some play.

If the LAA just need a RP body (with some ML talent ... e.g. Maton, Cimber) they do have some "non elite" prospects that may fit a Padre needs  ... defer this to the scouts .... AAA SS Fletcher (likely a back-up at the ML level but versatile contact hitter) and / or AA 3B Ward (late 1st round pick in 2015 with a decent glove and not sure about his hitting projection). Again, would they appeal to the scouts ... both hitting this year but likely that is just a hot spell. Padres need a legit back-up SS/2B near term after Tatis/Urias secure the starting role and since I see little future in either of Villanueva or Spangenberg ... adding a 3rd option would seem prudent.

Would Torrens not be an option if Hedges is done for the year?

I realize he's young but he's been here and knows a lot of the pitchers?

Canning would be a nice piece to build around from Anaheim in a deal for Hand

Why? His rights are up in 2021. If we aren't competing until 2020, that's an awfully small window.

Is he still a prospect or just too far away?

Phil Hughes obviously!

We should have all known management would be looking to spend another $13 million on a pitcher whose career they hope to resurrect. ( Brian Mitchell of course being the other)

Not sure what Hughes has left but I’m not sure this was a decent use of resources. Certainly there are pitchers at El Paso that should have deserved a shot?
