Trade ideas

PreviousPage 71 of 158Next

The Orioles have placed infielder Jonathan Villar on outright waivers after being unable to find a trade partner for the fleet-footed switch-hitter, Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com reports (via Twitter). Villar’s projected $10.4MM arbitration salaryapparently served as too substantial a roadblock to overcome when marketing him to other teams.

=================

If Baltimore couldn't find a trade partner for Villar because of the projected arbitration salary ... expect him to clear waivers and become a FA. He is young (28), switch hitter, speedy, OK hitter with poor defense.

Could he be a FA target for the Padres? 2 years on a much lower AAV could be possible if there is not a lot of competition to add a 2B from other teams. Toss in the connection with Dickerson / Kirby for 1 1/2 years (assuming they like him).

Better than the France - Garcia - Kinsler - Quiroz combo. Just enough to bridge to Edwards / Arias.

Get him!

Would love him to be our 2b until Edwards is ready!

Who are some legitimate 2b trade options AJ could be looking in to?

I really don’t think he traded Urias away without a plan in place that doesn’t include significant innings for Kinsler/Garcia at 2b.

Not sure on the supply / demand for 2B ... he was just under $5MM this season but clearly $10MM+ was not something anyone is willing to pay. Maybe a $10MM / 2 years?

Was a 4 WAR last year and close to that with MILW once before ... but also had some lesser years. Most seem to project him at about a 2 WAR ... average hitter, below average fielder but consider the current Padre alternatives he might be a good choice. At least he was productive in 2019 ... some of the other FA are more rebound candidates.

Just not sure of 2B ... that are good ... on the trade market. Everyone will say Merrifield and that is still possible although KC is insisting he is not on the market.

Baring an elite 2B ... the trade option either delivers someone not all that exciting or someone that is just OK but cost a lot. 2B is not where I want the Padres to use their trade chips / money when the better impact for contention comes at TOR or corner OF.

So Villar as a FA could have legs.

Grisham looks like an average hitter with the possibility to be a plus hitter. He will probably(almost certainly) be a better hitter than Margot. How much better is the question. His defense in CF will not be as good, but very few players in mlb would be as good. He can play any OF position, he hits both RHP and LHP equally well, and he has speed and power. He brings a lot to like. The question is will he live up to his talents? Nobody can really know yet. We will see. I am okay with this trade. I am not excited about it, but I am okay with it.

FA on the market that at least have some history and name recognition and could be a starter do provide a lot of options for teams in the market for a 2B ... useful types depending on the price.

On a 2019 WAR basis: Villar (4.0); Sogard (2.6); Schoop (1.3); Castro (1.3); Kipnis (1.1); Panic (o.2); Gennet (-0,5).

Of those ... padres should be looking for offense first the three that are "average or better" in wRC+ are: Sogard (115); Villar (107); Schoop (100).

So, if they want to upgrade the two they should be looking at are Villar and Sogard (although he is not normally considered full timer and really stunk in 2018). So maybe Villar is the best option.

Now if the Padres really want to make a splash ... spend some real coin ... Didi Gregorius is an intriguing option for 2B ... LHH ... outstanding fielder ... winning pedigree ... injured much of last season but in 2018 sported a 4.7 WAR ... still only 29. Not sure who else (except CINN) is in the market for him and that might mute his contract level somewhat. Not very likely BUT .....

I was thinking about Didi.  Heard he wants SS gig.  Who is better d wise vs Tatis? If Tatis would move and it would overall upgrade team, I'd go 3/49 for the stick and reliable D.

Gregorius is the better defensive SS .. greater range value as I recall but with the strong arm also.

Tatis has the best infield arm in baseball. He had the hardest couple of throws measured from infielders last year. He has the ability to make more spectacular plays but is not as consistent as Gregorius. However, it is all moot. Tatis will not be moving off of SS. He can play the position very well, he has worked very hard to improve his defense and most importantly he knows that SS is where the money is.

San Diego has been searching for a SS forever. We have finally found a long term answer. He worked very hard to get his defense up to plus. He has a cannon arm. He has everything we could ever ask for from a franchise player. He has finally solved our SS problem. Do we really want to turn around and  poke him in the eye after 1 year? Ask him to move to a position that will pay him $100-$200 million less on his next contract? If we do, we deserve to suck forever.
