Trade ideas

This deal is definitely centered around Urias and Grisham. I find it interesting AJP acquired TT and Grisham. Both guys were high picks with top prospect status. They floundered a bit and made some positive adjustments. AJPs Padres are about speed, defense, getting on base and TT/Grisham should bring those skills. AJP has a lot riding on his two young OFers now. I know there are mixed reviews and dealing Urias could definitely come back to sting, but I’m excited about the additions made today.

I  brought up Grisham and am happy to have him but for Urias?

They must really think he is not gonna hit.

Plus they must have another 2b in mind?

Howie Kendrick?

Sogard?

The prize was Davies in the deal and he is what cost Urias. Guessing they are not worried about 2B ... at least as a high priority. Probably more a Lauer - Grisham add as balancing in both teams' minds.

Davies fits well into the upper half of the rotation at a low ARB figure ($5MM) leaving money for other upgrades. In the big picture of building out a competitive roster ... great add.

I do like Urias' upside ... but that still comes with risk and with Edwards maybe a late 2021-2022 prospect for 2B ... fair trade-off. Note does suggest the Padres like Edwards for the future.

Luckily we have Kinsler to bridge the gap.

Everything I'm seeing says the opposite.

This was a Urias/Grisham swap with the addition of the two starters to "even it out".

Some saying adding Lauer and "taking" Davies because Grisham>Urias.

This is not just from Brewers folks either.

I hope they are right as I mentioned Grisham because i was looking at his Minor League numbers and knew he didn't have a full time spot in Mil.

Glad to have guessed right plus I think he will give us the OBP we need...even better if he is to platoon with Margot in CF and we still add another corner LH guy(Benintendi/Haniger).

I think Preller knows he has guys coming that can handle 2b after this season but only Trammell for the OF.

Lauer has more controlled years than Davies, but Davies has pretty clearly been the better pitcher. I certainly would take him over Lauer for the back end of a competitive rotation, and I'm not sure why anyone wouldn't.

Agree on Davies adding more (a lot more) for the bottom of a competitive rotation. Plus he is not "potential" he does have the proven track record and I love those AWAY stats.

Maybe just being overly optimistic on a "soft tosser" but given his ML performance ... could be a lot closer to a Kuechel than a Lauer.

Pomeranz got a big long contract for a reliever of his stature. I love that we got him. I mean, he was the best relief pitcher left on the market. It's just not where I, personally, would have spent our money.

Grisham is not really exciting but should be a decent platoon player. Not a big upgrade but at least CF is taken care of for now. Davies worries me on the other hand. He has some of the worst pure stuff in mlb. If you look him up on brooksbaseball.net, you will see that every single pitch he throws is "basically never swung at and missed". Yes he has performed. I just hope he can keep it up. I will love it if he turns into Greg Maddux, I just don't know if I would bet on it. I hope AJ and his scouts see something that I don't. I am not excited about Davies, but I am willing to wait and see how he performs.

I was expecting these kinds of minor moves. I am just a little worried about the market. I think Urias will be a plus major league player. He and Lauer were two of our better trade pieces. I was hoping we would walk away with more of a return for the two of them.

Davies has never been a stuff guy. He relies on his smarts and movement. I think you are underestimating Grisham a bit. The guy can do it all and most importantly he’s a patient hitter who knows how to get on base. Jason, I know you were a big Urias guy so I understand being underwhelmed by this deal, but I think you will come around when you see Grisham and Davies contributions next year. For the last few years I was certain Urias and Tatis were the future of this franchise so it does feel weird to see Urias shipped out of town. I was kind of expecting it from things going around this year about Urias, but it still feels strange to see him shipped.

I agree on Grisham, seems like a good add, even though it cost us Urias. I think we got what might turn into a very high level/not great LHH RFer. And I think Davies will do very well with being in Petco, and what IMO is a much better defensive INF in SD versus the infield that played behind him in MIL.

He (Grisham) played at a 3 WAR projection (Season) pace at the MLB level-- BR projects him to be even better in 2020 .779 OPS offensively so a 4+ WAR is a HUGE upgrade at CF.. Even if he platoons with Margot (Grisham actually hits lefties ok) We should still be much better with this add

I think Keuchel is a great comp

Davies 2019 10-7 3,55  2.8 WAR ----Career 614.1 IP  43-32 .573 winning %  3.91 ERA

Keuchel 2019 8-8 3.75 2.0 WAR----- Career 1302 IP 84-71 .542 winning % (on a much better team) 3.67 ERA

Keuchel is worth $12 mil +... Davies at $5 mil (proj) is a steal

I hope Urias does great-- and Grisham does great tbh... I can see why this trade was made 2B is a position of strength in the pipeline-- I mean we have Miller/Edwards/CJ and also Arias who would move Tatis Jr to 2B with his superior SS Defense...  and I would wager that 2 or 3 of those guys will be > Urias in time-- so it wasnt so much a question of IF but of WHEN Urias was going to be moved.. We all know how difficult finding good hitting CFers is, especially from the left side so when you can get one, especially MLB ready now, you have to pull the trigger if your not strong in that area.. I like this trade a lot

Doesn't matter to us but I guess Urias will be the Brewers everyday SS.

He's not taking Hiuras spot at 2b.

Jason i think you're undervaluing Grisham some.

I don't think AJ makes this trade giving up Urias if he expects Grisham to just be a "decent  platoon player."

While his numbers last year in the minors were inflated by the PCL he still got on base at a .371 clip in AA.

With 54 xbh's between AA and AAA I'm hoping for alot more than decent platoon player from him.

He certainly will hit for more power than Urias and as was said....I'm sure AJ feels alot better about our near future 2b prospects than he does our LH hitting outfielders.

Now....do we still get another LH hitting outfielder or do we play Myers and Renfroe everyday with Grisham/Margot manning CF?

I notice the Padres are taking some heat for the Pomeranz deal and fans aren’t excited about Davies, but this could be a sign that AJP feels the FA market for starters is too crazy. Getting Davies a 2.5 WAR pitcher at 5 mill and Pomeranz the top reliever left on the board at 8.5 a year  might just be the more prudent route if the FA market goes wild. I like the Keuchel/Davies comp and if Keuchel gets 10-14mill a year in FA it makes the Davies acquisition look even better. Say Wheeler gets 5 or 6 years at 100-125 mill and Ryu gets 3 or 4 years at 18 mill plus... it makes AJP look pretty smart grabbing a top reliever and Davies at 13.5 mill a year. I still expect a big 3 for 1 or 4 for 1 deal here soon where the Padres deal some silver pieces for a gold.
