Quote from Brian Connelly on October 6, 2019, 1:04 pmQuote from Commie on October 5, 2019, 5:13 pmThis should be a fun off season starting pretty quick after WS. Manager will probably be announced then plus a flurry of minor roster adjustment deals by many teams including SD. We (really you guys I've been MIA) have been batting about the same Dickerson-Benetendi-Marte stuff for a while.
How about some guys who shouldn't be available, but probably are? How about Lamet, Morejon, Edwards and Myers for Harper. If he'll waive no trade I bet that gets it done. There's your LH CORF. I'm only 10% tongue in cheek on this.
Any others come to mind? Scherzer?
I thought early in year Scherzer was a possibility, but after 2019 season he now has 10/5 rights; essentially full no-trade.
The truly bonkers idea I've had is also a no-trade fantasy only : Gore, Trammell, Margot, Myers (full contract), Luis Torrens, Michel Baez, and Abrams or X Edwards for... yes, Mike Trout.
The Angels seem stuck in high payroll purgatory limiting their ability to compete, & their Farm system beyond Jo Adell (who looks overrated: 60 power with 0 HR in 120 PCL AB?) is bad; no other top 100, only 4 guys with "50" grades...
Trout seems to better fit where the Pads are at: in his prime WITH other guys, with youth & talent coming up; then the Angels: aging vets, no Farm. Major reset now for a bright future with potential ace & CF of future who of course will never live up to Trout; but clearing out $ commitments with room to add & now a legit (prob top 10) Farm. In a much better position to flip
Pads real pain is losing potential LH Ace & committing massive $ to position player side: BUT only +$16 MM net next 3 years Trout minus Myers. Then Hosmer salary drops or disappears. Pads ownership would have to go to 150 MM with Trout on team.
Go for it now trying to bludgeon teams to death with: Tatis, Trout, Machado, Hosmer (Renfroe), Renfroe (Hosmer), Naylor or Cordero, Mejia, Urias

Quote from JasonE135 on October 6, 2019, 1:11 pmDickerson had a higher BA than any of those guys and we don't have to give up any prospects to get him. I don't think any of those guys give us enough of an added benefit over Dickerson for us to give up prospects for them. Maybe Merrifield, but he was considered a God last year and I am sure would cost a fortune. Several teams have tried to trade for him and Marte and found the cost to be too prohibitive to make any deal.

Agree that Dickerson is looking more and more as the sensible target for the Padres to upgrade a corner OF slot with a player that can hit RHP and LHP.
Now being greedy ... the Dickerson add would be better if they upgraded another OF slot. If only money gets Dickerson ... the a lot of prospect talent to maybe lure either Marte or Merrifield ... either could handle CF.
Time changes teams' positions on players ... Pitt and KC had miserable seasons and axed their managers. If both are rebuilding ... adding prospects for the future may now look better than keeping Marte (2 years at about $12MM per) or Merrifield (3 years ... age 31-32-33) while they are losing vs picking up a slew prospect that fit their future vision. Padres have a lot to offer.
If I were Preller, I am making the calls and putting in play ML and prospect player going high quality volume without including the high ceiling elite ... if the bite great, if they don't move on.

Quote from fenn68 on October 6, 2019, 2:16 pmSaw a couple of bits on MLBTradeRumors by their moderators ... each had some interesting narrator ideas considering potential Padre moves:
First, consider trading Yates while his value is high a (2019 relief pitcher of the year) but only one control year and in his early 30s. Target return should be a near term / high ceiling prospect similar to a Trammell type. Guess that guy is not high on the Padres in the playoffs in 2020.
Second, the opinion that Detroit should be the type of team that would take Myers (and his contract) if he came with a bundle of quality prospects. Detroit has a truly terrible team and a weak farm system ... but are well financed with only two real pricy contracts ... Miguel Cabrera (goes on forever) and Zimmerman whose $25MM ends after 2020. After that not sure they will have anyone much over league minimum. Fair chance that in 2021 with Cabrera and Myers they would still have one of the lowest payrolls in MLB yet financially secure. Makes some sense.
Opinions from the outer limits.

Quote from JasonE135 on October 6, 2019, 2:26 pmThat is a great idea and I am sure that is exactly AJ's plan. I am sure he will check with every team that might have a possibly available outfielder that he might want. He will find out who is available and who isn't and what the prices will be. I am sure he does that year round so he already has some idea. Then he will go after whoever he wants most and make an offer. He might make several different offers on several different outfielders and see who bites. After a while he will know what it will take to get each one. We will be competing with other teams though so it will take a while. Teams will take our offer to every other team interested and tell them "This is what you have to beat." Same for Dickerson. He will get several offers from several different team and we will have to see who wants him most.

I was just coming on here to mention that chat. I guess the return from DET would be unimportant compared to losing Myers all or most of Myers salary.
Myers, Luchessi, Urias, Patino, Baez, and Naylor for either Riley Greene or Parker Meadows?
Then sign Cole, Dickerson, and Gregorius. Cole takes the top of the rotation spot and Gregorius plays SS with Tatis sliding to 2B, and Dickerson takes over LF. Then you can get Inciarte or Eaton to platoon in CG with Margot, and then we can hope that Cordero can stay healthy and platoon in RF with Renfroe.

Quote from TatisJr on October 6, 2019, 3:04 pmJoey, Urias, Patino, Baez and Naylor just to get rid of Myers? That’s insane! AJP isn’t going to get rid of all that young talent to just shed Myers contract. I don’t think the Padres acquisitions will come via FA even if they ship Myers out. I’d love Cole, but I don’t see ownership ponying up the kind of cash and commitment for a third year in a row.

The only two in that five that have real talent are Urias and Patino. Baez and Naylor are fringe talents, and Luchessi is a 4 or 5 guy or possibly long relief guy. If SD can ship Myers out for no money going out to Det as well, then Cole is only $10-13M a year over Myers salary. I think Fowler signs off on that deal for Cole in a heartbeat. Cole will be better than Patino, and Gregorius is LH bat compared to Urias yet unproven RH bat.

Other GMs would LOVE you!!! They would think the old fire sale days had returned to San Diego! So Cole would be an additional $13 million, plus how much for Gregorius? We get it; you don't like Urias, you don't care about Patino and you really, really, really, really, really, really, really want Cole and Gregorius! I'm sure AJ has a different opinion. All of those guys have value. A lot of people want Baez. AL teams want Naylor. AJ would be fired on the spot if he made that trade.

Actually, I do like Urias a lot. And I think that Patino has a tremendous amount of tatlent. But you have to give up a lot if you want get rid of Myers contract. Preller would not be fired on the spot for making that trade. If fact, I think you will agree that Prellers job is on the line after 2020 if SD doesnt turn things around from Fowlers comments. So something has to change. This comment thread started with the question, what would you do for DET to take ALL of Myers contract. So J135, what do you think DET would require to take on all $68.5M of Myers contract?
