Quote from fenn68 on November 27, 2019, 11:33 amQuote from TatisJr on November 27, 2019, 11:26 amI believe the rule for next year is 13 P, 13 position players for the 26 man rosters. Can Java Guerra be carried as a position player and used mostly as relief pitcher?
Don't think they have made that clear yet for "2 way players" but the 13/13 split is right.
Guessing the league would have some serious pushback on labeling a player a position player and using that player extensively as a pitcher since part of that 13/13 split logic was to eliminated more RP that are stretching out the games.
Probably pitchers will be able to play the field (usually PH/PR) but not the other way around ... e.g. Kinsler will not be pitching the 18th inning unless their are some exceptions for extra inning games.

Quote from fenn68 on November 27, 2019, 11:38 amQuote from Henry Silvestre on November 27, 2019, 11:31 amwith Davies/Pomz IN.... we have the luxury of using Strahm/Baez/Morejon/Q/Bolanos/Lucchesi/Lamet/Castillo/Yates -- not to mention other specs Weathers/Cantillo/Nix/Lawson/Thompson as Chips to acquire a STAR type OF'er (Bryant especially if 2 yrs of control) or a smaller solid player like Comforto or Benintendi.... this deal today just made some "other" moves more likely as Franchy and/or Naylor or both are all of the sudden available... Ditto the SP/BP arms above-- not saying we trade them all, but a couple from each list doable without feeling it ...
Agree that Preller has a lot more flexibility with his trade chips. With adding control over: Davies (2 years), Pomeranz (4 years), and Grisham (6 years) ... he can move either short term or longer term assets.
Clearly more to come.

Since Pomeranz is "pending a physical" ... Preller has a window to execute another deal in which he drops a 40 man roster player (or 2).
If that does not happen probably a pitcher from Margevicius, Avila, Wingenter, Diaz.

It’s turning into a barn-burner of a day for the San Diego organization, as the Friars have already struck a four-player swap with the Brewers.
======
Appears Pomeranz hit his stride last season as a LHRP (which is what I expect his role to be).
Padres really only have Strahm and Castillo are legit LHRP ... so fits.
Needs an offsetting 40 man roster move.
11:55am: Pomeranz is expected to receive a three-year guarantee, per ESPN.com’s Jeff Passan (via Twitter).
Now that is an aggressive signing even without knowing the dollars. LHRP is set-up with Strahm - Castillo - Pomeranz and COULD be the best LHRP set in MLB.
Dennis LinDrew Pomeranz is receiving a four-year deal, sources tell The Athletic.====If I thought 3 years was aggressive .... 4 YEARS!!!!!!!1:20pm: Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports that Pomeranz has been promised a rather stunning four-year guarantee (Twitter link). Robert Murray adds that it’ll pay him $8-9MM annually.
=====
Woof! that is some big money for 4 years .... is Pomeranz potential closer material?
Either way with him getting $8-9MM and Davies getting about $5MM .... if the Padres are going to add any other upgrades that come with a decent salary they are going to have to start pairing some of the other larger contracts (see Myers - Yates - Renfroe - Hedges).

Quote from TatisJr on November 27, 2019, 11:53 amPomeranz really scored. 4 years is a lot for half year of dominance as a reliever. This is definitely a gamble by AJP, but I do feel really good about the BP now.

Quote from Randy Manese on November 27, 2019, 12:17 pmOverpaid for Pomeranz, but he was in great demand after Smith signed with Atlanta. RP getting this kind of money this year and probably in the future, so he could be traded down the line if we really run into a salary crunch. Lots of arms coming up in the system and some undoubtedly will be moved to the bullpen vice SP.
Urias will prosper as a hitter in Milwaukee compared to the bigger dimensions of Petco, but I had doubts about his range and arm strength as a full-time ss. Gabriel Arias and several others in the system (including Javier Guerra in a pinch) are better defensively.
Good luck to Lauer in Milwaukee. Great team guy but will be challenged in the smaller park.

They must really think he is not gonna hit.
Plus they must have another 2b in mind?
Howie Kendrick?
Sogard?
The prize was Davies in the deal and he is what cost Urias. Guessing they are not worried about 2B ... at least as a high priority. Probably more a Lauer - Grisham add as balancing in both teams' minds.
Davies fits well into the upper half of the rotation at a low ARB figure ($5MM) leaving money for other upgrades. In the big picture of building out a competitive roster ... great add.
I do like Urias' upside ... but that still comes with risk and with Edwards maybe a late 2021-2022 prospect for 2B ... fair trade-off. Note does suggest the Padres like Edwards for the future.
Luckily we have Kinsler to bridge the gap.
Everything I'm seeing says the opposite.
This was a Urias/Grisham swap with the addition of the two starters to "even it out".
Some saying adding Lauer and "taking" Davies because Grisham>Urias.
This is not just from Brewers folks either.
I hope they are right as I mentioned Grisham because i was looking at his Minor League numbers and knew he didn't have a full time spot in Mil.
Glad to have guessed right plus I think he will give us the OBP we need...even better if he is to platoon with Margot in CF and we still add another corner LH guy(Benintendi/Haniger).
I think Preller knows he has guys coming that can handle 2b after this season but only Trammell for the OF.

Lauer has more controlled years than Davies, but Davies has pretty clearly been the better pitcher. I certainly would take him over Lauer for the back end of a competitive rotation, and I'm not sure why anyone wouldn't.

Quote from fenn68 on November 27, 2019, 12:28 pmListening to D.Smith per his sources (and they are normally good) ... IF the season started today, Ty France would be the starting 2B. However, the Padres will apparently pursue an upgrade for 2B.
Other than Merrifield (who is not on the market) not sure who will be a significant upgrade and a reasonable price if even available. Might get a different body but ???
Still at his point ... 2B at the bottom of the upgrade list well behind TOR and corner OF where at least the may get a game changer player.
