Trade ideas

PreviousPage 68 of 158Next

I was initially surprised by this trade, but I think I'm liking it more and more. I loved Urias and am sad to see him go, but Grisham has some solid upside in the OF and had a breakout year last season at age 23. Former first rounder with athleticism and a solid glove... I think that's a good pickup for us. And Zach Davies, while unexciting, has a career ERA+ of 110, a 2019 ERA+ of 125, and has a career road ERA of 3.04. Dude didn't enjoy pitching in Milwaukee but did really well everywhere else. Move that into Petco and you could have a very nice 4/5 pitcher. It's certainly an upgrade over Lauer and probably an upgrade over Airmail Luchessi.

I have no real opinion on Pomz. I'd prefer not dumping 3/21 on the guy (as Dennis Lin has implied) but we're dealing with entirely different salary parameters now than we're used to dealing with here in SD. 7/year for a reliever feels like a lot, but in context with a payroll that could hit 150 next year it really isn't that much.

As I mentioned earlier, I have a feeling that the Pom signing could lead to a trade of Yates for either the 2B or an additional COF.

How about Yates and Margot for Conforto and Diaz ( who was not to popular in NYM land last year)?

Not enough for Conforto especially since no one knows if Cordero can hit in the ML (or can stay healthy). However with some other pieces in play maybe but without the METS getting a slam dunk 2020 ML CF ... don't see it.

I will toss in two other gambits .... since ATL has made some strong moves (and potentially going for more) .... WASH and PHIL may feel the need to start a counter set of moves. They both have money. Make a play using Yates to get them to take Myers ... Padres save a lot of payroll space to use on that TOR arm.

WASH is losing Zimmerman to FA (was paid big dollars) and likely to lose one of Strasburg or Rendon (big dollars) .. so money will be there and Myers has a home at 1B. NATS get their closer. Should have the money (and be willing to take the risk on a Yates extension)

PHIL can set-up a domino effect .... Myers to LF ... McCutcheon to CF ... Kingery to 3B (big hole for them) and PHIL gets their closer. Same as WASH on extension potential.

Padres use the money to sign Ryu .... frees up Lucchesi as a trade chip to add to the OF.

So CF is now covered. The rotation seems full. The pen looks sound.

Big hole at 2nd but I'm thinking Edwards is up after the break.

We still need to sort out the C question: can we survive with Hedges hitting below the Mendoza line or do we go for Mejia's bat? I'm happy with Torrens or Allen as back up.

Myers and Renfroe still in the corners....I guess that's the next question answered( or of course the C question)?

Still need a TOR... Ryu or Wheeler in FA... Kubler? or Price? via trade

Still need a COF with the ability to kill RHP Bryant? Benintendi?

Do we need a 2B? It wouldnt hurt

Do we need a BIG Offense/D C upgrade (like Contreras or Sanchez) or do we ride with Hedges + Mejia

BP appears set.. Bench could still use some upgrades

I know the Padres can use Machado as the emergency SS if Tatis goes down (or just needs a rest) .... but never like moving a cornerstone player around the field ... just sit him at 3B and don't mess with him.

However, the odds of Tatis playing 162 games at SS is probably remote given his all out style. So should the Padres be looking to add a reserve INF capable of handling SS defensively ... at least on a short term basis?

Miller should be in AAA and maybe fills that role mid-season. Do they just "gamble" with Tatis being healthy and not needing rest .. use Garcia (or Quiroz) for short spells .... then in the second half (if needed) call up Miller. Maybe by mid-season Arias has done enough in AA to warrant consideration?

Got to look closer at the 40 man Big Boy... Javy "freaking" Guerra -- BP/backup SS..

The Padres have struck a deal with free agent lefty Drew Pomeranz, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (via Twitter). It’s turning into a barn-burner of a day for the San Diego organization, as the Friars have already struck a four-player swap with the Brewers.

======

Appears Pomeranz hit his stride last season as a LHRP (which is what I expect his role to be).

Padres really only have Strahm and Castillo are legit LHRP ... so fits.

Needs an offsetting 40 man roster move.

11:55am: Pomeranz is expected to receive a three-year guarantee, per ESPN.com’s Jeff Passan (via Twitter).

Now that is an aggressive signing even without knowing the dollars. LHRP is set-up with Strahm - Castillo - Pomeranz and COULD be the best LHRP set in MLB.

Dennis Lin
Drew Pomeranz is receiving a four-year deal, sources tell The Athletic.

If I thought 3 years was aggressive .... 4 YEARS!!!!!!!

I believe the rule for next year is 13 P, 13 position players for the 26 man rosters. Can Javy Guerra be carried as a position player and used mostly as relief pitcher?

I had him penciled in as the closer replacing Yates 🙂 Guerra at SS would be in case of extreme emergency given his bat.

with Davies/Pomz IN.... we have the luxury of using Strahm/Baez/Morejon/Q/Bolanos/Lucchesi/Lamet/Castillo/Yates -- not to mention other specs Weathers/Cantillo/Nix/Lawson/Thompson as Chips to acquire a STAR type OF'er (Bryant especially if 2 yrs of control) or a smaller solid player like Comforto or Benintendi.... this deal today just made some "other" moves more likely as Franchy and/or Naylor or both are all of the sudden available... Ditto the SP/BP arms above-- not saying we trade them all, but a couple from each list doable without feeling it ...
