Quote from JasonE135 on November 9, 2019, 4:40 pmThe team has been thinking about dealing Hedges if they get a good deal. They would not be doing that if they just had to replace him. There would be no point. So obviously the Padres management disagrees with you.

"They would not be doing that if they just had to replace him."
The point isn't to tread water and "replace." It is to improve. Chirinos or other could do that to the overall situation at C.

Quote from JasonE135 on November 9, 2019, 5:36 pmI think they are looking at Mejia as their future catcher. For a team that has Hedges, Mejia, Allen and Torrens available NOW, and also has Campusano for the future, to trade for a catcher is just folly. You may like Chirinos but he is just not needed. We only need 1 catcher and we have several.

It's pretty accepted now that two catchers are needed who can go at least thirds split one way or another.
I do like Chirinos. He is not needed, true. Tucker Barnhardt would do. Maybe even Jason Castro. Don't want juicers Grandal or the guy from LA and TOR. Gomes?

Quote from Henry Silvestre on November 9, 2019, 6:00 pmThis one is really off LF... Sanchez (NYY) has had problems and critics and pressure in NY -- still has put up some very good numbers for a C, and seems to me like in SD away from the AL East and all that NYY pressure he EXPLODES into the best all around C in the game... take it a step further and NYY have a huge BAT (Stanton) who missed most of 2019 but destroys LHP AND RHP and maybe the most overlook player atm because of his contract.. But in 2020 he is due to make $26 mil (+$6 mil vs Myers).. so what would a BLOCKBUSTER trade with NYY look like??
I'll try NYY send Sanchez C + Stanton RF (total $$ for 2020 ($27mil) + (3 fringy 40 man roster guys so as to absorb 8 vs 5.. net 3 40 man roster spots)
SDP send Myers + Kinsler (Didi gone need a cheap backup IF) + Hedges (immediately makes NYY P better + NAylor OF/1B/DH (EE gone) + Lucchesi (New Yorker comes home and instantely improves NYY #4 or #5 slot) + Arias + Bolanos + Torrens (was one of their top C prospects along with Sanchez at one point he is close to MLB ready now) + Quantrill and Morejon... Package hurts a bit, but makes NYY deepeer than even 2019 and gives them 2 additional arms that are borderline MLB ready and have stuff that can play up in their elite BP and can be serious SP considerations down the line..
Net payroll added $0 for both sides roughly
- Tatis Jr SS
- Machado 3B
- Stanton RF
- Sanchez C
- Hosmer 1B (moves to 7th vs LHP)
- Renfroe LF (moves to 4th vs RHP)
- Urias 2B
- Pitcher
- Margot CF (Moves to 6th vs LHP)
What a great start to 2020... Still have $$ to go get Stras... can still bring in a better option vs RHP for CF or RF... and now have Mejia as a viable platoon for LF with Renfroe and a backup C seeing action 40/60 while continuing to harnest his defensive capabilities behind the plate.. Sanchez "breaks out in SDP" with the kick back lifestyle and surrounded by many more latin dudes...

Quote from BoosterSD on November 9, 2019, 10:46 pmA proposed trade, read on MLBTR, via Dennis Lin and Jamey Newberg between SD and TEX. TEX gets Luchessi and Blake Hunt, and SD gets Mazara and Jonathon Hernandez.

Quote from JasonE135 on November 9, 2019, 11:55 pmNot a very exciting trade. I guess it would be okay except that I was hoping for a more solid addition to our outfield. Mazara would at least be a decent platoon option, and he hits 21HRs every year. Hernandez is just a young, high velocity bullpen flyer. So he is basically equal to Hunt. The trade is pretty even. I guess we might as well. It does help both teams.

Quote from fenn68 on November 10, 2019, 4:03 amNot sure how Preller (or any GM) handles this but if they want to upgrade ... in the Padres case OF ... they still want to get the most back for their excess OF while paying the least for the upgrades ... while still actually having a quality OF.
Do you move your current OF first ... probably maximizing the return but creating an OF hole that the other teams / FA see which may in turn push the price up for the replacement? Or
Do you get your OF upgrades first ... but creating a bigger long jam in the OF and maybe putting other teams in a position to low ball on offers for the excess needed to be shed (payroll being an issue).
Since other teams and FA are not just going to sit around and wait for the Padres to make their moves ... has to be some strategic logic by Preller as to sequence and timing to net the max value net in the combination of moves.

Quote from MrPadre19 on November 10, 2019, 4:47 amWith the injury history/innings limits for Paddack/Richards/Lamet I’m not sure why everyone is so agreeable to trade Lucchesi.
To be honest he’s our most consistent and reliable starter going into next season.
Id prefer to deal Lauer even if it means adding another prospect.
It just seems most here are undervaluing Joey.

Quote from fenn68 on November 10, 2019, 7:15 amI part agree that most are undervaluing Lucchesi with the extensive need of SP (even bottom of the rotation arms that actually pitch) but this, for me, is a case where the Padres have to give up something good to get something good at a position of need. At least when it comes to SP the Padres have quiet a few alternatives with higher ceiling.
So if 4 years of control ... cheap control ... of a 1.6 WAR pitcher has to be used to get someone like Conforto would do it. Sure would like to sub Lauer ... but the Mets have something to say about that ... and that would probably be no.
So not WANTING to trade Lucchesi but WILLING to trade him for the better return.
