The point isn't to tread water and "replace." It is to improve. Chirinos or other could do that to the overall situation at C.

It's pretty accepted now that two catchers are needed who can go at least thirds split one way or another.

I do like Chirinos. He is not needed, true. Tucker Barnhardt would do. Maybe even Jason Castro. Don't want juicers Grandal or the guy from LA and TOR. Gomes?

SDP send Myers + Kinsler (Didi gone need a cheap backup IF) + Hedges (immediately makes NYY P better + NAylor OF/1B/DH (EE gone) +  Lucchesi (New Yorker comes home and instantely improves NYY #4 or #5 slot) + Arias + Bolanos + Torrens (was one of their top C prospects along with Sanchez at one point he is close to MLB ready now) + Quantrill and Morejon... Package hurts a bit, but makes NYY deepeer than even 2019 and gives them 2 additional arms that are borderline MLB ready and have stuff that can play up in their elite BP and can be serious SP considerations down the line..

Net payroll added $0 for both sides roughly

 

1. Tatis Jr SS
2. Machado 3B
3. Stanton RF
4. Sanchez C
5. Hosmer 1B (moves to 7th vs LHP)
6. Renfroe LF (moves to 4th vs RHP)
7. Urias 2B
8. Pitcher
9. Margot CF (Moves to 6th vs LHP)

 

What a great start to 2020... Still have $$ to go get Stras... can still bring in a better option vs RHP for CF or RF... and now have Mejia as a viable platoon for LF with Renfroe and a backup C seeing action 40/60 while continuing to harnest his defensive capabilities behind the plate.. Sanchez "breaks out in SDP" with the kick back lifestyle and surrounded by many more latin dudes...

Do you get your OF upgrades first ... but creating a bigger long jam in the OF and maybe putting other teams in a position to low ball on offers for the excess needed to be shed (payroll being an issue).

Since other teams and FA are not just going to sit around and wait for the Padres to make their moves ... has to be some strategic logic by Preller as to sequence and timing to net the max value net in the combination of moves.

At least when it comes to SP the Padres have quiet a few alternatives with higher ceiling.

So if 4 years of control ... cheap control ... of a 1.6 WAR pitcher has to be used to get someone like Conforto would do it. Sure would like to sub Lauer ... but the Mets have something to say about that ... and that would probably be no.

So not WANTING to trade Lucchesi but WILLING to trade him for the better return.
