Quote from Randy Manese on October 31, 2019, 9:41 amConcur! Preller's neck is on the line for 2020 and if the team fails to be competitive enough for a play0ff spot this year, then he's gone and probably so is Tingler. Deal from organizational strength and depth to get steady, realiable consistent professional hitters who can make it easier for Machado, Tatis, Hosmer, Mejia, and Renfroe to move runners along. Unfortunately, don't see a whole lot of upside in Free Agency on the hitting side, but some could have another good year left to do what oldsters Kendrick, Zimmerman, etc. did for the Nats in 2019. In the not so long term (late 2020 to 2021) probably see Trammell and Abrams come forward to claim OF spots - both are left-hand hitters - and more complete hitters than anyone we have currently playing the OF. So my suggestion is patch up the offense with modest FA additions in 2020 (unless we can trade for a stable star), hoping that Urias, Naylor and Cordero also come through, and focus on getting that one ace who can lead a young but very talented pitching staff headed by Gore and Paddack and supported by Lamet, Lucchesi and Richards. Gore won't be in Amarillo long and will be brought up just like Paddack was from AA to the majors.

Quote from MrPadre19 on October 31, 2019, 9:47 amI agree improvements need to be seen in 2020 but I'm not sure its "playoffs or bust" for Preller or Tingler.
But getting close to .500 certainly needs to be the goal.
Last years first half(along with Tatis injury) IMO gave Preller the benefit of the doubt for the second half decline.
But this year we need to be competitive for the entirety of the season.

Quote from BoosterSD on October 31, 2019, 9:49 amI think that you could look at Price as an improvement over Laur, and then getting rid of Myers. So dont you think that would be a win for SD in pitching performance and a win for BOS in payroll. And isnt that what you want in a trade, a win/win?

Quote from MrPadre19 on October 31, 2019, 10:50 amYes.but is the increase from Lauer to Price worth the extra we're paying for Price?
We are losing Myers and his contract but gaining Price and his.
At that rate we could keep Myers and add a $13 mil player for the same cost.
I'm all for moving Myers....but we need to either "save" money or gain an obvious increase in production.
I don't think Price is enough to move Myers for and "add" payroll.

Tend to agree with that logic that the “extra” payroll for Price might be used more beneficially elsewhere .... especially if we think Paddack, Lamet, Richards, Lucchesi, and Lauer are the incumbents to be bumped and internally in 2020 we have Quantrill, Gore, and Patino to do the bumping. Adding Price would in turn just require Preller to pursue before 2021 trading out some of the internal prospects who are younger, on the upside to higher potential while Price is on the downside ... plus they are way cheaper saving money to deploy on hitters.
A bit of a roll the dice but a “good” season in 2020 out of Myers will make him a better trade candidate next winter (then only $41MM/2 years) and if not ... no real change from current value. Of course, NOT making the Price deal does not preclude a different deal to move Myers and actually reducing payroll a bit even after eating salary.
Since Preller probably does not care at this point which of the OF gets moved to make way for a more productive OF .... might make Renfroe the real trade chip ... lower salary, control, good defense, and power may not be enough for a team needing more offense but might appeal to a team that already has a good offense but a corner OF hole.
Not spending extra to get a Price and saving some payroll on Renfroe could give them a path to Dickerson as a FA and maybe Akiyama.

Quote from fenn68 on October 31, 2019, 11:34 amI too don’t think it is 2020 or bust for Preller / Tingler. 2021 may be more critical to have moved above the .500 mark and in contention. Right now too may holes to fill with adds TBD and improvements for the prospects to think that will all come together for a 2020 playoff run (possible but not something to expect).
After 2021 Preller / Tingler only have one more year under contract so if the team shows no progression probably game over but if enough to contend (even if not the wild card) probably gets 2022 before the natural decision as their contracts expire. Not sure how the 2022 MLB strike (potentially with CBA expiration) may impact when (if) either get axed. Add to that a good change Fowler steps back as the lead owner for baseball operations after the new CBA which he will be a key negotiator.
Maybe they make no moves until the new lead owner (or new non-owner head of baseball operations) is in place so he can make his own call.
A lot what seem like side issues can get in the way ... so if the team is not progressing and needs rework ... why not just wait until the new rules are set and the new Padres’ top management is settled. Been losing for a decade .. what is another year.

He’s got some clear needs on the ML roster and tons of prospect capital to use in trades. Ownership and AJP himself have stated 2020 is a big year for the franchise. I don’t think ownership handed out franchise record contracts to Manny and Hosmer to just wait until Patino and Gore are ready in 2022. Let’s look at LHSP for example. You have two established young starters in Joey and Lauer. Then you have untouchable Gore with Cantillo, Morejon, Weathers in a the minors. Amongst Lauer, Joey, Weathers, Morejon and Cantillo I could see 2 being moved this offseason for upgrades to the ML roster. Then look at the organizational depth in the middle INF and C. Those are areas of strength where AJP can use in trade to fill needs.
I agree with your premise but Gore will be in S.D. in 2020 unless he has some sort of setback and most definitely in the Opening Day rotation in 2021.......along with Patino.
Not going to have to wait until 2022 on these two.
And while I love having such a deep Farm system now is the time to trade some for major league talent.
Both because we are "ready to contend" and because we will have issues making room for all on the 40 man roster after this season anyway.
The roster will start to become an issue and trading multiple prospects for major league ready talent is a better situation than
possibly losing some for nothing.
I agree Preller has certain "untouchables"....but i don't think it goes very far passed Gore/Patino/Edwards/Abrams.
IMO Morejon is available.
I agree with your timeline on both Gore- 2020 and Patino 2021. I wasn’t clear with my 2022 comment. What I meant is that is the year I think The Young Guns (Gore, Paddack and Patino) will all be off of their inning restrictions and be going full throttle. I want/expect them to be cautious with those two in 2020-2021 like they were with Paddack.

Only way I trade Lauer + Myers ++ etc for Price is if Benintendi is on the deal .. A lefty stick with 3-4 WAR + refular WAR type game.. I would justify the extra $12.5 mil per by adding Beni .. (Roughly what it would cost us net to add a FA OF like Dickerson or Puig) who are similar to Beni... Price obviously is an injury risk but as a 5th SP (replacing Lauer) really a ++ for the Pads.. But no Beni no Price
