Ismael Mena for Kubler straight up would be the equivalent of Tatis Jr for Shields... When it happen... Mena is our J2 signing SS from this yr.. And yes he is higher ranked than Tatis Jr was when we got him... So your telling me we shouldn't trade Mena for Kubler straight up? I do that 10 out of 10 times

I guess nobody bothered to read what I was saying. Yes prospects are more valuable than ever, but teams with assets to trade are not willing to change their ask. Everybody still wants multiple top prospects for any player of true value. You can hope for a major trade including only lesser prospects. I just don't see it happening. I guess we will see what happens by the start of next year. And btw, Ismael Mena is the only OF prospect in our system with truly high upside. It is possible he turns into an OF version of Tatis. What I am saying is that there is no way that Pittsburgh will make that trade. Ismael Mena is far and away one of our most valuable assets outside of our big 6 or 7. But people will expect to get him as a throw in as part of a trade. Nobody outside of us will see him as the major piece. I personally wouldn't trade him for Kluber. As I said, he could be Tatis.

I read and understood your every word. I just don’t think you are correct. You say the Padres will need to deal a top 5 prospect to get a deal done and that I’m just hoping for a deal to be made with “lesser” prospects. Yet you have Mena as 8-10 prospect in Padres system and say you wouldn’t deal him for Kluber.  I have Arias high on my list. I’m sure Pitt and other teams scouting and player development teams have different rankings for the Padres farm. Maybe they have Mena or Arias as top 7 guys? We don’t know. My point is a collective package of say the Padres 14, 18, 25 prospects may have more value to certain teams than the Red Sox number 4 and 6 prospects. You seem to think if players don’t fall in the media’s list of top Padres prospects they don’t have value. The fact is we just don’t know what Texas or Pitts teams think of a guy like Lawsons Fall league performance. Some might think it’s a flash in the pan. Others might see a guy who if healthy and in their system might be a number 2 or 3 starter. Notice when people talk about the Pads system, they usually mention the DEPTH of the farm. It isn’t just top heavy in talent. People love what AJP has built. He has plenty of chips to work with in trades.

I am fully aware of the tremendous worth of our prospects. Even the lower level ones. We were talking about a Marte trade. First off, Marte has far more value than Shields did when we traded him. Also, Pittsburgh is still trying to convince their fan base that they are not rebuilding. Sure, we have the value to get him with lower level prospects. I just don't think that Pittsburgh will see it that way. Everyone values their own players higher than anyone else does. If we want to make a trade happen, we will have to meet THEIR price. We are used to being on the selling end of trades. Being buyers is an entirely different animal. We have already been trying to get Syndergaard for 2 years now. It hasn't happened. Why does everyone think that any other trade will be so much easier? And Mena is a personal favorite of mine. I value him far more than anyone else does. That is just me.

Few trades are easy to make most teams don’t see their players and the other teams players the same way plus the financial implications of the players and the teams confuse the player to player valuations. Then try to match each team’s needs and longer term objectives. All that does tend to mute trade activity.

We can opine on trades but when it come to a deal developing .... it is Preller and his evaluation of the Padres’ ML and minor league talent that is critical ... and that likely is different than MLB Pipeline and others. Add that Preller has said he is trying to build an organization to win in the short run AND in the long run, so I expect he will not deal any prospect HE thinks will emerge as a special talent .... even if it cost him making a deal for a short run benefit.

Preller will only make a trade if it is at his price and preserves his view of the future of his talent. So, more likely FA may be route one on some slots.

So, especially for next season, is not going to push (overpay based on HIS view) for anyone .... not Kluber ... not Marte ... but seek alternatives and maybe even stay pat.

I agree

Of course we all know and understand this, and this is why we have our really good farm system because of how Preller knows prospects. However, we are now into the dead part of the baseball year, and many of us come here because we still want to talk SD baseball. So, yes, we dream of being the GM and concoct crazy, complex options to take SD to the promise land. And even though most of the trade scenarios are preposterous, will never happen, and some people tell others they are on meds. Keep them coming, because talking crazy SD baseball is still better than crickets!!

Let me resurrect the Myers for Price trade discussion. (Rekindled from a MLBTradeRumors comment concerning Price to Texas).

On the surface Myers (3 years / $61MM) vs. Price (3 years / $96MM) ... straight up ... would shift $12MM in payroll from Boston to SD annually (and SD could handle that) while getting a more productive player.

At that level it helps Boston meet its stated objective of getting below the luxury tax level. However, it is really more beneficial to Boston’s objective. Luxury tax is calculated on AAV ... Myers is only at $13.8MM while Price is at $31MM ... so Boston actually clears $17.2MM getting them more efficiently towards their objective.

Add that if Martinez opts out ... a spot of Myers as LF/1B/DH ... actually a slot even if Martinez does not opt out and they move Bradley instead (Benintendi to CF).

Probably would not go down that cleanly ... extra bodies probably to Boston for the productivity difference ... maybe

Price in not the #1 he once was but neither is Myers the player he was thought to be. I guess it is how much is it worth to move Myers rather than the benefit of getting Price? Guessing Boston would be looking for pitching to balance the deal. Lauer?

There is no way AJP stands pat this offseason. He’s got some clear needs on the ML roster and tons of prospect capital to use in trades. Ownership and AJP himself have stated 2020 is a big year for the franchise. I don’t think ownership handed out franchise record contracts to Manny and Hosmer to just wait until Patino and Gore are ready in 2022. Let’s look at LHSP for example. You have two established young starters in Joey and Lauer. Then you have untouchable Gore with Cantillo, Morejon, Weathers in a the minors. Amongst Lauer, Joey, Weathers, Morejon and Cantillo I could see  2 being moved this offseason for upgrades to the ML roster. Then look at the organizational depth in the middle INF and C. Those are areas of strength where AJP can use in trade to fill needs.

I agree with your premise but Gore will be in S.D. in 2020 unless he has some sort of setback and most definitely in the Opening Day rotation in 2021.......along with Patino.

Not going to have to wait until 2022 on these two.

And while I love having such a deep Farm system now is the time to trade some for major league talent.

Both because we are "ready to contend" and because we will have issues making room for all on the 40 man roster after this season anyway.

The roster will start to become an issue and trading multiple prospects for major league ready talent is a better situation than

possibly losing some for nothing.

I agree Preller has certain "untouchables"....but i don't think it goes very far passed Gore/Patino/Edwards/Abrams.

IMO Morejon is available.
