Trade ideas
Quote from fenn68 on January 3, 2020, 7:20 pmQuote from BoosterSD on January 3, 2020, 6:27 pmPerusing the internet on a Friday, trying to find more Padre stuff to review. I came across an "article" on friarsonbase that suggests that we sign Nova as a back end starter, depending on price.....maybe.
Here is the one that got me. Author suggests that we trade for Haniger. Which, in itself, has been presented on this thread, and in all, is not a bad idea. What I thought was a bad idea, was the package that he proposed sending in order to get Haniger.
Margot, Trammell, Lawson, and Espinoza for Haniger.
Seems a bit high to me, thoughts?
Looking at his past 3 years ... Nova is no better than Lucchesi (who he would be bumping) but would cost more. No upside of signing him.
Now I have liked Haniger ... when healthy a very good hitter and low cost with 3 control years. He is a RF (not a CF ... actually a Myers type CF) and if they added him what do you do with Myers ... move him to CF? Do they rely 100% on Grisham / Cordero in CF? If they underperform (good chance in 2020) and moved Margot / Trammell in the deal where does the Padres get a CF late in 2020 and then 2021.
Not sure the improvement over Myers in RF isn’t offset by CF issues for the next couple of years. The dealing of Trammell who is the leading candidate to either take over a LF/CF slot once Pham is gone or sooner if Grisham can’t handle it is the concern. No major prospect for the OF is in the queue.
Good player that seems like the wrong fit for the 2020 roster as it is constructed.

This is obviously just some national writer who has no real idea of the Padres resources or true needs just taking a shot. Haniger is definitely good, don’t get me wrong, but the Padres are not going to do a big trade or signing for RF unless/until Myers is gone. Besides which, with CF being our biggest present and future need, AJ will not trade both our primary current and future CF. Especially when he just traded both Reyes and Allen for Trammell. The author should have finished thinking this one over before posting it.

While it is a Padre focused website, the author is a Braves fan that is based back east. So yeah, while he is probably a little more knowledgeable than others about SD since he writes many articles for the page. But I thought he was way off on this suggestion.

AJP has been linked to Haniger before.. So I could see a fit .. But I can see the package being more like Naylor+ Q and Franchy

Quote from Henry Silvestre on January 5, 2020, 4:36 amWe should trade Guerra to Phillies for Stott (SS A-) he would give us another SS/2B/CF option in between Arias (AA) and Abrams (FtW) as he would start at LE... And save us a 40..
Love to see what Guerra can be pitching wise and his ability to play SS in a pinch is a great asset to have..BUT with him out of options and a roster spot needed (Stammen) why not maximize on a "dream".. Phillies need P badly.. This is a no brainer for them

Stott is a Top 100 prospect and their SS of the future ... not moving him for just Guerra or even Munoz ... unproven RP. Now if you offer Yates you might get their interest.
With Tatis ... Arias ... Abrams as Padre SS options not all that sure adding another A ball SS would be the Padres’ first choice ... now if we were talking about a CF/RF?
Actually I think the much maligned Perdomo has more current trade value than Guerra with his ML experience and better RP stats vs. other ML RP than most think ... not great but useful. Guerra is too much an unknown to get any kind of return that meets his upside potential.

Henry, I love the idea & the ambition, but have to agree with FENN; Top 100 prospect is way too high even with Guerra's obvious potential, because he is out of options. This REALLY torpedoes his value as a trade candidate, especially having just converted to RP less than a year ago. Think the likely outcome with Guerra is he gets Waived at very last roster move of ST; other teams would have to add him to their 25-man, which seems unlikely at that point (if he didn't make Pads 25-man). The ideal would be for him to be off 40-man in Pads system developing. Hopefully I'm wrong & he wins the last bullpen spot, but at this point at full health there are only 3 jobs available in pen, with Yates, Pom, Stammen, Pierce Johnson (no options), & Strahm as locks.
Also agree Perdomo most likely here. His starting experience/ability to go multiple innings is a bargain @ 1 MM, but Pads have tons of guys already on 40-man who could fill the long / swing role. Perdomo's value likely higher to many other teams than us. Not remotely close to top 100 prospect, but a decent one.
Only other names I see unless Preller has something bigger already lined up are Naylor (better as a part of a larger trade), Margevicius (limited value), or Espinoza. Still like the Espinoza for a low level good prospect deal idea; Stammen signing both insures against AND makes more likely a Yates extension (guessing 75% chance framed by Will Harris' 3/24 deal @ age 35). If Yates does extend, Pads would control their "best" 5 RP's for at least 3 years each. Still 3 spots open plus much more spot duty, but a LOT of names there: Castillo, Guerra, Wingenter, G. Reyes, Bednar, Barraclough, Steven Wilson, Evan Miller, Jordan Guerrero, Darius Valdez, Hansel Rodriguez, Henry Henry....
Espinoza's stuff better than all of them... but he is a longshot a long way from returning. We can free up a roster spot temporarily putting him on 60-day IL (highly likely) at start of ST, but that uses an option, costs MLB $, and eventually we might be forced into a roster decision when he does return, which won't be to MLB.

Horrible deal for SD. Would rather have Kiriloff in SD, since he is probably better than Haniger and under control longer than Haniger. And M. Smith is probably not better than Grisham, and if not, really the same player. So rather have the platoon of Margot and Grisham than Smith and Grisham. And dont want to trade out Quantrill for a RP in Graterol, when we have a ton of a RPs already.

Keep being creative. SD says YES ... SEA probably says YES ... but MINN a big NO.
Minn gets a over priced Seager (3 years / $53MM ... 3rd year vests with a trade) and Quantrill for two of the better prospects in MLB ... Kirilloff (MLB #15 and near the ML as a 1B) and Granterol (MLB #53). They will just leave Sano at 3B and work on a one year stop gap at 1B until Kirilloff is ready. (maybe they would be interested in dealing a prospect for Naylor and France?)
Seattle comes out OK payroll-wise and gets some good prospects ... so might go that way ... if they see Myers a push with Seager ... then is dealing Haniger worth the rest?
SD makes out like a bandit ... clearing Myers' contract and getting 3 years in RF of a cheaper (better) Haniger plus a SP (already touched AAA) prospect rated better than Morejon or Quantrill. Side note: would pass on Mallex Smith who for some reason has regressed to the worst defensive CF in MLB.
For me ... big yes for SD but a lot work would need to be done to convince MINN.
