Depth chart that I see shows Miley and Lorenzen as #4 and #5.

That depth chart isnt correct, and/or updated. They have Bauer, Castillo, Gray, DeSclafani, with Miley being their #5.

http://mlb.mlb.com/team/depth_chart/index.jsp?c_id=cin

Bauer or Castillo would be our #1, and its arguable that for 2020 that Gray or DeSclafani could slide into our two spot.

So I think they are good on SP.

https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/teams/CIN/cincinnati-reds/depth-chart/

It is weird they don’t list DeSclafani at all?

But they have Lorenzen as both RP and SP.

I’m thinking the #5 is supposed to be DeSclafani.

Still.....I’m gonna predict our rotation comes very close to theirs if not better in 2020.

I’d put Paddack and Lamet along side Castillo and Bauer.

We’ll see about the rest.

More so in 2021, especially Lamet. He wont have the innings to do what Castillo or Bauer will do in 2020.

Innings may be an issue since all 5 potential CINN starters pitched more innings in 2019 than any of the SD potential starters. DeSciafani was the lowest CINN (167 innings) while Lucchesi was the highest SD (163 innings).

In comparing the potential starters ... trying to take out the home field bias ... compared the 2019 AWAY ERA:

1.   2.71 ... Gray

2.   2.92 ... Lamet

3.   2.94 ... Davies

4.   3.53 ... Paddack

5.   3.87 ... Miley

6.   3.88 ... Castillo

7.   4.27 ... DeSciafani

8.   4.31 ... Bauer

9.   5.14 ... Richards

10.   6.22 ... Lucchesi

***   5.52 ... Quantrill (1st in if someone fails)

Past results do not alway translate into future performance but it looks as though the Top 3 SP for each team is a bit of a push IF the SD pitchers can pitch more innings than in 2019.

#4 and #5 for the Padres could be the issue with Richards being an unknown and Lucchesi just being ineffective (and he was the Padres top innings SP).

So, from a 1 - 5 SP view ... advantage CINN.

Also, Lucchesi could really be on a short leash if the Padres want to get a good start to 2020 .... a good ST by Quantrill might him the #5 slot ... then, a big opportunity for Gore / Patino to arrive earlier than anticipated. Lucchesi's AWAY ERA of 6.22 is a pretty low bar to clear. Maybe even Morejon or Bolanos could be an upgrade.

Wonder if AJP and Tingler want a Chirisnos Reunion...

Wonder if AJP and Tingler want a Chirisnos Reunion...

Was the same thing with the report he will decide soon. Then AJ could deal Hedges as some here seem desperate to do.  Could be a nice bridge player with post season experience.

If, as they should, the Padres seek to bolster the offense ... and pick up some needed OBP throughout the line-up .. Chirinos is a good call. Of the top 42 catchers last year he had a 113 wRC+ (7th) and an .347 OBP (8th) ... pretty consistent with his career numbers.

At 35, probably tops out at 100 games starting at catcher (106 last season) ... so a good 50/50 balance with Mejia (with one or the other getting some 1B to spell Hosmer v LHP) ... so they have some 162 game offense from the catching slot. He earned $5.75 MM last season on a 1 year deal ... so probably something similar for 2020 as a year older and limited in games.

If that falls into place ... hopefully Preller has a deal in the background for Hedges ... clearly some teams would take him (e.g. LAA, Houston with big offenses come to mind).

I have been waiting on the enormous potential from Franchy Cordero for some time to develop. He is now 25 ... and off a couple of injury ridden seasons. Now I am more of wishing for the long shot on his development over projecting it .. but nowhere close to relying on it even as a 4th OF. Have Grisham and Trammell ahead of him as LHH options going forward.

Yes he has raw power ... he has speed ... he has a plus arm BUT as the Padres transition to better OBP and bat to ball skills ... can we see Cordero go the way of Renfroe?

His ML time highlights a big swing and miss profile (over 36% K-rate) and not much ability to hit LHP. His defense metrics are not that good even with speed / arm pluses. Did look at his winter league stats and although the slash line is excellent ... the K% is bad and that is in winter ball ... not encouraged when he faces ML pitching.

Almost feel like having him out of the way would be a benefit, but then potential is enticing.  Ruben Rivera without the ick factor.
