Trade ideas
Quote from JasonE135 on January 1, 2020, 11:29 amQuote from MrPadre19 on January 1, 2020, 10:58 amSo with the Reds signing Shogo the word now is they will either move Nick Senzel to SS or trade him for other needs.
I would love a scenario where we get Senzel for 2b....he could be our guy for a long time.
Also they are in “win now” mode.
They need a starter for sure.
They need a true SS and their 1b is 36 years old....although they have Moustakas now.
Might cost a lot but would it have to include Patino?
Anyone think this is a good idea to add that last bat we really need or no?
I would LOVE to get Senzel. I just don’t see us matching up for a trade. They are currently looking at him as the major piece in a trade for Lindor. That means he is seen as having HUGE value. As they are currently trying to trade him for a Star SS, I don’t see them pivoting to trading him for pitching.
I actually don’t think that they really see starting pitching as a big need for them. If they do, and they are truly in win now mode, I think they would ask for Paddack. Maybe Lamet. They are the only ones who could help them right away.
They are looking for immediate help in the bullpen. They are also looking for a catcher who is a good hitter. I know many people here doubt Mejia, but he is a C who is a very good hitter, has a cannon arm, his defense is trending up, he has long control and he is major league ready, so he can help them now. Maybe he and a very good reliever or 2 could get Senzel? Maybe add our top 2B/SS prospect who is close to the majors. They would try to demand Abrams, but AJ would get them down to Miller, Marcano or Arias. The reliever would probably have to be Munoz. Maybe Baez as the second reliever/possible starter for them? It’s a lot to pay, but they would demand a lot. I think it would be worth it. He is/will be a premium contact hitter with some power.

Agree pitching will not motivate them (not even Paddack) .... now offer Tatis and that is different. Prospects don’t cut it while they are building a team to win in 2020.
They will go with Galvis at SS and Senzel probably will be all over the field ... especially if Akiyama does not pan out fully but also in both corner OF spots.
CINN need to get an elite SS in return for Senzel ... that is why Lindor makes sense for Senzel / Galvis. Not sure who is holding that deal up.
Maybe CINN wants Cleveland to eat some of Lindor’s salary ... maybe Cleveland wants more for 2 years of an All Star SS and MVP candidate or is dragging their feet to see if the LAD come up with a better return (e.g. Lux or Verdugo plus May).
Preller could squeeze in I guess ... CINN has to get Lindor then if SD gets Senzel ... would Cleveland getting Galvis (from CINN) and Pham (from SD) plus a couple of “better prospects” (Miller, Olivares?)from SD given everyone what they need for now and the future?
Senzel goes to LF for SD to replace Pham (longer term value) at the expense of prospects ... maybe 2B in 2021 after the departure of Profar and none of the internal prospects pan out.

Obviously in your trade scenario he would be gone, but if he is not traded he will require a spot. He may have options left, I am not sure. Wingenter as well. I am sure Barraclough has a guaranteed contract as well. Maybe one of these guys can be our long man out of the bullpen. Whatever. What I am saying is that our bullpen is a lot more crowded than I thought it was.
He is on a MiL deal with an invite to ST according to the write up from MLBTR.

Their rotation is in better shape than ours, could be top 5 in baseball this season. They need bull pen help more than another SP.

Quote from fenn68 on January 1, 2020, 1:10 pmThe following may be a trade idea with no real objective BUT after looking at MLBTradeRumors write-up on CF that are / may be available .... and considering some teams are in the hunt of CF ... wonder what Margot might fetch on the trade market. Frankly the list had some very poor options of the old over the hill, non-CF who could be used in CF, high salary / high return chips in a deal, and just plain bad CF.
Took a look at the three more discussed names among CF with 500 PA (31) options:
S.Marte .... 3.0 WAR (#9) driven by being #8 in wRC+ being offset by #28 in dWAR (2 years / $11.5 + 12.5)
Margot ..... 1.6 WAR (#16) driven by #26 in wRC+ being offset by #7 in dWAR (3 years / $2.1MM + 2 arbs)
Bradley ..... 1.4 WAR (#21) driven by #21 in wRC+ being offset by #15 in dWAR (1 year / $11MM)
Sort of what the buyer needs (and can afford) ... offense vs defense plus contract. However, given Margot's control, low contract, and defense ... he may be the value player of those three and could get a good return. Margot may pencil out as "average" but if your option for CF is near the bottom ... average can really appeal.
So, would Preller "gamble" if the return was appealing ... would have to rely on Grisham - Cordero - Trammell providing enough CF performance to cover the loss of Margot.
Probably not something that will evolve ... but

I was thinking the same thing. You could gamble on trading Margot, and hopefully sign a cheap stop gap for 2020 to pair with Grisham. You could look at a Maybin, Rajai Davis, or maybe a Pillar signing to get you through 2020. Then based on performance, figure out CF for 2021 with Grisham or Trammell.

Depth chart that I see shows Miley and Lorenzen as #4 and #5.
Lorenzen is a reliever who only pitched 83 innings last year.
There’s no way Lorenzen goes 150+ innings in 2020.
It would seem to me if they are wanting to compete in 2020 they need one more SP and put Lorenzen back in the Pen.
If they don’t get Lindor for Senzel(highly likely) maybe a Quantril/Mejia package?
That would help them in 2020 and beyond....

Quote from MrPadre19 on January 1, 2020, 2:13 pmHow many teams would Margot be an improvement for in CF?
Enough of an improvement that they would be willing to give up anything of value for?
His offense hasn’t materialized.....he’s a 4th outfielder defensive replacement.
Margot in a package may be worth something.....but not by himself.

Well since he graded out as #16 out of the 31 CF with >500 PA ... about 1/2 the teams. There are a lot of unproductive OF out there. Mets come to mind.
Plus if he is only a #4 OF in the Padres view ... why would not the Padres be interested in dealing him?
Your right he would not get a ML type return of any quality BUT we are working with Preller who can turn a marginal ML asset into a plus prospect in the lower minors .... Solarte for Olivares? Rodney for Paddack?
Plus add if they have any faith in Grisham ... he gets 75% of the starts vs. RHP (who Margot can't hit).
Not likely the Padres move on from Margot but do think some team could dangle an intriguing prospect that could make Preller consider it.

Quote from MrPadre19 on January 1, 2020, 2:59 pmI like Margot.....but I’m ready to win and as far as I’m concerned he needs to only play against LH pitching.
Id like to see a true platoon with Grisham or Cordero.
He’s had the time to develop and prove he can play every day.....if a true platoon can give us a .325+ OBP and lead off
I’m fine with that.
His .304 from last year just isn’t enough.
