Quote from JasonE135 on December 30, 2019, 3:37 pmI agree fenn68. Let’s just give Myers 1 position and let him make it his. Take some stress out of his life, he obviously cannot handle it. I also like your idea of using our #5 or #6 starter as trade for a minor leaguer with real promise. If we are selling to someone desperate for pitching, we have the power. If we are trying to buy a big bat we are desperate for in our lineup, they have the power. I probably wouldn’t trade any pitcher until later in the year when they have proven their value(Quantrill). We are going to need 7-9 starters this year. We used Strahm, Margevicius, Quantrill and Bolanos last year. I don’t want to be forced to rely on any of those except Quantrill next year.
As far as trading for another corner OF, let’s not forget we will have to pay twice. Lucchesie(our most reliable/consistent starting pitcher) and Hedges to get rid of Myers, then whatever prospects are needed to get Marte or Bryant. Either one will cost us at least 1 major prospect and almost certainly more. I am afraid to trade Lucchesie right now, because we would have to rely on Quantrill. Yes I am a big fan and think he will do great but when am injury happens, and it will, we are down to Marg and Bolanos. I DO NOT want to rush Baez, Morejon, Patino or Gore out of need. The last thing we need to do is destroy the confidence of those who will be our future.
I know everybody likes to throw guys around the field, Tatis to RF, CF or 2B, Grisham or Pham to RF, Etc. Does anyone else ever wonder why all major league managers aren’t doing that? There are tons of teams with too many LF and there are not enough RF. Why don’t they all just move them? I have to believe that the baseball professionals know something we don’t.

Quote from TatisJr on December 30, 2019, 5:04 pmHere’s a random trade idea I thought of due to AJPs reported interest in Senzel before and the Indians, Reds recent history of dealing with the Padres.
Lindor, Hand to the Reds
Senzel, Amir Garrett to Padres
Abrams, Strahm, Baez, Wingeter, Naylor, Galvis to Indians
Cincy gets the top SS in baseball and a reliable vet reliever to put in the backend of the pen.
The Padres get Senzel who is 24 projects as a big time bat and is versatile/athletic enough to be plugged in CF, RF or 2B. Think younger more powerful Merrifield. They add another dominant lefty in Garrett to a strong pen. Padres strengthen their pen and get an impact bat while not adding to payroll.
Indians get a vet in Galvis to cover SS in 2020. They get Abrams as their SS of the future. They shed the salary commitments to Lindor and Hand. They get Strahm and Baez to replace Hand in the pen and pick up Naylor to be their 1b of the future after Santana departs.Padres also get the added benefit of helping steer Lindor away from the Dodgers and to the Reds.

Not nearly enough going to Cleveland ... they would be better off just doing a straight Lindor for Senzel / Galvis deal.
Not sure why no one wants to admit that the Indians wants to win the AL Central in 2020 and will demand ML hitters in return for Lindor. Also, after years of being around $130MM they have already dropped the payroll down to under $100MM .. so not a big need to shed payroll and just moving Lindor (net of Galvis) drops them by more than another $10MM.

Quote from TatisJr on December 30, 2019, 6:36 pmI agree with you that the Indians best route is to keep Lindor and Clev and go for it in 2o20. If Twins or Sox pull out ahead you can deal them at the deadline. I really based this idea off the last 3 way deal these teams participated in because the Reds got the premier vet Bauer, the Padres got the premier prospect in TT and the Indians collected a quantity package of young talent.

I see Grisham as our primary CF. He will be the heavy side of a platoon with Margot. He will get 70% of the starts. RF? It’s late in the offseason to try and find a quality starter.
I would say that if we could rid ourselves of $15M per season of Myers money, by adding Luchessi and Hedges, I would do that deal in a heartbeat.
As far as a replacement for Myers in RF, thats simple. Call PIT and get Marte. He is under contract for 2 more seasons at $11M and $12M that is still $4M and $3M under what we would save in the Myers trade. And while I agree that Martes CF defense is probably on the decline, I see no issue with him in RF for SD and batting some where in the 3-5 spot in the line up.
I thought of Marte too... maybe even directly in a deal for Myers/Lucchesi/Hedges? Pads would have to add more though. More likely it's 2 (or more) separate teams/deals. I don't know if a team would value Hedges this highly though. I originally thought Myers worth 10 MM AAV, Lucchesi worth 5 M AAV. It's positively clear based on market that Myers is < 8 MM AAV, but I guess could argue Lucchesi MIGHT be worth > 5 MM AAV? But remember a team acquring Joey is really getting 1 min. yr, then 3 Arb years. Let's speculate those as 3.5 / 6 / 8 MM? That's actually a 4/18 contract. Below market for sure, but by how much? An ADDITIONAL 15 MM? Would make it 4 / 33 = 8 MM AAV for a decent # 4 SP?
Similarly Hedges is likely a 3/12 (3+4+5 in Arb) contract.... that is awfully steep for a guy who is miles away from even bare bones acceptable offense for a starter like .215/.290 or something, even with his defense. I don't see much if any value in addition to his existing 3 arb years (unlike Lucchesi since still @ min this year). But still interesting MLBTR chat guy made the connection...
With Agiyama gone, making this trade would almost certainly make Padres worse in 2020, but there would likely be another move/s made, and even if not, think team would be better positioned for 2021 on ceding their playing time to others. Big question is can Preller afford to do that? Probably not unless he's 100% certain of an "upgrade" trade being do-able such as Marte or Merrifield...

Quote from fenn68 on December 31, 2019, 3:22 pmTwins apparently just made a substantial offer to Josh Donaldson for 3B (Sano to 1B I guess) after basically striking out on getting as real SP help (signed lower end FA Hill and Bailey). IF they go all in and get Donaldson, then:
WASH and ATL have big holes at 3B .... Cleveland has a much stronger competitor for the AL Central in MINN even with a bad SP (no depth) staff.
Not sure how WASH and ATL approach that with nothing on the FA market and an Arenado deal is really a long shot based on the talent COLO would want in return plus his new contract. Doubt CLEV would just give up but might have to shuffle the deck chairs to add some more OF offense.
Could Preller get into the mix of potential future moves .. not sure what gets offered or what Preller would want from them ... and there is always the 3 way deals. Actually all three teams probably want hitters ... not pitchers which disadvantages SD baring a 3 way deal.

Quote from BoosterSD on December 31, 2019, 6:15 pmHow about this for a crazy thought. Putting two trains of thought together for one massive trade. Fenn and others have suggested that we might not be overly competitive until 2021. And Fowler has said that he would pay up to $30M to make Myers go away.
So what if they did that for basically the year 2020? Fowler and company just bite the bullet and pay an extra $23M± for 2020.
SD trades Myers, Perdomo, and Naylor or France to COL for Desmond, Davis, McGee, and Shaw. This would be a huge increase in salary for this season; however, would totally reduce SDs payroll for 2021 and going forward. Even with the buyouts of all 4 players, SD payroll commitment for 2021 would be around $97M prior to arb raises and the increase in minimum player salary for 2021. SD could have almost $40M for offseason trades and/or FA signings in 2020.
Desmond could be our RHH CFer, RFer, and/or 1B. Davis, McGee, and Shaw could be potentially better pitching in SD rather than Coors, and if any of the three bounce back to some value, they could be deadline deal candidates. If not, no big, because they are all done after this season.

I'm trying to see the downside for either team, but on the surface your idea is interesting. Would create crowd in SD pen that might be a big much. Trades possible sure.

The possible downfall for COL is that they are on the hook for Myers for two more years. Although his bat should really benefit from 81 games at Coors. But it is actually about the same dollars each way, just spread out differently.
Perdomo would go to COL, so there is one BP spot. Many of our other current bullpen candidates have options, so they can start the year in AAA or AA. Only need two spot to open up for this trade.

I don’t see this trade being feasible or fitting in with AJ’s plan. First off, I don’t think that Perdomo and Naylor would be enough to get the Rockies to take on the additional years and money of Myers. Other than that, we have Yates, Pom, Castillo, Munoz, Johnson, Strahm, Guerra and Quantrill for our bullpen. Yates, Pom and Johnson are off-limits since they have guaranteed contracts. Quantrill is the long man, spot starter. Guerra is out of options, he doesn’t make the team, we lose him. I believe Castillo and Strahm are out of options as well. I think Munoz is the only one who could realistically be sent down and that would cause serious bad feelings. Besides, we are currently predicted to have a top 5 bullpen. This would destroy that.
I think we should just wait on a Myers trade. We cannot spend his contract money this offseason. What we can do is wait. We have a lot of excess pieces that people here cannot wait to trade. Our best bet may be waiting for other teams to get desperate. A few months into the season there could be several teams who are competitive but short on starting pitching. At least one of Quantrill, Lucchesie, Baez, Morejon or Bolanos should be pitching well enough to appear ml-ready and make teams want them. Maybe even Davies. If they want to pick up an ml ready pitcher and don’t want to or have prospects to trade they may be willing to take on Myers money.
