Myers and Cordero are our only 2 true RF options since we have so many rag-armed OF. Putting Pham or Grisham there would result in a lots of singles becoming doubles and doubles becoming triples.
Pham is our LF. That is where he belongs. I see Grisham as our primary CF. He will be the heavy side of a platoon with Margot. He will get 70% of the starts. RF? It’s late in the offseason to try and find a quality starter. Myers can realistically give us .240/.320 20-HR 20–SB. Those aren’t terrible numbers. If we had the chance to pick up a true quality RF to replace him with right now I would do that trade in a second. And I am a supporter of Hedges, and less so of Lucchesie. But signing Shogo? Nobody knows what he will do yet. He will probably give us a better OBP. Maybe even .60 points higher at BEST. He won’t hit as many HR as Myers, and I doubt he even steals as many bases. It is also a pretty big downgrade in defense because he would force Grisham into RF where he is seriously out of position.
Whatever. I vote we give Myers another year.

I agree that a Myers 2020 bounce back is likely. I understand Hedges tremendous defensive value, but I’d be fine parting with him. Less so about Joey, he is undervalued, but there are more talented arms on the way. I’d be fine holding onto Myers in 2020 unless they planned on using the freed up funds to add a star caliber player. If that’s the case, bite the bullet on Myers and use those financial resources to get impact help for 2020.

All the scouting suggests Grisham has an arm better suited for LF (maybe CF) but do we really know how weak is his arm? Not as though Myers’ arm grades out that well. Doubt he is the next Luis Durango arm.
Is there a trade-off to be considered with Grisham have better range (actually catch more fly balls) than Myers vs the Myers advantage with his arm?
An academic debate as Akiyama signs with the Reds ($15MM/3 years) and Grisham will get the first shot in CF. Plus may need Cordero in waiting to replace Grisham as the LHH CF option if Grisham struggles (and his ML debut away for Miller is not that impressive).
Speculation aside ... Myers is your RF for 2020 and we should hope for a resurgence at least to his norm. Padres: just leave him alone in RF ... don’t platoon him ... bat him (and keep him) in the 6th/7th slot in the line-up even if he gets hot.

I would say that if we could rid ourselves of $15M per season of Myers money, by adding Luchessi and Hedges, I would do that deal in a heartbeat.
As far as a replacement for Myers in RF, thats simple. Call PIT and get Marte. He is under contract for 2 more seasons at $11M and $12M that is still $4M and $3M under what we would save in the Myers trade. And while I agree that Martes CF defense is probably on the decline, I see no issue with him in RF for SD and batting some where in the 3-5 spot in the line up.

This is probably the biggest thing SD needs to do to be successful in 2020. Im tired of hearing "Myers is athletic enough" to play anywhere on the field. He might be, but his head is not strong enough to do that. I admire his whatever is best for the team attitude, but apparently he cant handle the bouncing around.
Just leave him in one spot, and let him get his head straight!

Or go bigger (add a few bucks) and deal for Bryant for RF? Or go smaller and potentially sign Ozuna whose FA run is not going all that well and may end up signing for a bargain deal (1 year?). There would be options ... and remember they would be saving $15MM in each of the next 3 years plus saving money on Hedges in his arbitration years. Haven’t given up on Haniger as a trade option. Probably could land Reddick as a one year filler from Houston. Having the payroll flexibility gives options.
May open a payroll window in 2021-22 to allow for a more critical FA signing as the Padres are closer to being a legit contender.

MLBTradeRumors did a piece on FA pitchers / trade candidates still “available” to teams wanting to upgrade the bottom part of their rotation. Not the most compelling group or, if by trade, expensive.
Specifically mentioned as teams wanting an upgrade: LAA, MINN, HOUSTON, and WASH ... all contenders / playoff teams.
Enter Preller ... since his recent moves have been addressing 2020 upgrades (Pham and Davies) and longer term upgrades (Grisham, Trammell, and Cronenworth).
If Preller is comfortable with Paddack - Lamet - Richards - Davies ... and then upside of the near term prospects ... he could deem one of Lucchesi or Quantrill available to one of those teams for a future upgrade to the roster (doubt a contender is giving a ML piece of any quality)?
Based on Preller’s history ... the return could be a high quality prospect sitting in A-Ball (think the next Paddack or Tatis). Long way off but major upside. AA player if Preller gets lucky ... but not much more for a Lucchesi / Quantrill type.

If Franchy Cordero can stay healthy....yes i realize that's a big if....but if he can i would rather give him half of the AB's in RF or in CF if Grisham doesn't hit.
We have basically forgot how good Cordero "can" be.
I think the main reason AJ hasn't traded away prospects and/or Myers for OF help is because we have Grisham and Cordero.
I have no issue starting the season with LF-Pham-CF-Margot/Grisham-RF-Myers/Cordero.
None.
If Margot only has to hit against LH pitching.
If Myers only hits against LH pitching and 50% of the RH's.
I'm ready to finally see Cordero get 350+ ML AB's.
That being said...get him off the field right now before he gets hurt again!

Just a couple years ago Cordero was getting like 900 PAs between minors/winterleague for 2 or 3 yrs in a row.. He has proven durable in the past hopefully he can guve us 400+ PAs in 2020.. If so we don't need any OF.. We can givget Whit/Lindor or Contreras instead..
I guess with Franchy hitting .657 😆 in the Dominican Winter League playoffs .. If we made just ONE P and ONE position add between now and ST
1 P add in order of preferemce for me

What about dealing with the Cubs for their other catcher Victor Caratini instead of Willson Contreras?
Not quite the hitter BUT a year younger at 26 ... one more control year with 4 ... at league minimum vs Contreras at $4.5MM ... and grades out better defensively. Bonus he is a switch-hitter. He also played 23 games at 1B.
He did hit 266/348/447 last season ... like the OBP. Contreras was better by about .100 in OPS so that is his appeal.
Caratini might be a good match with Mejia ... both switch hitters gives a lot of mix and match opportunities plus some consistent offense out of the catching slot for the entire schedule.
Apparently the ask on Contreras is quite high and some Chicago media suggest to get something done they should consider moving Caratini to get upgrades somewhere rather than keep both because no team will meet the ask for Contreras ... beside he is good for the Cubs if they want to contend in 2020.
Not sure what the Cubs want to improve their position in 2020 but CF has been an ongoing target (they apparently were finalists on Akiyama). Probably not a one for one deal, but how much risk would Preller take by including Margot (or Cordero) in a deal for Caratini? Bet on Grisham (and a quick development of Trammell)? Would think with Ross (a defensive 1st C) managing ... Hedges would be appealing as part of the return.
A catcher who can hit, get on base, and play decent defense will not be cheap even if he is not a headline name. Opens up the window to use Torrens as a trade chip and give Campusano more time to work his way up the minors. Three years from now could have a set of compelling trade chips among Mejia - Caratini - Campusano .. and because the can hit maybe the 1B to replace Hosmer.
Would love Merrifield but everything I hear is the owner loves the guy and will not agree to deal him. If the owner says no ... the GM listens.
