If healthy CUETO is a TORband among baseballs top 10 pitches.. I feel like Kenny Rogers.. The Gambler

After his 2018 and 2019 he only has upside ... can’t go much lower.

And less prospects to make the deal happen. And I think both are better options than Price from BOS. At least Cuetos arm has already fallen off, and been rebuilt.
Not eager to add Cueto and bench (trade) both Lucchesi and Quantrill unless they can get me some offensive help. Padres would have to be pretty sure Cueto would be effective (greater than the other options) over his two years ... more cost than Myers in years 1 and 2 in order to save money in year 3.
Wouldn’t SF ... if they thought he would return to old form ... prefer to keep him and let him build some trade value (which given the need for SP could be very good) by the trade deadline rather than taking Myers?
I would stay away from Price who is beginning to get very worrisome health-wise at a cost greater than Myers.
Padres would love to deal Myers (more so his contract) but if other teams see virtually zero value (no where near the remaining $61MM) .... I still think Myers in RF is more useful than moving his with a load of top prospects or taking back an equally burdensome contract (like Price). Living with another year (and maybe him gaining some additional trade value) while lowering his contact liability could be the better strategy ... not willing to bet on Grisham, Cordero, or Naylor outperforming even the 1 WAR version of Myers in 2020 ... they could actually hurt the Padres chances to get more wins.

I think I would take that bet actually. Considering that Grisham (.7 WAR on baseball reference) (.6 WAR on fangraphs) outperformed Myers in 2019 in WAR both on baseball reference (Myers WAR was -.5) and fangraphs (Myers WAR was .5). I would guess that Grisham simply out performs Myers in almost every offensive category next year, except strike outs, Myers having more.

Quote from 3fingersplit on December 24, 2019, 10:16 pmI personally think Meyers is going to have a very good year and show a lot of people they were wrong. The simple fact that Andy Green is no longer around to screw with this guys head is a huge win for San Diego

Quote from fenn68 on December 25, 2019, 5:46 amUnless the Padres come up with a legit ML RF to replace Myers ... can’t justify them dealing Myers in 2020 and going with one of Grisham, Cordero, or Naylor ... not if they want to improve and get more wins. Not going to get any ML help in return for Myers.
Myers is probably the most reliable bet ... a 1 WAR / 100 wRC+ ... over his career ... basically an “average” player.
Grisham ... given his lack of arm strength and defensive reads ... is thought by most as a LF (maybe CF) but not a RF. My bigger concern is the sustainability of his minor league hitter resurgence after a number of years of mediocrity. Add to that his brief ML time in 2020 was not good away from Miller Park ... wRC+ of 69 and now moving to a pitcher’s park in PETCO. Upside maybe for the future but not one to rely upon if you want to win in 2020.
Cordero ... can he stay healthy (has not for 2 years)? ... can he hit LHP? ... not all that good defensively (reads).
Naylor .... need we say more about his defense? Maybe some big upside offensively but yet to show that in his ML time.
Want to win in 2020 ... need Myers until someone PROVES a better ML option.

This
Myers will bounce back given that he knows where's he going to be on a daily basis.
I'm betting on him being an asset this year.....and I'm not a betting man!

Quote from fenn68 on December 26, 2019, 12:25 pmBaring a surprise move .... Pham in LF and Myers in RF is likely the starting set-up for most games. So, maybe more focus should be on CF (besides the back-ups for LF/RF.
That puts Margot in focus ... offensively challenged but to be fair one of the better defensive CF in 2019. Checked Fangraphs’ dWAR for CF with greater than 500 innings (less than 1/2 season) ... 33 made the list. Margot was #6 (+7.5).
Marte has been tossed around as an alternative in CF but his defense has really eroded and he placed #29 (-5.7) ... not sure that is a good fit for the Padres in CF with the corners not occupied with plus defensive options ... someone has to catch the ball out there.
Not sure the defensive chops for Akiyama but as a LHH ... he should probably not be worse than Cordero (L) ... who has not done well in the defensive scores ... or Grisham who may not be bad but not viewed as above average.
Given the options ... may need to hold onto Margot (can hit LHP) as defensive insurance and figure out who is the better LHH as the platoon partner. Grisham v Cordero right now ... that may have some influence as to how hard they push for Akiyama.
Now one option that no one will like .... but a chance the option that produces the best offensive production .... Myers to CF (should hit better than Margot) and Naylor in RF (may be the better hitter than Margot / Cordero / Grisham in 2020). Might cause some slight defensive concern 🙂

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 26, 2019, 12:37 pmWell if after 40-50 games in Myers still isn’t hitting he can see RF against LH pitching only IMO.
But at his cost he needs a chance to play and produce....with a short leash.
LF-Pham
CF-Margot/Grisham
RF-Myers/Cordero
This would be my preference.

I would not put Myers in CF for even 1 game though. He has only produced for us when he has had a position of his own that he both knows he IS going to play and CAN play. I know everyone wants to maximize value and try to force things to work better: Myers to CF, Tatis to CF, Urias to SS, play them part time, occasionally and hope they still produce like stars. It didn’t work in 2019. It won’t work in 2020. Some players, like Merrifield, can do it. Most can’t. Myers can’t. He is our RF. Period. Tatis is our SS. Pham is our LF. That is the team. We have Grisham and Cordero to mix in for platoon advantages against some RHP. Grisham could possibly become our regular CF for a while if he proves he can play defense and hit enough. Let’s give it a chance to work.
