Quote from Henry Silvestre on December 16, 2019, 2:00 pmQuote from fenn68 on December 16, 2019, 1:36 pmAt this point, I favor NOT signing (or trading for) any SP given the players still on the table (in speculation) considering their cost in pay and/or prospects vs. the incremental production we can rely upon over the upside, low cost options of Lucchesi and Quantrill.
Use the money / prospect assets to focus on offensive now or hold for future deployment when a quality asset becomes available (trade deadline, next winter).
I mean if LAD goes after Clevenger-- we should one up them and get him-- Clevenger is literally ONE dude I would lead with Patino for

The Padres remain in search of relief help, and evidently a reunion with right-hander Craig Stammen isn't off the table. Stammen posted a 3.06 ERA in three seasons with San Diego before hitting the free-agent market this winter. The Padres have already added left-hander Drew Pomeranz, but they seem committed to building a deep and experienced bullpen to complement a young rotation.
I would not be surprised if the Padres had a number that would they would go to to re-sign Stammen and Stammen and his agent want to see if he could do better .... e.g. player due diligence.

Can't see Cleveland moving Clevenger at this point ... they made the decreased payroll objective by dealing a player that did not help them in 2019 ... and they just missed out on the playoffs. Clevenger is very very good and low cost ... they guy they want (need) to make that last hurrah for the playoffs in 2020-21 with Lindor still around. Rebuild later while basking in the glow of another World Series Championship (at least try).
KC, DET, CHI probably are not going to be a factor in 2020 and MINN might have trouble repeating given their pitching.
If anything CLEVELAND may actually spend some of that Kluber "savings" to fill in some offensive needs at 2B and the OF (not Myers). Their SP is just fine. Low cost signings (don't have much to trade outside their "stars" who they need to win).

I agree Fenn, I look at CLE to take the 1st half of the 2020 season and go for it again. They are almost a shoe in for the division title. I think they will take that $18M± from Kluber, and see them signing Ceasar Hernandez (previously of PHI) for 2nd base, and then I would not be surprised to see them sign Dickerson or Ozuna for a COF spot.
Should they falter in the 1st half, then look to CLE to possibly clean house and rebuild.

Quote from BoosterSD on December 16, 2019, 7:56 pmWhile Duquette and Ferrin where talking about Myers on XM this morning, they kind of casually/jokingly suggested a trade with COL. Their bad relievers for Myers. So I started looking over the contracts.
Myers is $61M
Wade Davis - 2020 is $17M, and a mutual option for $15M or a $1M buyout. Becomes a player option with 30 games finished. Should not occur on SD with both Yates, Pomeranz, and Munoz.
Jake McGee - 2020 is $9.5M, and a team option for $9M or $2M buyout. Becomes guaranteed if a couple of items happen, should not be an issue.
Bryan Shaw - 2020 is $9M, and a team option for $9M or $2M buyout. Becomes guaranteed if a couple of items happen, again should not be an issues.
That would put SD's liability for those 3 for 2020 at $35.5M, or an extra $15M over Myers. However, for 2021 at only $5M. And then nothing for 2022. I think that would be difficult for SD this year, and too light for COL in 2021 and 2022.
What if we were to include Oliveras's dead money and Kinsler along with Myers. That would be $32.5M to COL and $35.5M to SD. Saving $3.25M for COL this year. That leaves COL holding the bag for $36M (after SD paying all 3 buyouts) in 2021 and 2022 for Myers and ???? Would need to send cash and/or prospects to balance out the deal.
Although it could be said, that if COL keeps Davis, they may not have other options for finishing games and his option becomes his to invoke and they would then be on the hook for an additional $15M. So could that go towards some of the Myers money?

Stammen /Strahm/Pomz and Yates the Vet squad
Munoz/Castillo/Bednar/Baez.. The Young Studs .. That Pen would be nasty..and still have Perdomo/Wing.../Q/Bolanos that is great and Deep

Look at my post above... Where tge hell are these guys going to fit in on our pen? Or SP ? We have room (not id Stammen comes back) for maybe 1 BP arm and 1 SP (uograde)..can only carry 13 total P's and we have 13 BParms + the xurrent stable of SP Paddack/Richards/Lamet/Davies /Lucchesi

If it can get us out of the Myers contract, pretty much by the end of the 2020 season, then we can find room for these guys in our BP. Almost all of the guys in our pen except for Yates and Pom all have options. So they can start the year in AAA or AA, and then after the COL adds have built some value by not pitching in Coors, we can trade them and bring up our young guys.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on December 16, 2019, 8:45 pmI think a 3 way with Seattle and KC can be interesting
KC said no to taking on Myers but how about this
.. SDP get Haniger (+$5 mil salary) OF + Duffy (+$15 mil salary) SP and Whit (+$5 mil)
.. Seattle gets Myers + Hedges + Lucchesi + Potts +$21 mil
..KC gets Dee Gordon + Quantrill + Naylor + Hunt + Morejon
We add Whit 2B and Haniger RF. To upgrade the offense big time... Without adding a cent on payroll.. Also SP Duffy slides right into /4th/5th SP we do pay $21 mil so Myers saves us $15 or so per year..
