Trade ideas

How is this for a creative way to get rid of Myers... Myers +Lucchesi + Morejon to Philly for Seagura (AJP tried to get him from Seattle last off-season).. Not a bad fallback plan if we can't get WHIT.. Philly can simple resign Hernandez or sign Starling Castro for around $6 mil per.. Wil will absolutely rake in that banbox a Win/win for both

A trade for Merrifield in exchange for Myers would seemingly require a trove of top prospects.  I mean what a move if it could be pulled off. As long as we retain Gore, Patino, Abrams, Arias, and Campusano I think all other specs / young MLB SP after Lamet are fair game. I know I am asking to protect a lot of specs, but seeing this FA market really makes me want to hold onto young, controllable top specs. That could truly be the consolidation move that frees up money.

I dont know if I give up Mejia, Baez, and Quantrill for Marte. I really dont want to do that for an aging OFer.  Seems like an early Preller move, rather than his more recent moves.  Baez has shown serious talent at a young age. Mejia has enormous upside when Cs are seeming to be a limited commodity.  I would do L or Q with a Mercano level prospect at most. Remember Marte has limited control and is already somewhat expensive -- this is the reason he is being shopped.

I really don't mind seeing what we have with Grisham, Cordero, Trammel, and Olivares even if it means we lose the postseason.  Those homegrown / controllable options I think give us necessary flexibility to make moves for a deep run.

Hosmer isn’t going anywhere. His contract isn’t movable and he’s got a NTC. I’d prefer Merrifield to Marte. Merrifield makes around the same amount of money in 4 years as Marte makes in his remaining 2 years. Plus Whit, can play all over the diamond. His versatility, speed and contract make him more desirable to me. Merrifield to me is a much faster, more athletic version of Mark Loretta. He brings that kind of stability, professionalism and he’s a hitting machine. If Marte is acquired I think he’s strictly a RF in petco and at this stage of his career. Marte is also a dead pull hitter which is fine for the Petco dimensions, but I prefer guys like Whit who hit to all fields.

100% agree.. I don't hate Marte but I don't love him either.. Whit is a whole different ball game.. Besides Altuve ..prettt much the next best 2B in baseball..

Yeah that package is for a Haniger type ..Marte more like .. Torrens + Quantrill + Ornelas

If we truly offered that I dont know how that would be turned down by Pitt. I still think it is borderline too much on our side.

Or Philly can take the Myers / Castro money and just sign Donaldson and be way better off for years.

Plus they "need" a 3b....not a LF/1B or 2b so much.

I'm sure they are in on Donaldson and maybe even Bryant at this point.

In my mind the Padres can't trade Mejia for an OF (or an INF) ... that would leave them with Hedges and the offensive downside of Hedges would more than offset the incremental upgrade of that OF. Padres need to improve offense across the entire line-up.

======

Side comment: I think the defensive value of Hedges (despite the analytics) is way over rated and no way justifies his offensive liability except if he is on a team that is an offensive juggernaut ... that is not (and will not be) the Padres in 2020. Since I don't see any other team trying to trade for him ... teams that need catching and with the reports that Preller is trying to move him ... suggest that his value is not that high in the real world.

I am worried we are trying too hard to deal Myers. The objective should be focused on moving the maximum contract liability ... secondarily moving Myers.

Giving up good prospects to move Myers but NOT much of his contract probably is not a good business proposition. As much as we can hypothesize about what the Padres could do with that money ... no certainty there (maybe the next Ian Kinsler). At some point there is a crossover point where the value of the prospects/players to the Padres exceed what ever they add with the "saved" money from Myers.

For 2020, I am OK if Preller can't move Myers for a reasonable price and give him a run in RF to rebound ... trade value can't apparently get worse.

Porcello signs for $10MM/1 year with the METS after an abysmal 5.52 ERA in 2019.

Padres' young (league minimum) arms have to look pretty valuable to other teams (and to the Padres).
