Quote from Brian Connelly on December 11, 2019, 1:32 pmQuote from BoosterSD on December 11, 2019, 12:47 pmCould see the possibility of a three team deal where NYM gets Marte, SD gets Nimmo, and PIT gets prospects mainly from SD?
I know some will say why dont we just get Marte for ourselves. Well, Nimmo is much cheaper than Marte, only $1.7M estimated arb number for 2020. Younger than Marte and controlled for 3 seasons instead of 2. Nimmo has pretty even splits for both LH and RH pitching and like Marte can handle all 3 OF positions, but is probably best for RF.
An OF of Pham, Margot/Grisham, Nimmo should be really good both for OBP and going and getting the ball on defense.
Nimmo is a LH OBP machine. I would be down with this deal & it seems like it makes sense all around?

Quote from sportwarrior on December 11, 2019, 2:02 pmI want to go on record that I wish we were in the market for Starling Marte. I'd pay more for him than I would a guy like Whit Merrifield.
EDIT: I originally said "much more," but really it wouldn't be THAT much more. I feel like he'd solve a bigger problem for us, though, since none of the MLB/MiLB CFs we have now or on the immediate horizon inspire that much confidence. We do, on the other hand, have plenty of guys to try out at 2b.

Quote from TatisJr on December 11, 2019, 2:35 pmI feel really good about CF with Grisham/Margot. My thinking is Marte is plan D for RF if they can’t land a Bryant, Stanton, Betts type. 🙏😉

Quote from MrPadre19 on December 11, 2019, 2:46 pmYeah I feel better about Margot/Grisham in CF than I do Profar/Garcia at 2b.
Also I’m starting to think Franchy Cordero is about to pay dividends.
Plus with the control and cost of Merrifield I’m really hoping Henry knows something no one else does.

Fair take. He would definitely "cost" less than Merrifield. 2 / 24 vs really 4 / about 24. But have to be the top 2 FA desirability wise on market.

Quote from BoosterSD on December 11, 2019, 5:07 pmQuote from JasonE135 on December 11, 2019, 1:21 pmWe could possibly do that three team for Nimmo using lesser prospects but I don’t know why we would. He definitely has the OBP we are looking for but somehow he still manages to strike out a lot. I also wouldn’t want a player with bulging disks in his neck. Maybe replace Nimmo with Conforto?
I like Conforto a lot as well. However, I think that he is about as much money as Marte. So if thats the case, just go get Marte. Marte is probably better defensively than Conforto. Plus IIRC, Conforto is not that great v LHP, so now you would need someone for ABs in RF against LHP.
Conforto est 2020 salary - $9.2M and arb again in 2021, FA 2022.
Marte - 2020 $11.5M and 2021 - $12.5M, FA 2022.

Apparently we still are.

Quote from fenn68 on December 12, 2019, 1:24 amRendon signs with the LAA. A couple more fringe pitchers sign across the league.
A number of teams may have to alter their improvement strategies and slide more to the trade market.
LAA have an outstanding offense and very weak pitching. Need more than one headline FA yet have s poor farm system.
Plus all the teams that wanted a #4-5 starter have fewer to choose from (and clearly the pay is very high.
Maybe a opportunity opens up for the Pads to trade.

Quote from BoosterSD on December 12, 2019, 5:19 amThe more I think about it, while I like the idea of Whit being the lead off guy and his contract, I think he is just going to be too costly prospect wise for SD to pull off this trade. I think, that between Grisham, Cronenworth, and maybe Profar, and of course Tatis, we have more than enough choices for lead off. At least bridging us to Trammell, who I would think should become our CF/lead off man hopefully by 2021.
I do think they should instead, focus on getting Marte. Pads home page suggested that a combo of Mejia or Torrens plus a young pitcher should get it done. I think it will need to be Mejia and two pitchers, such as maybe Quantrill and Baez, but either way, then we would really have a nice OF of Pham, Margot/Grisham, and Marte with a healthy Cordero for a LHH option with power.
Still would need to find a home for Myers and/or Hosmer. Speaking of which, apparently in talks with KC about Merrifield, AJP was trying to include Myers in the deal, and possibly thats what the hold up is. An according to this report (bleacher report I think) it wasnt Myers himself, it was the money. So maybe this could still happen, just going to need to include more dollars or another prospect to make KC pull the trigger.

Quote from TatisJr on December 12, 2019, 5:36 amHosmer isn’t going anywhere. His contract isn’t movable and he’s got a NTC. I’d prefer Merrifield to Marte. Merrifield makes around the same amount of money in 4 years as Marte makes in his remaining 2 years. Plus Whit, can play all over the diamond. His versatility, speed and contract make him more desirable to me. Merrifield to me is a much faster, more athletic version of Mark Loretta. He brings that kind of stability, professionalism and he’s a hitting machine. If Marte is acquired I think he’s strictly a RF in petco and at this stage of his career he’s not a defensive stud in CF. Marte is also a dead pull hitter which is fine for the Petco dimensions, but I prefer guys like Whit who hit to all fields.
