Trade ideas

I was wondering about his defense and hoped they had moved him to 1b because they have alot of OF prospects...as that article mentions.

But I'll take your word for it.

So when is the DH coming to the NL again?

Lol

Now I don’t think the Padres will deal Yates this winter since they are trying to position themselves for a wild card run in 2020 ... and they are not going to do that without a proven closer set up with several plus RP options (e.g. Munoz).

However, it has to be tempting, given some of the current playoff teams really really need an end of the game option to go the next step in 2020 and could (would) pay a premium piece even for one year of Yates.

IF the Padres are out of it next July .... still may get a very good return on Yates ... so that does cushion the issue.

====

An extension with Yates been floated .... Padres do like Yates and apparently Yates likes the Padres ... still terms are always an issue.

Padres may be concerned about Yates’ age (early 30s) and relatively short run of success plus the burnout of RP. Yates may be concerned about signing an extension and meeting the same fate as Brad Hand and getting traded to somewhere he may not want to go on a contract that may be lower than he could get as a FA.

Guess: Padres and Yates do agree on an extension ... probably a “safer” bet for the Padres than gambling on the list of RP options available for 2021 ... Yates gets security against injury / regression in a place he likes.

We most likely will not get a perfect solution to our outfield needs. My personal favorite is Dickerson. I'm sure he is the favorite of lot of other teams too. We cannot count on getting Dickerson or Mancini. They are both just options at this point. Yes, Mancini has bad defense and a terrible arm. For the bat that he has we can live with it. Harper had/has terrible defense as well. It didn't keep him from getting $330 million. Our outfield defense was actually very good this year. I saw an article where it was ranked #2 behind Washington. I am not saying it is really that good, but with Renfroe and Margot, we can afford to have a bad LF. I would like to think of him as a bridge that helps make us instantly competitive more than a permanent piece but nobody can tell. Overall, I would be happy to get him. A consistent bat like his could make our streaky lineup a lot more dangerous.

I am not very worried about how Yates will age. He should be good for another 4-5 years. He has never had a dominant fastball. It is his splitter that makes him great. Guys who rely on changeups and splitters tend to age well.(As long as they have good control)

Not a trade idea BUT

Sign Dickerson OF .300 BA 3 WAR lefty power bat

Sign this dude https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=akiyam000sho   SHOGO you GO!... to platoon in CF with Margot.. Shogo is a FA and can sign in JPN or MLB (no posting necessary).. upside/and health vs Jank/Franchy.. for about what Jank will get in arb 1....

OF- vs RHP... Dickerson LF/SHOGO CF/Naylor RF... (obviously Renfroe gets some playing time too as does Margot but just to spell these dudes)

OF vs LHP.... Dickerson/Margot/Renfroe.... keep em all fresh... Renfroe (circa 400/450 PA's///// Dickerson 500//// SHOGO 350///Margot 350/// Naylor 400/450/////)....  Not the best OF in the game but probably can squeeze 10 WAR (we had 4.4 in 19) out of them --especially if we maximize their platoons... HUGE improvement as we await Trammell/and others to challenge, push, force their way into the lineup.... SHOGO could be a nice + on a 2 +1 type $3mil or so deal per...

I would love to see that happen. A REAL centerfielder who can a actually hit. If his hitting skills translate he could be a steal. I am sure he is somewhere on AJs radar.

Who are the untouchable players in trade negotiations?
-- Chelsea

Untouchable: Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr., Chris Paddack, MacKenzie Gore, Hosmer

Also probably not going anywhere: Luis Patiño, Andres Muñoz, Taylor Trammell, Garrett Richards, Kirby Yates, CJ Abrams

Everyone else, it seems, might be on the table.

thought this was pretty cool by Casavell

Assuming the Padres want to contend for at least the wild card in 2020-21 .... they most likely need to get boost out of their current players improving, some prospects developing fast (e.g. Trammell, Gore, Patino), some trades, and some FA signings. Some combo of all that upgrades those areas of need currently filled by talent that is less than playoff quality ... not all need to be replaced but at least some do.

To that end looked and the impact players sitting as FA in 2020-21 winter ... other than Betts not a compelling list (maybe Stroman if you like him). Getting that mega impact player via trade is just hard to pull off without potentially weakening another part of a roster ... which needs more than one piece added.

That preambles sets me up to think (If the money is available) that the Padres should go for a big time FA this winter. In my mind only 2 mega stars (Cole and Rendon) and some very good slightly less and slightly on the down side options. Don't need Rendon for what will be his price. Not much FA-wise in the OF (Dickerson is "nice" but not really impact .. maybe sign him anyway). So is this the best time to go big and make a run at Cole (somewhere north of 7 years / $210MM?) If Strasburg opts out of his 4 years / $100MM, he too could be a legit target, should be less than Cole. Both impact and #1 starters ... the professed need.

Do that and scramble for offense via trade ... but adding a #1 may make it easier to deal a Lucchesi or Lauer ... maybe  only a bottom of the rotation arms but of enough quality to be worth something in a deal package. Padres what to accumulate more impact pieces ... neither project to be impact.

Linked to that thinking (and maybe the simple desire to move on) would be an increase motivation in dealing Myers (and eat a part of his contract). Any reduction in the liability to Myers contributes to the contract to a new FA .... basically containing the total payroll a bit. Extend that even more ... with a robust farm system a combination of adding some quality but not blue chip pieces with Myers should lower the amount they have to eat which would contribute even more to the new signing pool.

Would expect the Cole, Strasburg, Hamels, Bumgarner type negotiations to drag on into late Dec or Jan ... but the "setup" trades happen around the Winter Meeting in early Dec.

So maybe some logic here for the Padres to go BIG one more time ...

Listening to the XM pundits chat, I agree that if Strasburg opts out, that SD will be in on both Cole and Strasburg. Do to age, I would prefer Cole, but he is going to be the bigger contract. Hamels and MadBum scare me a bit, age and injury/wear and tear.

However, the key is moving Myers and what will he cost in dollars and prospects to move. As you noted, what would DET need in prospects to take at least 80% of his contract. Or as I and others have said, is there a "bad" rebound candidate pitching contract that SD could swap for Myers. Hoping that a move to SD and working with Balsley(if he is still around with the new manager) could get average to above average production from a Myers type pitching contract. That is what I keep looking for in a spot to move Myers.

Not really interested in taking a bad contract in return for Myers ... not at this point in the Padres evolution. IF they want to contend in 2020-21, don’t want to waste a roster spot on a maybe / if rebound player for experimentation.

Would push the additional prospects with Myers to maximize the salary savings which could be redeployed for the FA adds.

=====

I know this may be considered heresy but other than some RP (Hand, Yates, Stammen) ... how may SP have had major turnarounds under Balsley? Is his record of getting more out of the pitchers that much better than other pitching coaches out there?

Not that he is not a good pitching coach but maybe over estimating the results end of his work. Maybe very good on the margin ... but all pitching coaches need the base talent to be successful.
