Trade ideas for 2019

PreviousPage 5 of 36Next

My Summary of what Padres need to do is:  CONSOLIDATE the QUANTITY of their MLB & prospect SP (and Farm in general), and their (mostly) MLB OF into QUALITY at SP.

Can always use RP's, but I could see pretty soon:  Yates, Stammen, Wingenter, Wisler (was last night for real?  He looked GREAT), Castillo (L), Andres Munoz, Erlin/M. Diaz/Perdomo for length...

With SP's Gore etc obviously coming, it's easy to envision a great rotation soon too, but as I've said again & again:  On a win now PLAYOFF team, it would not be wise to expect Gore, Paddack, or ? to be the #1... especially if innings limited

2019 if we made & won a wild card, Paddack & Strahm would be completely out of innings/maxed out/health risk to play in a full playoff series.

2020  More arms, experience & innings to go around, but Richards & Lamet will be innings limited off TJ & Gore a rookie.

With Dominguez and McCutchen going down in PHI, and with them having true playoff aspirations, does SD get bold and look at trading Yates and Margot to PHI? What do they have that would be of interest to SD?

Or with them supposedly having "stupid money", can we work a Yates, Margot, Myers trade and not have to eat too much money?

PHIL really does not have much in the way of prospects to target and are not going to move anyone of quality that may help them win in now.

Padres are not going to trade Yates (under control for 2020) if they plan to contend in 2020 ... not alternative that can be relied on. Margot could be dealt but more likely optioned to AAA to build some value back and avoid selling low.

Myers is the one that is interesting as an option. PHIL still has the money going forward and can be under the luxury tax level if they added Myers. Myers in PHIL's ballpark could be very productive and can go out there in CF as needed. IF Preller is willing just to move Myer's contract ... PHIL with a need, money, and little in the way of compelling prospects could be the best bet to move Myers.

Somehow I don't think Preller wants to move Myers just to move the contract since, although frustrating for many, is still a very useful player who can fill multiple holes while being an "average" hitter (about a 100 wRC+).

If Renfroe isn't the prime trade chip. It's completely unjustifiable to move him for Bauer or Stroman since they aren't controlled long enough to predicate him being a supplementary piece.

Agree. Last winter getting 2 years of Stroman / Bauer and before the some of the young arms became ML factors for the Padres maybe BUT now getting only 2020 is not worth all that much to the Padres. Preller would take either but his offer probably would not include any top prospects. The MLBTradeRumors article (as I recall) suggested a deal for Bauers for some prospects such as Patino and Rosario and giving up someone like Patino who has that top of the rotation profile for 6 years for Bauers for 2020 does not seem like a Preller move.

Hard to pull off a deal for a SP since what makes the most sense is a legit top of the rotation arm that is under control for 3 years or more. That is someone Preller would pay volume of quality prospects to get.

Pirates apparently interested in trading Alex Dickerson.

Any interest?

I only ask because he's a LH outfielder who plays good defense and has good on base skills.

3 things we lack.

I doubt the penny pinching Pirates would take on Myers but prospects?

Personally I am a Dickerson fan.

"If" he stays healthy he's a good player to pencil in every day....or at least against RH's.

Right now our entire outfield is pretty much HR or bust.

Think it is Cory Dickerson.

30 ... on a $8.5MM deal ... FA after the season ... all that adds up to a no along with questioning why PITT (still as much a contender as SD) would want to move him now if the though he was still important.

I just came back to fix it,of course it's Corey and he's a free agent after this year.

Oops.

Story I saw was because they have Polanco back and the young kid,Bryan Reynolds is tearing it up....and they're cheap so they want re-sign him.

Add in Marte and they may as well trade Dickerson.

Saw the MLBTradeRumors piece on "interest" by other teams in Renfroe. Would that be a "trade at peak value" or will he continue to improve?

At this point he is at league minimum with 4 1/2 years control and clearly making a case as an elite power hitter with vastly improved defense just weak OBP. So, doubt the Padres (if they considered trading him) would take anything less than quality in return. Short control SP plus a long term prospect? Production / Cost / Control all a key selling points.

(Yes I know we should trade Myers but no one wants him so move on for now). Not sure the market for Reyes and likely zero market or Cordero and minimal market for Naylor if the expectation is a decent return piece.

I like Renfroe but he will never be a .350 OBP guy.

We gotta start somewhere improving our plate discipline and on base skills.

So either trade him for a SP or a LH CF like Adam Eaton.

I would prefer a better return even if we have to add prospects.

Losing Renfoe for a #4 starter who eats innings(Leake type) would suck.

We need high upside even if it costs adding Naylor or one of the Allens etc...

It would be an interesting debate on potential return for Renfroe who with his flaws has impact with that power, has the control, and is low cost. Maybe worth a bit more than we envision especially if the Padres take a shorter control more costly ML player (e.g. SP) from a rebuilding team. Possible teams such as Toronto (Stroman) or Cleveland (Bauer) could be players IF that is the way the Padres want to go. On the flip side, a contender such as PHIL might fork over a very good prospect. IF Preller is flexible on the return (as long as it is quality), might be a good time to trade Renfroe.

Agree a quality CF (ML type) would be a great target but just don't see those being on the market. I do like Eaton but he really has been more a corner OF recently plus not a low cost option and short control (2 club option years remain).
