Trade ideas for 2019

Could the Jay Bruce trade to Seattle be a templet for a future Will Myers deal?

Seattle ate $18MM of Bruce's $21MM remaining contract (1.5 years) and received a marginal prospect. Basically a deal to "save" $3MM. Phil gets Bruce for $3MM (AAV $2MM).

Myers is better (and more versatile) defensively and arguably at this point still a better hitter with at least some upside. Downside is the 3.5 years still on his deal. IF a team sees value in Myers as a $5MM AAV player ... would the Padres eat the difference ($15MM AAV) just to clear the $5MM for making payroll space for Eaton or Whitfield. Padres are in the position to add a quality prospect (e.g. Quantrill) to the deal and maybe get the other team take on a bit more.

Have to look at Myers' salary as dead money so saving any part if used to get another player as an upgrade to the team does make sense.

Myers historically is better than a 5 MM AAV player.  Problem is he's cold at the worst possible time; getting more playing time than he deserves frankly only because Margot is providing nothing offensively....

I would eat 10 MM AAV (30MM total) on Myers for just a PTBNL, but going up to 15 MM AAV (45 MM total)... ugggh.

Can we trade Myers to the Phils to play CF?

Could just change dugouts....that would be nice.

Time to zig from the standard rhetoric of trading for a veteran SP (i.e. Stroman or Bauer).

Apparently their is speculation that Brad Hand will be on the market ... controlled in 2020 for around $7-8MM. Would setting up a back end of the pen with Yates and Hand (given the alternatives in house for 2020) be more valuable than adding one year for either Stroman or Bauer at considerable higher salary point? Guessing on 2020 payroll after all the probable pluses and minus still should sit around $116MM .... that likely means fitting in only one of these guys.

Remember Stammen is a FA and Warren / Loup are on club options (likely to be declined). Then it is a bit open season behind Yates and Wingenter for those other 6 slots. Think SP has more (and better) potential for the 5 starting spots with the return of Richards and Lamet coupled with the maturation of Lucchesi, Lauer, Strahm, and Paddack .... plus L.Allen and Quantrill should be pushing for a ML slot.

Hopefully we will be able to see what we have in Diaz and Castillo the rest of this season....and maybe Megill and Munoz?

I just don't see the Padres spending money or players for Bullpen pieces.

Nice little piece on MLBTR about the Padres OF overload.

If I could have my way, I would look to a team in a hitter friendly park and look to take on some burdensome pitching contract from them to unload Myers contract, even if I had to eat $20-25M of the $66M remaining. And see if Balsley can work his magic on that acquired pitcher. Also, we need a CF that can actually get on base at a decent clip. Although, for whatever reason, Margot seems to bat best in the 7th or 8th spot, getting OBP at a .332 clip. Maybe if Green stops moving guys around and actually pays attention to some analytics, we can get our line up to work at its highest potential.

I agree with Mr.P. I dont think bringing back Mr. Hand or another reliever is the option for SD. Only the right SP option is a viable road for SD in my opinion.

Somewhat a speculative article on MLBTradeRumors taking input from Kevin Acee and Dennis Lin surrounding potential options for clearing the OF congestion with the Padres. Usual stuff but a few points were interesting (considering the sources):

1. in this piece (and in some other media commentary) the near term return of Cordero seems inevitable causing some ripple effect with other players. Frankly can't see why they would bring him back now ... yes LHH and can play all three OF slots (not all that well though) and he has POTENTIAL but is not doing well in EP and can't see him unseating Renfroe - Reyes - Myers to get much playing time (for his development). He has only had 27 PA in EP with a poor line of 240/296/560 and a 33%K rate and that is in the hitter friendly PCL/EP. Give him some time to get his act together (he does have minor league options) ... what is the rush?

2. a suggestion was trading Renfroe (sure that would not sell well with some of our fans given his hot start) since he has some longer control / lower salary should be the best trade chip BUT NOT a prime chip for a major return (interesting). Basically his skill set is that of Reyes.

3. doubted a market for Myers and his contract and doubted they would "sell low" on Margot although he could be optioned to the minors for regular ABs.

Again, hit the trade targets of Stroman and Bauer but included Boyd from Detroit ... 28 / 3+ years of control / low salary and having a very good season but should note not all that great in the previous seasons. Boyd may be one for the scouts since I have heard his name come up as a potential target for other teams (of course at what price).

Toronto, Cleveland, and Detroit all really need OF help for the long run so a potential real match exists but if it is Renfroe (maybe plus) for Stroman (2019-20), Bauer (2019-20), or Boyd (2019-2022) is it worth it?

With Dominguez and McCutchen going down in PHI, and with them having true playoff aspirations, does SD get bold and look at trading Yates and Margot to PHI? What do they have that would be of interest to SD?

Or with them supposedly having "stupid money", can we work a Yates, Margot, Myers trade and not have to eat too much money?

If Renfroe isn't the prime trade chip. It's completely unjustifiable to move him for Bauer or Stroman since they aren't controlled long enough to predicate him being a supplementary piece.
