Trade ideas for 2019
Quote from MrPadre19 on May 26, 2019, 7:34 pmWe won’t have trouble finding a DH.
Stroman is controlled for 3 more seasons....I think.
At a very reasonable cost.
He won’t come cheap or they just keep him.

Quote from Cptjack on May 27, 2019, 7:43 amHe shouldn't cost that much. James Paxton got a top 30-50 arm and a couple non prospects for 2 full years. Stroman's at 1.5 and a slightly worse and more expensive pitcher.
Though we absolutely shouldn't be trading for someone that's a FA in 21 anyways. Should be aiming for those 22-23 classes with Taillon, Castillo, Marquez, Syndergaard if we actually want to bridge the gap to our prospects and have a continuous run like the Astros.

According to baseball reference, he is a FA after the 2020 season. And I would expect his arb number to come in between $10M & $12M for next season. And after hearing his extension rant during spring training, I am not a big fan. PASS!!

Quote from MrPadre19 on May 27, 2019, 4:05 pmIf that’s the case I agree.
Unless we are in the WC Hunt at the deadline I agree we don’t need anyone not signed through 2021.
Center fielder may be different.
We could use 0ne for 2 years.

Quote from Brian Connelly on May 28, 2019, 9:59 amI agree. LAD dominance in 2019 makes getting a 1/2 year "rental" guy like Bumgarner unattractive, since the only push this year is for a wild card spot. I'm extremely optimistic Pads can improve rest of year with potentially: Tatis, Urias, Mejia, & Cordero all returning in June. But hard to see LAD falling from their lead even when we close the gap this year.
I would not rule out the 1.5 year control guys like Trevor Bauer, Stephen Strasburg, or Marcus Stroman; but would still prefer the 2.5 year control guys who can "save" the young arms this year & next AND give 2 shots at winning the division: Syndergarrd, Kluber (stock down on both), but right now am most intrigued by Max Scherzer: see Trade for Frontline SP thread.

Quote from BoosterSD on May 28, 2019, 7:50 pmStrasburg is controllable for either 1.5 years, OR, 3.5 years based on what he does with his opt out.
2019 - $38.34M, 2020 - $25M, and can opt out. 2021 - $15M, 2022 - $15M, 2023 - $45M. Boras is his agent, but Strasburg did sign an extension while with WAS, so not the norm for a Boras client. Stras will be 34 during the 2023 season. So I would imagine that if we traded for Stras, we could rework the contract, and in an extra year and get him to forgo the opt out. Which is why I suggested increasing the players going each way, so that WAS gets some salary relief, SD gets a LH CF that can hit in Eaton, and replaces Myers money with that of Stras.

Quote from MrPadre19 on June 2, 2019, 6:29 amDoes AJ check in on Whit Merrifield?
Royals apparently willing to “trade anyone”.
He is just what we need.
Top of the order bat who gets on base and can run.....could play 2b “or” CF.
Depending on the cost I would be ecstatic.

I am guessing he would require a couple of top prospects plus a couple of others. A 30 year old All-Star under a dirt cheap contract for the next 3 years (with a 4th under club option at $10MM). Would not expect KC to take anyone back who is carrying any type of costly contract or is "short" control.
Checked his history in the ML/minors and he has played very little OF which would make a deal for him a bit risky if the intent was for him to convert to CF. Remember that thought did not work well with Myers. If the got him for 2B does that put Urias in the deal to KC or does that make Urias the super sub at 2B/SS/3B?
If not CF ... maybe LF and include Reyes or Renfroe in the deal. That would still leave CF for a sort out of Myers, Margot, and Cordero in the short run.
I can think of a lot of prospect combos I would deal for him .... just skeptical that KC would move him for them and hold for that one elite prospect to head the deal ... and I would not trade either Tatis or Gore. In Merrifield's case KC has no sense of urgency to deal him so I really doubt they get the bounty they expect for a 2B ... even of his talent.

Quote from 3fingersplit on June 2, 2019, 6:52 pmDo Not Trade Hunter Renfroe......Period
I said it 6-10 months ago....he will hit you 25-30 HR a year, 70-90 RBI and hit .260 - .270 and his defense is better than Reyes and he runs the bases better

It appears that Renfroe has moved to the top OF for the Padres (hopefully not just a hot streak). Very disappointed (and did not expect a lot) in the seasons of Margot and Myers plus Reyes' bat seems to a tampered off from a strong finish to 2018. Not seeing much help (impact level) for Dickerson, Pirela, or Naylor and not projecting big futures from Cordero or Jankowski coming of the IL.
I have sort of refocused trade thoughts to bolstering the OF ... with some on-base talent for the top of the order and rely on Renfroe - Tatis - Machado - Hosmer to provide the punch to drive them in. Note that Preller yesterday will refocus on trades once the draft is over ... but is not looking for short term fixes and will not erode the long term plan by decimating the key internal prospects. So think of targets that have long control ... upside.
Beginning to warm to the idea of targeting Eaton and Merrifield as OF to go with Renfroe. Preller would have to get a bit creative with WASH and KC to limit the added salary level but could work since neither is obscenely costly.
Since WASH appears to still want to contend in 2020 building around Scherzer, Strasburg, and Corbin more ML (ML ready) talent would be needed ... think 1B/3B/RP as key needs if they don't resign Rendon (but no 2020 issue with salary cap). KC is more like to be content with a slate of maybe 3-4 prospects with at least 1 or 2 more blue chip.
Padres have the pieces for both deals if the teams are enticed by volume of very good prospects and don't demand the elite.
