Trade ideas for 2019
Quote from fenn68 on July 18, 2019, 4:07 pmAfter coming out of the break against a very good team (ATL) in SD and losing all then going to play a very bad team (MIA) on the road and losing 2 of 3 ugly .... and now with a lot of teams between the Padres and the 2nd wild card ... time to drop the buyer side and focus on sell or hold.
With only significant trade chip in Yates ... almost all contenders would want him but most don’t have the assets to make a fair deal (or will not deal that level of assets). No real reason to deal Yates for less than a top tier prospect just to add to the farm system status ... at least not now.
So if Atlanta will not relinquish one of Pache or Waters (good chance they will not) ... other acceptable returns for contenders? All come with some risk but so does Yates.
1. Kyle Tucker (Houston) .... 23 LHH RF ... MLB #10. Now that may seem as an over reach but Tucker has been an elite prospect for some time (and MLB.com does not like to lower rating unless really convinced) yet sort of stuck in AAA, did not perform that well in ML audition, and clearly passed by LHH OF Yordon Alvarez who is tearing it up in the ML. IF the Padres see him still as an elite prospect and the Astro don’t have a ready spot of him ... might be a fit (or as part of a bigger deal since HOU may wish to add a SP prospect for next season).
2. Jesus Sanchez (TB) ... 21 LHH RF ... MLB #33 just promoted to AAA. Hard to deal with TB for prospects but again in a deal that includes multiple players with Yates and one of Reyes or Renfroe to TB (they do need some offense) and a deep farm system might work.
Not much else in high end position players near term that fits into Padres needs. So, would they take different tack ... back to Altanta (has a gut of top pitching prospects) and target either Kyle Wright (23, MLB #25, AAA) or Ian Anderson (21, MLB #26, AA)? Both have “top of the rotation” potential and although the Padres have a lot of prospect arms ... only a few are “top of the rotation” projection (Paddack, Gore, Pacino, Morejon) and some will not make it. The others are more mid to lower rotation projection. The more “top of the rotation” options the better (think if the all panned out) and since pitching of any quality is always in demand, the Padres other arms become valuable trade chips.
TBD.

With his last 30 days with a line of 263/382/561 (944 OPS) and plus defense makes him a Top 10 CF in that period. Need to give him the same benefit of the doubt as given Reyes and Renfroe.
You would hope that Margot is maybe finally turning the corner and becoming what we hoped he would be. Mind you his is only turning 25 in September and SD could be accused of rushing him since we had nothing better to trot out on a regular basis.
Unfortunately I ultimately believe that he is just teasing us again and will revert back to what we have seen.

Quote from 84padres on July 19, 2019, 8:23 amWe need to dump Myers, Who would you add in a trade to get rid of his 60 mil plus due? Urias ? Patino ? Morejon ? No way on Gore . I'm not saying I would put Patino but I would trade Urias and another lesser chip for Myers and a flyer on a low A player to save the 60 mil which could cripple us for the next 3 years which should be the opening of our window to contend. Think what we could do with 20 mil a year, extend Tatis or Yates or add another player. I'm not sold on Urias and think Miller or Edwards are a much better bet.

Since I really doubt any team will take on $60MM just go get prospects (unless the Padres bundle Tatis AND Gore) what I would add to Myers is not going to get a deal done. Any other team either does not have the money or can find the same or better use of the money that you envision the Padres using.
IF saving money is the objective ... don't see any route to dump the full $60MM ... Padres would have to eat a chunk (a very very big chunk) and/or take on an equally bad contract that some other team can't wait to get out of (not a big upside to the Padres).
I think Myers is closer to being released than getting traded given his 2019 performance ... that is not a good outcome. IF the non-contending Padres want to salvage anything out of Myers at some point he will need to play again and hope he returns to being an "average" player ... as that they might get a buyer at 33 cents on the dollar ... save max a 1/3rd of what will be owed to him then.
As much as I would like to move Myers, in the short run the non-contending Padres maybe be better served just keeping him around (shrinking the size of the amount owed which is dead money) and hope he eventually generates some return to average production and they find a buyer even at a discounted rate and save something. Not as though the Padre OF is 5 deep with All-Stars and little is on the way near term.

Fenn is right when he says that it will need to be more than prospects to get Myers out of SD. It will need to be a combo of other large contracts and prospects to move Myers. I still think the answer is SF. They need to get younger, need OFers, and get some contracts off the books.
Myers, Urias, and Lauer or Luchessi for Samardijza and Crawford. Crawford plays 2B for SD. Myers is owed $68.5M. Samardijza is owed $19.8M for 2020 and Crawford is owed $15.2M for both 2020 and 2021. That is $50.2M between them and would make Myers contract more like $6.1M per year which is good for his current production. Plus gives them a young controllable 2B/SS and a good pitcher with 4 years of control as well. Might have to add one more mid level prospect to SF.

Just release Kinsler and eat his contract .... don’t waste a roster spot with useless veteran and use it for prospect development.
Maybe if they get really lucky someone claims Kinsler off waivers.

Quote from fenn68 on July 20, 2019, 7:22 amIn an opinion piece on MLB.com, they were speculation on the contending teams with the greatest urgency to add and what the need is. Couple observations:
None of the teams’ key need was a position player ... all SP or RP. That probably means that if they added a bat as a secondary need ... probably will not offer much to get him. On the other hand, that creates a lot of competition for the limited amount of quality pitching on the market .... increased the price to be paid.
Since Yates is the Padres only real quality trade chip in this environment (and arguably the best RP that could be available) the need may “force” a team to pay up making a Yates trade justifiable.
The article listed 3 teams in need for RP as a priority ... in order of need:
MINN (actually a couple of Top 100 LHH OF prospects that could entice the Padres)
WASH (not much to offer)
PHIL (not much to offer)
Either WASH or PHIL could go for a lesser RP option but if they did want Yates ... are they candidates to take Myers in a bundle with Yates (still likely the Padres would have to eat some of the contract but saving something is still of value). We know PHIL has stupid money to deploy.
Alternative, for a lesser return could WASH or PHIL be a home for Stammen or, maybe Perdomo, for a good prospect?

Quote from Henry Silvestre on July 20, 2019, 3:48 pmI know we are sliding and likely on the outside looking in.. But I still want AJP to buy and Sell.. If Bauer is indeed available right now lets get him, if he is traded he wont be availbale to us anytime soon.. Also having Bauer on board for 10-15 Starts will also build Chemisrtry and help Bauer settledown in SD in the offseason and ease into the situation.
Sell- obviously Yates and Stanmen are probably the 2 pieces that generate the most interest.. so set a high, and I mean Tucker high, Waters high price tag on Yates and if its met you trade him if is not you keep him.. Stanmen -just get a piece that may help in a yr or 2 or a higher potential dude in lower levels..
Lastly Givens (Baltinore RP) is someone I would definetely keep tabs on.. he looks fsntastic (road splits) and most of his struggles have come in that bandbox home stadium... I would like to trade 3 or 4 borderline prospects and clear some Rule V players or 40 man roster place holders out of the way.. Think France/Gettys types.. Orioles would love to add 3-4 MLB oe close to MLB ready guys like these to improve their horrific situation at the moment..

Quote from BoosterSD on July 20, 2019, 4:15 pmI agree with the idea of massaging the roster. Sending off some fringe pieces for better pieces that can help, now and down the road. However, Bauer makes me nervous for two reasons. One, performance. He has been up and down this year. Has stretches where he looks like Cy Young and stretches where he looks like slightly above average. Two, contract. Now mind you he might be saying this to get out of CLE, however, he has stated that he is never going to sign a multi year deal. He is also going to arbitration every year until he is a FA. Which is only next year by the way. So we would send high end prospects to CLE for 1 year of Bauer at almost $20M in salaery. Seems steep. Think I would rather chase Syndergarrd or, if we have the payroll space, spend on Gerrit Cole who is a FA.
Givens could be an interesting idea.
