Trade ideas for 2019

PreviousPage 13 of 36Next

So I am sure that I will get slayed for these thoughts. But, lets post them anyway.

NYM get Myers, Urias, and Luchessi or Lauer, and a MiL not named Gore or Patino. SD gets Cespedes and Nimmo. NYM clear out Cespedes for Myers who can actually play for the next 3 years. Urias becomes their SS, and Rosario moves out to CF (an idea from MLBXM), and Lauer/Luchessi replaces Wheeler who will be traded by the end of Aug, and Myers costs them about $13M per year. SD gets out of Myers contract and Nimmo becomes a LHH OF option, capable of occasional duty in CF.

PHI gets Hedges and Margot. SD gets De Los Santos back. PHI needs a back up C option that they can trust defensively ( JTR has played 85 of 90 games so far this season - burnout?) and a strong defensive CFer. De Los Santos can be some much needed bull pen help.

ATL gets Yates. SD gets Waters and a AAA high end RP. ATL gets the closer they need for the playoff push and next season, and SD gets switch hitting CFer with a MiL career BA or .306 and OBP of .360, who could be ready by mid 2020 or 2021 start of season.

Boyds' Minor League numbers more represent what he's doing now than what he did in 17-18.

Guys like this break out every year.

Is he for real?

I guess that is the question and the answer to determine his value.

Wish he wasn't "another" Lefty though.

Yeh, it is less about Boyd being good and more about the price to get him.

Think it was Morosi suggested Renfroe or Reyes and a prospect(s). Not sure that makes sense for a team needing offense an with a lot of pitching options.

Would agree on the Yates to Atlanta for Waters (for the 2nd piece would prefer a lower minor leaguer with a higher ceiling ... Preller's strong set). Problem is getting Atlanta on board.

Not that keen on De La Santos ... PHIL needs pitching and De La Santos can't hold a ML slot. Add that Kingery is doing a great job in CF so they don't really need CF support. If they wanted Hedges .... they have some prospects that could be useful. Alternatively, there are some other teams that may need some catching support ... again for a deep dive prospect.

The Mets deal, paying way too much to get rid of Myers' contract (or at least $30MM or so of it since Cespedes is would $30MM next season). Good chance, if he plays in 2020, Cespedes will be a dud and Nimmo (who I like) is out with a bulging disc. Nimmo can get on base and a LHH (both good) but really a corner OF "forcing" the Padres to part with either Renfroe or Reyes. Lucchesi or Lauer, Urias, and a MiL to just get rid of $30MM of Myers does not work for me. Side: not sure but good chance the Mets have insurance on Cespedes for part of his salary ... does not likely exist if traded ... so Mets might actually have to pick up the $60MM of Myers (Mets too cheap for that).

Assuming any team actually wants Myers, at this point would be more inclined to just eat half the dead money and include some second tier prospects like L.Allen or Quantrill or less. Lose a marginal prospect and save $30MM to allocate more productively works.

Wasnt sure about the insurance on Cespedes, so that makes sense and really kills that deal. Although I was thinking that Nimmo would a compliment to Renfroe and Reyes with a tough righty on the hill and a late inning defensive replacement for Reyes. Or our RF if/when the DH is put in place in the NL.

I think that PHI would prefer to move Kingery back to 3B, and relegate Franco to back up. So Margot could be useful for PHI still. Not sold on De Los Santos, just know a few on here loved him when he was sent away. I would trust Preller to grab the right prospect.

There is probably some combo that works for a PHIL-SD deal. PHIL does have two "interesting" CF prospects to consider (neither Top 100 players):

Haseley (LHH)... 23 ... AAA ... a "50" rating ... was PHIL's #1 (8th overall) in 2017 and struggled in his brief call-up this year.

Moniak (LHH) ... 21 ... AA ... a "50" rating ... was the first pick overall in 2016 but has not lived up to his billing.

Neither appear to be in the same potential class as Pache / Waters ... so should cost less but either one could be serviceable as a LHH CF option (Jankowski is not lock going forward). Would PHIL deal one ... probably since Harper is locked in RF and McCutcheon will be back next year for 2 more seasons (plus another option year) the need for OF is not a priority.

I would prefer Haseley ... in AAA and should be ready to contribute in 2020. Think the key to get PHIL to part with him is dealing a pitcher ... one that could help in in 2019 ... either a SP or RP. A Hedges or Margot / Jankowski could be the adder depending on the prime piece.

An addendum on the PHILs ... listening to their TV broadcasters and although the PHILs do want to add (primarily at SP) they do not intend to deal any of their quality prospects. Rather the plan may be to take on salary and / or rentals. Both strategies require yielding less prospect-wise.

Do credit the broadcaster (Kruk) for being spot on with the extensive competition to get quality SP making it difficult  for PHIL to get who they may want with that strategy.

We are a bit at the point in the trade process where we can't believe much of what is said by the GM ... and the reporters / analysts are mainly creating speculation to fill their reporting.

Clear no GM is saying they will trade any of the top players or trade any of their top prospects ... but they always take that approach and when it gets down to the wire ... things change. We will see.

I may be surprised but other than some "house cleaning" deals by the Padres if they are out of it, beginning to accept that no major deal will emerge.

A potential GM dilemma:

  1. Trade Yates and Myers (and his $62MM contract) for some non relevant prospect
  2. Trade Yates (keep Myers and his $62MM contract) for Waters or Pache (or another Top 50 prospect)

On one hand, clearing Myers' contact (of even a major portion) at the expense of any return for Yates opens payroll to add via FA or trade to an area of need and take on salary (that is IF there are worth options to be found / added).

On the other hand adding a needed CF option near term (but unproven in the ML) is a need but still carrying Myers' salary crimps the ability to make other needed adds as they arrive. (note: can't assume they can dump Myers contact another way .. have not been able to do so yet ... tying it with Yates maybe the the best option).

Not an easy call given the assumptions that have to be made on the future options.

====

I would opt for Yates and Myers (and his contract) for bupkis.

Maybe why GM don't over react to a 2 month breakout from a 28 year old:

"Boyd's ERA has crept up to 3.95 on the season, as he has posted a 5.88 mark in his past seven starts."

======

Preller is now quoted as not committed to adding SP ... guess a combo of the "asks" for those top of the rotation arms and the development of Paddack, Lucchesi, and Lauer with the return of Lamet and the coming of Richards in 2020 with an eye on the fast track of Gore (and soon Patino) eliminates the sense of urgency.

So while still on my continuing mission to find a spot for Myers and his contract. Knowing that you either need to take bad money for bad money, or include a highly valuable prospect or ML player to move bad money. Perhaps there is something to work out with SF.

Myers, Margot, and MiL SP not named Gore to SF for Samardizja and Crawford. Then SD moves Crawford to 2B. Making SD INF consist of 3 guys that can all play SS, and Hosmer. With 2 RHBs and 2 LHBs creating some balance for the line up as well.

Plus, Crawford is apparently the brother in law with Gerrit Cole. Maybe that helps SD land Cole in the offseason!! I mean it worked well for the CWS with Alonso and Jay to help lure Machado!
