Mize is a 2 month rental as well?

Jesus....

I knew Ray wouldn't cost us Mayfield.... explain to me though how Mize does?

I'm sorry guys, the sooner Preller goes, the sooner we can build a sustainable model where our team has competitive players signed, for multiple years, at reasonable prices.

We spent 2 out of our top 3 assets for, what, 20 starts? Waaaay to steep a price. Would have been happy with just Ray. He'll help us get to the post season but if you guys believe this puts us in the driver seat, I'd love to share your kool aid.

Okay, Debbie Downer out!

Go Pads!

One, we have been competitive for years now, just maybe not the way that you want.

Two, there is no guarantee that either Mendez or Mayfield will be as good as Mize and Ray during their careers, let alone even make the MLs.

Three, just making the playoffs is getting to the point that is no longer a goal in SD, now we need to go deep in the playoffs.

Four, we still dont know what the new owners strategy will be for SD baseball. I have read that he likes to walk the line of paying for stars and keeping the right Minors for his soccer team. So, maybe Mize and Ray like SD, and stay for the next couple of years.

Either way, roll the dice, get to the playoffs and see what happens.

To quote Casey Stern, prospects are cool, parades are cooler!!

Outside of the '24 team that absolutely cratered, none of the teams Preller has built were championship worthy( if they were, well, we'd have a championship, right?)

This team is as about as far away as any of them. Yeah, making the playoffs IS fun but as you say, it's not good enough anymore. If it's not obvious to anyone and everyone that Preller CANNOT build a champion, well then, we can still beat this dead horse every year, fooling ourselves that " hey, maybe we have a chance".

Sorry guys, I just don't see it. Time for a different approach.

Don't underestimate a key in these trades ... Preller used none of the current elite bullpen.

Now the have three SP who go 5-6 inning with excellent 3.00ish ERA and a shorter finish with more rested arms ... that should translate into more wins. Then in Aug, Buehler and maybe Marquez hold the #4-5 slots but now have a stronger / fresher set of arms to cover there shorter starts. Could get better if Pivetta returns bumping one in late Aug making even a stronger stretch run. (note not expecting much from Musgrove after two years off ... but that would be a real boost IF).

That pitching would be very competitive in the playoffs ... good pitching beats good hitting ... so, a better chance to advance than before the deals.

However, have to worry about something ... how will the current hot hitting hold up vs better pitching?

outside of the LAD ... who is building consistent championship teams? Which teams are not flawed?

Nootbar to Dbacks. The Cards are having a fire sale.

I am not happy losing Mayfield. But, Mize is a good pickup.

New owners are an unknown ... new CBA is an unknown ... games in 2027 are an unknown ... a farm system that is strongest in A+ and lower (so years away even if the prospects develop) ... a critical mass of FA to be will leave after the season ... unknown of some critical opt outs ...

For me makes sense to buy the better "rentals" to minimize the trade chips needed ... make your run when you can ... let the landscape of the future become clearer ... create the new game plan.

Think 2027-28 will be a struggle for the Padres whether the make the trades or did not.

The Pirates and Padres have each announced that right-hander Hunter Stratton has been traded to San Diego for minor league right-hander Andrew Moore.  Both players have been assigned to Triple-A by their new teams, and the Padres moved Jason Adam from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL to create a 40-man roster spot for Stratton.

===================

Neither are real prospects.

It's been something of a lost year for Mendez. He's dealt with some injuries and has been just ok when he has pitched. I also think he is increasingly looking like a reliever. Hernandez has huge upside, but he hasn't even come stateside yet. He's the definition of a lottery ticket.

Some of the shine seems to be rubbing off of Mayfield amongst prospect evaluators. His velocity is only sitting in the low 90s and most seem to think his changeup is his only plus pitch. He might project as more of a back of the rotation type now. Wolf is just organizational depth.

I think you can make the argument that Mize is our new #1 starter ahead of King. He's been great this year. Ray slots in as our #3. Workman is sort of interesting. He's a gold glove caliber defender, with a big arm, raw power and decent speed. His issue is making contact. The Cubs and White Sox both thought enough of him to take a flier in the rule 5 draft. It looks like he's had a solid year in the minors. He's probably not going to hit enough to make an impact. There's something to dream on though.

All in all I'm good with the moves. With Manny and Merrill finally heating up the offense has looked much better lately. The bullpen has been great most of the year. Starting pitching was the major weakness. Mize and Ray will go a long ways towards fixing that. A lot could still depend on when and how effectively guys are able to return from injury. With some luck this could be a pretty dangerous team.

There was never any doubt in my mind that AJ was going to buy as long as we were even remotely in the race. The reality hasn't changed. With the amount of money we have tied up long term in veteran players he's going to keep going for it at every opportunity. Holding onto prospects who are still years away doesn't do much if the veterans have regressed even further by the time they arrive. Mendez might have had a chance to help in the shorter term, Mayfield and Hernandez still have a long ways to go. I think AJ did enough to give us a shot without over committing. I'll always take that over prospect hugging.

I think we can take a sigh of relief that both Morejon and Miller are still with us.

Well, a quick Google search shows 22 teams have gone to the WS since we last did.

Many were flashes in the pan but at least they got there. We should expect more from our management, especially seeing as they've had LOTS of money to play with.

To paraphrase, " Playoffs are nice, but a Parade would be better"
