It's been something of a lost year for Mendez. He's dealt with some injuries and has been just ok when he has pitched. I also think he is increasingly looking like a reliever. Hernandez has huge upside, but he hasn't even come stateside yet. He's the definition of a lottery ticket.

Some of the shine seems to be rubbing off of Mayfield amongst prospect evaluators. His velocity is only sitting in the low 90s and most seem to think his changeup is his only plus pitch. He might project as more of a back of the rotation type now. Wolf is just organizational depth.

I think you can make the argument that Mize is our new #1 starter ahead of King. He's been great this year. Ray slots in as our #3. Workman is sort of interesting. He's a gold glove caliber defender, with a big arm, raw power and decent speed. His issue is making contact. The Cubs and White Sox both thought enough of him to take a flier in the rule 5 draft. It looks like he's had a solid year in the minors. He's probably not going to hit enough to make an impact. There's something to dream on though.

All in all I'm good with the moves. With Manny and Merrill finally heating up the offense has looked much better lately. The bullpen has been great most of the year. Starting pitching was the major weakness. Mize and Ray will go a long ways towards fixing that. A lot could still depend on when and how effectively guys are able to return from injury. With some luck this could be a pretty dangerous team.

There was never any doubt in my mind that AJ was going to buy as long as we were even remotely in the race. The reality hasn't changed. With the amount of money we have tied up long term in veteran players he's going to keep going for it at every opportunity. Holding onto prospects who are still years away doesn't do much if the veterans have regressed even further by the time they arrive. Mendez might have had a chance to help in the shorter term, Mayfield and Hernandez still have a long ways to go. I think AJ did enough to give us a shot without over committing. I'll always take that over prospect hugging.

Your analysis is on point.  Additionally, we've had to shut down or minimize Mayfield's innings both this year and last year.  Mendez doesn't really have a good 3rd pitch but his slider and FB are very good - looks to be a relief pitcher moving ahead.  Mayfield doesn't generate much spin on his stuff and relies more on location and a super change-up to get outs.  He may struggle at the upper levels.  Joniel Hernandez has had a great 1st year in the DSL but there are a lot of players in the DSL putting up similar numbers.  Probably won't stay at SS but bat will likely play in 3-4 years.  Wolf just a body, at this point.

I know they are just rentals but who knows what 2027 will bring  This might help us hang onto Morejon and new ownership will dictate how the roster fills out in 2027.  I'm not as pessimistic as some but I know there are a lot of happy players in the Padres dugout tonight.

Yeeeeesss😂😂😂

I really am not sure how I feel about the deadline. Personally, I don't think the Padres stand a chance in the playoffs. For the first time, I am questioning their thinking at the deadline. Sure they won 8 of 9 but from arguably the two worst teams in the NL and the team that was in the midst of their worst stretch of the season losing 10 straight. It was a perfect storm of worst case scenario for the Padres. The offense outside of the last month of the season has stunk. Hot doo doo garbage. They proved they can go silent when it matters most (2024 playoffs). They lost 2 of three to the Royals and 3 of 4 to the Braves just before playing the worst of the NL.

IMO, this is 2023 all over again when they missed the boat on capitalizing on Snell, Hader, Soto and others. Now, I love Mason Miller and he is an absolute game changer but the next two year’s rosters is not in good shape and the looming strike is going to cook Mason Miller’s value even more. Morejon had a ton of value. Ty France could have brought back a nice return given what we paid for him. Michael King isnt a lock to return next season and who knows if we already had him at his peak value - could have gotten good value for him.

On the flip side, how valuable does Preller really view the pieces he let go? Does Preller think his job is in jeopardy with new ownership and is he giving one last hurrah without dealing the two jewels in salas and schoolcraft? Number 3 number 4 and number 9 prospect on a top 3 farm system is a lot different than the number 3, 4 and 9 prospects on the 30th ranked farm system.

So if you are of the mindset just get in and anything can happen, I get it especially if you didnt give up “much” for two rentals. But if you want to capitalize on your assets when chances are slim, I think they made a boo boo.

Home playoff games is what it's all about.

Yes of course winning our first World Series is the goal ...but every season with home playoff games is ultimately a success IMO.

According to MLBTR two SPs have been scratched from their starts tonight to avoid the possibility of injury prior to the trade deadline, both Mize of DET and Peralta of NYM. Of course, SD had scouts at Peralta's last start, so.......

Gimme Mize over Peralta

Got my wish

I am guessing there was little debate by the Padres on being buyers ... just in their DNA to pursue winning when there is at least a chance of the playoffs ... then set-up the potential for going deep.

If they did nothing (or sold) not sure what that does to the current roster's attitude and how quickly (once they start losing) they lose the fans. I do believe that without the trades the Padres had virtually no chance for the playoffs. At least "trying" might get some good will spilling into 2027-28 when (in my view) will be losing seasons.

With the worst farm system in MLB ... and virtually all the better prospects in A+ and below (3-5 years out IF they develop) coupled with all the pending departures and holes in the ML roster ... no chance for years.

Spend more on FA? What FA are out there that are impact and how many could they even sign? Should note that IF King - Pivetta - Peralta - Matsui opt in but the other FA depart ... payroll will still go up due to the Machado / Tatis  / King contract have large increases plus the ARB for Miller should be substantial. No one expensive would be leaving.

Don't think that trading the better ML players (Miller) would yield enough to offset the void coming in the next few years.

So in the face of rough couple of coming seasons ... one last run probably was the only choice. Frankly, with new owners facing years of losing may cost everyone their jobs ... worse if those prospects 3-5 years out don't pan out in volume.

Even though it is past the trade deadline, anyone that has not been on a 40 man roster can be acquired and still qualify for post season play. The NYM have just released OFer Micheal Tauchmann, he is a LHH and could be signed and assigned to EP, and depending on how his knee is going, a potential LLH OF platoon bat. Would not cost SD anything in prospects and very little in salary. And if in SD by the end of August, could be added to playoffs if he performs.

Also could give a little time for Sheets to heal.
