Trade Deadline
Quote from fenn68 on August 3, 2026, 3:10 pmHaving an elite season sets up a King - Ray - Mize top 3 which should be very competitive in the playoffs ... up to the playoffs those three backed by Buehler and ? now then maybe just one of Pivetta or Musgrove.

Quote from fenn68 on August 3, 2026, 3:13 pmMayfield and Wolf to Detroit but OK with it. Padres also get a nothing INF.
So basically Mayfield for Mize. Win today not in 3-4 years.

This is true. What we can’t discount is if AJP got the go ahead from new ownership with the expectation of FA dollars going to pitching. If that isn’t the case then it’s a huge gamble.

Quote from fenn68 on August 3, 2026, 3:21 pmMize last pitched on July 25th ... held out by DET pending a trade. So should be ready to go as soon as he arrives and settles in with the Padres.
Takes a few days ... so maybe the last game vs AZ?

Neither Mayfield nor Mendez were going to be in the rotation in the 2027 season anyway, if there is a season with the lockout looming.
Worry about the rotation next offseason. We can get rebounding pitchers to come to SD to improve their financial value overall.
At least we still have Salas, Schoolcraft and Borthwick. I'm hoping that AJP & Staff keep these 3. Go Pads!

Or a last hurrah in their best chance for years (given the FA to be and the aging Bogaerts / Machado / Cronenworth) at the expense of two good (but not Top 100 types) that may or may not impact the ML in 3-4 years.
I normally like to keep prospects (at least good ones) but in this case ... OK with it.

Mize is a 2 month rental as well?
Jesus....
I knew Ray wouldn't cost us Mayfield.... explain to me though how Mize does?
I'm sorry guys, the sooner Preller goes, the sooner we can build a sustainable model where our team has competitive players signed, for multiple years, at reasonable prices.
We spent 2 out of our top 3 assets for, what, 20 starts? Waaaay to steep a price. Would have been happy with just Ray. He'll help us get to the post season but if you guys believe this puts us in the driver seat, I'd love to share your kool aid.
Okay, Debbie Downer out!
Go Pads!

Therein lies the rub. This team has zero chance of winning this year. And with every trade deadline bloodletting, Preller just guarantees our elusive championship hopes get pushed further and further away.
