Trade Deadline
Quote from Jeremy Hill on August 5, 2026, 12:44 pmThere are a couple guys that have come available after the deadline that might be able to upgrade the bench. Tauchmann has generally been good for solid if unspectacular production. Rob Refsnyder has been bad this year, but had been one of the best lefty mashers around the last few years. Austin Hays has generally been really good against lefties too. Stuart Fairchild has generally been solid defensively, on the base paths and decent against lefties. Any of them could be worth a flier to see if a change of scenery helps them out a la Rengifo. I don't mind Bowen as a speed and defense guy. The offense is rough. It might be worth bringing someone in to take the ABs he's been getting against lefties and put him in a pure pinch runner and defensive replacement role.

I dont disagree with the others you mentioned, especially Refsnyder as a bounce back bench piece. The reasoning behind highlighting Tachmann was simply because he is a LHH, and according to rumors, Preller was looking for a LHH bat.

Quote from fenn68 on August 5, 2026, 6:36 pmListen to one of those national minor league analysts ... on the players the Padres traded.
Not that high. Saw Mayfield as a potential #4 with a plus change but a ways to go on the other offerings. On Mendez ... liked stuff but saw issues with a third pitch, command, and health. On Hernandez ... saw upside but being only in the DSL (5 years out) worth moving to get help now ...basically too many uncertainties over 5 years.
Essentially worth dealing for a chance to win in 2026 getting two upper level ML SP.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 6, 2026, 7:29 amHernandez reminds me of well-thought of prospect shortstop Victor Acosta, who had similar numbers in the DSL way back in 2021. Acosta was traded to the Reds at the 2022 trade deadline for Brandon Drury, who did help us get into the playoffs and was one of the few players that did well against the Phillies in the National League pennant playoffs.
Acosta has not done much since his debut in the DSL five years ago and is not listed among the Reds top 30 prospects so have to take those minor league stats with a large grain of salt. Power stroke of Hernandez gives him an edge over Acosta but the DSL is a long way from the majors. Had to give up quality even for a rental if we are going to have the opportunity to make the playoffs in 2026.

Quote from fenn68 on August 10, 2026, 7:35 amJust take this as interesting ... Fangraphs ranked all the minor league prospects moved at the trade deadline ... in the Padres trades:
For Mize: #12 Mayfield and #92 Wolf
For Ray: #15 Mendez and #23 Hernandez
Would think Preller and the "buyers" have different views but this is a neutral view. Fangraphs did not have compelling evaluations on any of the Padre prospects moved.
Workman who the Padres received was a lowly #67.
