Trade Deadline

PreviousPage 5 of 28Next

Did hear a discussion (just speculation) about how the Padres will handle the Soto situation at the trade deadline.

1. The expectation with all the players returning under long term contacts … players although under performing so far will still (by Preller / Siedler) play to past results … and therefore will NOT want to deal Soto at the trade deadline. Basically still believing they can be a contender in 2024 with this core team.

2. However, they will do their due diligence (as they will do with all players) and entertain offers and only IF the offer is compelling would they deal Soto … but that is possible but unlikely.

I guess if they step back and believe the logic that built this team that most believed would be a powerhouse prior to the season … 1/2 of 2023 is an aberration from their real potential … they try to keep the core together and maybe try to add.

Really they only have two major departures (and most seem to think the Padres will let them walk) in Snell and Hader. Could argue that the emerging Cosgrove / Wilson, and the return of Suarez will cover that closer / end of game role. Replacing Snell would be the only issue (assuming they take the club option on Wacha).

Maybe not view of the 26 man roster … but maybe their view.

I guess if at the trade deadline they hold on Soto … they may re-evaluate in the winter if they continue to under perform (and how badly) through the end of this season.

I could see Balt(replacing Irvin),Milwaukee(replacing Rea),Cincinatti(replacing Weaver),Minnesota (replacing Maeda) all as options for Snell.

As good as he is late in the season (and right now this year!) he should be the #1 target of any contender looking for a Starter.

Yes even with a good return trading Soto at the deadline would be considered throwing in the towel on 2023.

Not likely they will do this....they may not "buy"....and they may trade Snell and/or Hader....but Soto would send a horribly bad signal.

Personally for the right return I wouldn't be too upset if we traded him...esp. if it would have anything to do with a serious run for Ohtani in the off season.

I could see HOU entering the mix for Snell and maybe even Hader as well. They are willing to trade an OFer currently the team in order to get what they need in other areas. They have two CFers that would be an upgrade over Grishams bat, so that would be nice.

Well with the way the team folded against WSH and PIT I'm ready to consider the possibility of the team acting as sellers. Snell and Hader would seem like good bets to go. If Lugo goes on a good run up to the deadline he could be in demand. Maybe someone will throw us a lottery ticket for Garcia. As fed up as we are with Grisham, a CF glove that good with some pop is always going to have some value.

I don't think Soto is going anywhere. Wacha could be an interesting call. The way he's been pitching bringing him back at 16m a year for the next 2 years would be a bargain. It could be interesting to see how the Padres value him and if his contract structure helps or hurts his value.

I agree that Baltimore makes sense as a trade partner. They could use multiple starters. As Fenn said they already have a trio of good outfielders in place. They have 3 more top 100 OF prospects performing at AAA in Cowser, Kjerstad and Norby plus another strong prospect who has gotten some ML time in Stowers. It would make sense to use them to acquire some pitching.

Preller’s strategy may be based on how bad (or good) the team and individual players perform in July then make his call on who is “available for the right price”.

Let’s assume they declare they are out of contention.

1. No reason not to deal Snell, Hader, Lugo (who I think will opt out), Garcia … all FA to be … at least get something … allow the next up players to get more ML experience before having to make roster decision next winter.

2. Martinez and Wacha will be both interesting given both have similar deals … club option at $32MM/2 years and a player option at about $8MM. Wacha is pitching at an elite level but do the Padres see that as a sustainable performance for two years? Safe bet if the Padres don’t exercise the club option Wacha will decline the player option. He should get a lot of interest on the trade market. Of course, if the Padres exercise the club option they could still deal him in the winter … next year. Since they likely are short of SP going into 2024 … doubt we see a trade. Martinez is harder to read since the Padres really like him … don‘t expect them to pay him $16MM / year given a bit uneven working out of the pen … BUT Martinez may accept the $8MM as a RP … have to evaluate if that is a fair amount to pay.

Not the most exciting return for Chapman … two prospects with some potential but not current (or recent) Top 30 types for Texas.

Regans was a #1 pick back in 2016 … pitched well (but not great) as a SP coming up the system … now 25 having a couple runs with TEX without much success.

The other guy is in the DSL (doing well) so he may be the real lottery pick with upside in the deal but 17 and long way to go.

Most think an “early trade” comes at a premium … and depending on one’s evaluation of Chapman right now … is not setting a great benchmark for a Hader deal. However, as the deadline approaches … buyers get more serious and compete which might bid up the return.

Listen to a Preller interview and saw the Acee write-up on the Siedler interview … both seem steadfast in their commitment to this team (would not expect less at this point).

Left with the feeling that a Soto deal is NOT in play even if out in 2023 … believing for 2024. Sort of me reading between the lines. (We love optimism).

No real clue on Snell or Hader … no indication that they will be candidates for extension but as for a deadline trade … I guess the Padres would have to be clearly out … so time will tell.

Here's an idea I've been thinking about. What if they trade for a reliever now? They could use them until the deadline. If they get going and make up some ground they can hold onto them. If not they could flip them to someone else. It could be a fairly low risk way to help the team try to turn it around in the run up to the deadline.
